Mix 1 part plain refined white sugar with 4 parts water: for a small batch, use ¼ cup sugar and 1 cup water. Keep the feeder shaded, replace the nectar every two to three days—or daily in particularly hot weather—and clean the feeder whenever you refill it.
Fresh, correctly prepared nectar can keep a feeder available as supplemental food, but it cannot guarantee more visits. Whether hummingbirds find or use a feeder depends on local birds and conditions, as Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society explain in their feeding guidance and hummingbird-friendly yard advice.
The two-ingredient hummingbird nectar recipe
Use plain refined white sugar and water in a 1:4 ratio by volume. You can scale the recipe with any measuring unit, as long as you use the same unit for both ingredients.
| Batch | Refined white sugar | Water |
|---|---|---|
| Small | ¼ cup | 1 cup |
| Medium | ½ cup | 2 cups |
| Large | 1 cup | 4 cups |
How to prepare the nectar
- Measure 1 part plain refined white sugar and 4 parts water.
- Stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Audubon recommends briefly boiling the solution; Cornell Lab says boiling is unnecessary for small batches used within a day or two and is sensible when making a larger batch for refrigeration.
- Let the solution cool completely before filling the feeder.
- Refrigerate any extra nectar in a clean, covered container and bring it to room temperature before use.

What not to add
Keep the recipe simple: do not add honey, artificial sweeteners, brown sugar, raw or unrefined sugar, or red food coloring. Natural flower nectar is clear, and colored feeder parts can provide a visual cue without dyeing the solution. Cornell Lab and Audubon both advise against red dye and unsuitable sugar substitutes. See Cornell Lab’s explanation of red food coloring in hummingbird food.
Keep the feeder fresh and clean
Place the feeder in shade to slow spoilage. Replace the nectar every two to three days in ordinary conditions, daily in particularly hot weather, and immediately if it looks cloudy. Audubon and Cornell Lab give similar freshness guidance.

Cornell Lab discusses additional cleaning methods in its feeder-care guidance; use only methods suitable for your feeder and rinse thoroughly.
Choosing a feeder
The best feeder for your needs is one you can clean thoroughly and size to how quickly local birds use the nectar. Cornell Lab emphasizes that easy cleaning makes it more likely a feeder will be cleaned often and well.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can it come apart fully? | Disassembly helps you reach the parts that need cleaning. |
| Can you scrub openings and crevices? | Hard-to-reach areas can make thorough cleaning difficult. |
| Does its capacity fit local use? | A feeder suited to how quickly birds empty it helps avoid leaving nectar standing unnecessarily. |
| What do its care instructions allow? | Cleaning methods should suit the feeder’s materials. |
Support hummingbirds beyond the feeder
Sugar water is supplemental food, not a replacement for natural food sources. Audubon recommends native plants and flowering plants as part of a hummingbird-friendly yard. Avoid treating a feeder as a substitute for habitat.

Should I use red food coloring in hummingbird food?
No. Natural flower nectar is clear, and red dye is unnecessary. Use plain sugar and water; colored feeder parts can provide a visual cue.
Can I use honey or brown sugar instead of white sugar?
No. The cited guidance recommends plain refined white sugar and advises against honey, brown sugar, and raw or unrefined sugars.
Does this recipe guarantee more hummingbird visits?
No. Correctly prepared, fresh nectar makes a feeder available as supplemental food, but the cited guidance does not establish that this recipe increases visits to a particular yard. Local bird presence and conditions matter.
The Bottom Line
Mix ¼ cup plain refined white sugar with 1 cup water, cool the solution, and use it in a clean, shaded feeder. Replace nectar regularly, clean the feeder whenever you refill it, and remember that a feeder supplements—not replaces—natural food sources.
