Thinking About Adopting a Cat? 7 Common Myths, Answered

A cat’s shelter history or age does not predict the whole story. Learn what to ask, how to weigh household fit, and how to prepare for a new cat.

Adopting a cat is less about finding a supposedly “easy” age or a perfect history and more about matching one individual cat’s needs to your home. Kittens, adult cats, and shelter cats can all differ in temperament, health, and experience. Ask about the cat in front of you, verify what care has been provided, and plan for a veterinary checkup and a gradual transition.

Myth 1: Shelters rarely have kittens

Kittens may be available through shelters and rescues, but there is no reliable national figure here that can predict what a particular organization has today—or when it will. Availability varies by location and time. Contact local shelters or rescues to ask what cats are currently available and how to learn about new arrivals. If you are open to an adult cat, include them in your search rather than assuming a kitten is the only suitable choice.

Myth 2: A shelter cat is likely to have behavior problems

A shelter or rescue history by itself does not tell you how a cat will behave in your home. Ask staff or the foster caregiver about the individual cat’s personality, routine, likes and dislikes, and any observed behaviors. Texas A&M veterinary guidance especially recommends considering those details when children or other pets live in the home.

Be specific about your household: explain who lives there, whether children visit, what other animals are present, and how much time you can spend playing with and caring for a cat. A thoughtful match is more useful than a broad label such as “good with pets,” which may not describe every animal or situation.

Myth 3: Shelter kittens are not socialized

There is not enough comparative evidence here to say that shelter kittens as a group are or are not well socialized. A kitten’s experiences and handling matter, and individual histories differ. Ask what the kitten has encountered so far, how it responds to people and everyday activity, and what the shelter or foster caregiver has observed. Treat those observations as a starting point, not a guarantee of how the kitten will behave in a new home.

Myth 4: Shelter cats and kittens are sick

Shelter origin alone does not establish whether a cat is healthy or ill. Before adoption, ask what veterinary care has been completed and request the cat’s medical records. Confirm directly with the organization whether vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, or other services have been provided; packages differ, so do not assume every shelter offers the same care.

The CDC recommends taking a newly adopted cat to a veterinarian within a few days to a week. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises that a cat showing health problems should be seen as soon as possible. Bring the records you received and tell the veterinarian about any symptoms or concerns.

Myth 5: An adult cat is always easier—or a kitten is always a better fit

Age can help you anticipate care needs, but it cannot determine the right match on its own. Cornell notes that healthy adult cats usually need less intensive care and supervision than kittens or juvenile cats. Kittens are often curious and playful and may need extra supervision, litter-box training, or help transitioning to a new food, depending on their age and history. Adult cats can still be curious and playful; their established behavior may simply give you more information to assess.

Compare actual cats using the demands of your household rather than assuming one age is universally easier.

  • Time and supervision: How much attention can you provide, including during busy parts of the day?
  • Activity and play: What does the cat’s observed energy level seem to require?
  • Household fit: How might the cat respond to your children, visitors, and resident animals?
  • Health and follow-up: What care is documented, and what veterinary follow-up may be needed?
  • Temperament and routine: What do the shelter or caregiver know about the cat’s habits and preferences?
  • Transition and environment: Can you prepare a suitable indoor space and give the cat time to settle?

These are practical questions for comparing individual cats, not a validated scoring system.

Myth 6: A new cat should settle in immediately

Moving into a new home is a transition for the cat and the people who live there. Texas A&M veterinary technician Paula Plummer, a Cat Friendly Veterinary Professional at the university’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, says: “Typically, it can take up to a month for a new pet to adjust to the family and routine, as well as for the previous family members to adjust to the new cat.” That is guidance, not a timetable every cat will follow.

Ask the shelter or rescue about the cat’s current routine and preferences, then give the cat time to become familiar with the home and household. A slow adjustment does not, by itself, establish that the match is wrong.

Myth 7: An indoor cat needs little more than food and a litter box

Indoor life does not remove a cat’s behavioral needs. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 position statement on indoor and outdoor lifestyles says indoor cats need environments that meet their normal behavioral needs, which are relevant to physical, emotional, and cognitive health. Prepare an indoor setting that supports the cat’s needs, and ask the shelter or your veterinarian what may suit that particular animal.

Litter-box care is also part of routine health and hygiene. The CDC advises changing the litter box daily and washing your hands after handling cat feces. Follow the organization’s guidance on the cat’s existing litter routine where possible, and make sure you can keep up with daily cleaning.

Questions to ask before you adopt

  • What do you know about this cat’s personality, routine, likes, dislikes, and behavior?
  • How has the cat responded to children, other animals, and ordinary household activity, if known?
  • What medical care has been completed, and can I have the records?
  • Are there known health concerns or recommended follow-up appointments?
  • What food and litter routine is the cat used to?
  • Which services are included with this adoption, and which will I need to arrange separately?

Clear answers can help you prepare, but a shelter’s observations cannot guarantee exactly how a cat will respond after moving. Use them alongside your own household’s needs and a veterinarian’s advice.
