A Yellowstone spokesperson said wildlife was not leaving the park in large numbers; elk and bison do move seasonally, and some cross park boundaries as part of ordinary migrations.
Videos shared in July 2025 did not establish a Yellowstone-wide exodus: fact-checkers traced some clips to other places, while other footage showed real animals taken out of context. Seasonal movement is not evidence that animals sensed a volcanic event.
What the Yellowstone wildlife-exodus rumor claimed
In July 2025, social-media posts claimed that elk, grizzly bears, bison, and mountain lions were fleeing Yellowstone, sometimes heading toward Salt Lake City. Some posts said the animals were responding to an impending eruption of the Yellowstone volcanic system.
Yellowstone National Park spokesperson Linda Veress told PolitiFact that “wildlife is not leaving Yellowstone National Park in large numbers” and that there is no scientific evidence wildlife can sense impending earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The phrase addressed the alleged emergency-scale departure; it does not mean animals never cross the park boundary.

What officials and fact-checkers found
PolitiFact reviewed videos and spoke with the National Park Service and researcher Benjamin Van Doren, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who studies migratory animals. Van Doren said large mammals move around in search of food resources that change through the year, and that he knew of no evidence animals were moving in or out of Yellowstone unusually. The PolitiFact report found the viral claims baseless.
The videos were not all from one event. PolitiFact traced mountain-lion footage to Chilean Patagonia and bear footage to Bear Country U.S.A., a South Dakota drive-through wildlife attraction. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) also recounts an earlier bison clip that showed animals running toward the park interior, despite posts describing them as running away.
Some footage was real, but its location, date, or interpretation was wrong. A video or caption alone does not establish that animals crossed a park boundary, that their movement was unusual, or that it was caused by volcanic activity.
Why Yellowstone animals really move
Yellowstone wildlife moves through a broader landscape, and some animals cross the park boundary. The National Park Service explains that bison range across Yellowstone and nearby areas of Montana. Elk migration timing and routes also vary with seasonal vegetation growth and snow depth.

These movements can change from year to year. Bison migration varies with weather, and elk may migrate outside the park, where Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks seasons can apply. Those documented movements are different from a sudden, unusual, multi-species departure.
Bison: migration and management vary
Bison may migrate during winter and spring into limited tolerance areas in Montana along Yellowstone’s northern and western boundaries. The NPS says bison are managed as they migrate out of the park; state and Tribal hunts may occur in those Montana areas. Management actions are not evidence that animals are fleeing. The NPS’s bison management information describes this process and the coordination among agencies and Tribal entities.
The NPS estimated nearly 5,300 Yellowstone bison in 2025. Separately, it reported approximately 925 bison removed during winter 2024–25: 97 placed in the Bison Conservation Transfer Program, 769 transferred to Tribes through the Tribal Food Transfer Program, and 59 harvested by state hunters or Tribal members. These are dated bison figures, not a count of all Yellowstone wildlife or evidence of a mass exodus.
Elk: seasonal routes follow conditions
The NPS says the timing and routes of northern Yellowstone elk migration follow seasonal vegetation growth and snow depth. Some elk migrate outside the park, where hunting seasons are managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. A boundary crossing or a group seen outside the park does not, by itself, show an unusual departure.

Did Yellowstone animals sense an impending eruption?
The reviewed sources provide no evidence that Yellowstone animals were responding to an impending eruption. Veress told PolitiFact there is no scientific evidence that wildlife can sense impending earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Van Doren likewise said he knew of no evidence animals were moving in or out of Yellowstone unusually.
Animals may respond to environmental conditions, but anecdotal behavior or a video is not a reliable eruption warning. The USGS and YVO’s account of the rumor does not identify animal movement as evidence of an impending volcanic event.
How to evaluate the next viral Yellowstone wildlife clip
- Check the location. Look for the original source and independent confirmation that the footage was filmed in Yellowstone.
- Check the date. An upload date does not establish when the video was recorded.
- Identify the animals and setting. A managed wildlife attraction is not the same as wild animals in the park.
- Look for evidence of a boundary crossing. Animals moving in a group do not necessarily mean they are leaving the park.
- Compare the claim with reliable reporting. Check NPS, YVO, and fact-checking sources rather than relying on a dramatic caption or an unverified count.
What bison management means outside Yellowstone
Bison movement beyond the park involves land-use and jurisdictional issues. The NPS says management concerns include brucellosis transmission risk to cattle, competition for grass, safety, and property damage. The Interagency Bison Management Plan coordinates federal and state agencies and Tribal entities while each retains its own authority.
The NPS’s 2025 wildlife handbook says bison and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem carry brucellosis and describes the plan’s goal of sustaining a wild, wide-ranging bison population while reducing transmission risk to cattle. Management and population-control actions should not be presented as evidence that animals are fleeing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are animals leaving Yellowstone in large numbers?
The reviewed sources do not document the viral claim as a measured event. A Yellowstone spokesperson said wildlife was not leaving the park in large numbers. Elk and bison do move seasonally, and some cross the boundary.
Were the viral Yellowstone wildlife videos fake?
Not all the footage was fake. PolitiFact traced mountain-lion footage to Chilean Patagonia and bear footage to a South Dakota wildlife attraction; other footage was misrepresented. The clips did not substantiate a Yellowstone-wide exodus.
Do bison and elk leave Yellowstone naturally?
Yes. NPS describes seasonal movement by both species. Bison may migrate into limited tolerance areas in Montana, while elk migration routes and timing follow vegetation growth and snow depth. These movements do not establish an emergency departure.
How many Yellowstone bison were removed in winter 2024–25?
The NPS reported that approximately 925 bison were removed during that winter: 97 placed in a conservation transfer program, 769 transferred to Tribes, and 59 harvested by state hunters or Tribal members. These are bison-management figures, not a measure of a wildlife exodus.
Can animal behavior predict a Yellowstone eruption?
The sources reviewed provide no evidence that animal behavior can reliably predict an impending Yellowstone eruption. The viral videos and claims did not establish such a connection.
The Bottom Line
The viral claim that Yellowstone wildlife was fleeing in large numbers because of an impending eruption is unsupported. Some videos came from outside Yellowstone or were taken out of context, while elk and bison do make ordinary, seasonal movements, sometimes across park boundaries. Keep those documented migrations distinct from an unverified mass-exodus claim.
