A 2025 technical report estimates more than 2.1 million egg cases in a defined upper section of the seamount; this is an area-based estimate, not a direct count of every case across the full seamount or complex. Adult skates and likely egg-laying behavior have also been observed there, but the full nursery boundary remains unknown.
The nursery is among deep-sea coral habitat on a venting volcanic seamount. Researchers are investigating whether heat or other conditions associated with venting affect embryos, but a benefit to development or survival has not been established at this site.
What did researchers find?
The nursery is on NEPDEP 58 Seamount in the Tuzo Wilson Seamount Complex off British Columbia, within Haida territorial waters. Researchers have observed dense egg-case groupings among bamboo coral and documented adult skates and likely egg-laying behavior across years. The 2025 technical report describes the summit of NEPDEP 58 as a skate nursery.
The report’s estimate covers the mapped area above a depth boundary of 1,665 metres. That defined area is about 0.8 square kilometres. Researchers estimated more than 2.1 million egg cases there using observed density and mapped area; the nursery’s boundary is not yet known, so this is not a census of the full seamount or complex.

How many egg cases were found?
| Evidence | What it means |
|---|---|
| 5,566 cases counted | Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation counted cases in 489 non-overlapping images covering approximately 4,909 square metres. |
| 2.58 cases per square metre | The report’s mean observed density used for its area-based estimate. |
| More than 2.1 million estimated cases | An estimate for about 0.8 square kilometres above the report’s 1,665-metre depth boundary, not a direct count across the entire seamount. |
| More than 60% not confidently identified in situ | Most cases in the image counts could not be assigned confidently to a species by visual identification. |
These figures come from the 2025 Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Council of the Haida Nation technical report. The report notes that cases collect in piles and rock crevices, meaning the estimate may be lower than the actual number in the defined study area.
Which skates laid the eggs?
Adult skates visually identified at the complex include Pacific white skate (Bathyraja spinosissima), Arctic/Boreal skate (Amblyraja hyperborea), and abyssal skate. In the image counts, identifiable egg cases were assigned to Pacific white skate or Amblyraja hyperborea. However, more than 60% of counted cases could not be confidently identified in situ, so it would be misleading to attribute every case to one species.
Skates are egg-laying cartilaginous fishes related to rays and sharks. The large, leathery capsules are often called mermaid’s purses. Fisheries and Oceans Canada describes skate capsules as having a curved or convex side, a flatter opposite side, and horn-like tendrils that act as anchoring structures. The exact anchoring mechanism of naturally deposited egg cases has not been observed directly.

Why are the eggs on a volcanic seamount?
The site combines a hard seafloor, bamboo-coral habitat, and conditions that adult skates use for laying eggs. Researchers have also documented venting and elevated temperatures at the seamount. Whether vent-related heat or other environmental conditions influence embryos is an open research question.

A direct benefit to development or survival has not been demonstrated for this nursery, so faster hatching or better survival should not be presented as established fact.
Is the seamount actively erupting?
The research describes NEPDEP 58 as an active, venting volcanic seamount. Venting and localized elevated temperatures do not by themselves establish that an eruption is occurring. The evidence in the 2025 report supports describing the site as a venting volcanic seamount, while questions about its conditions and effects on skates remain under study.

How do scientists know it is a nursery?
Researchers point to dense egg-case groupings, repeated observations across years, adult skates at the site, and individuals observed laying eggs or displaying likely egg-laying behavior. Together, these findings support the nursery interpretation. The complete nursery boundary and full reproductive cycle at the site remain to be documented.
The report also estimates more than 78,000 new Pacific white skate egg cases per year across its estimated 0.8-square-kilometre area, based on 2023–2024 time-series data. This is a source-based estimate, not a direct annual count of every new case.
Why the coral habitat matters
The egg cases occur among bamboo coral and other deep-sea habitat. The 2025 report describes the nursery, coral garden, and precious coral bed as vulnerable to physical contact, and notes that bottom-contact fishing has occurred on the complex’s seamounts. Damage to this habitat could affect the structures where cases gather as well as the wider seamount community.

Is the nursery protected?
The 2025 Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Council of the Haida Nation report states that, as of January 2025, the Tuzo Wilson Seamount Complex was outside existing or proposed marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures. The research available here does not establish whether that status changed after January 2025, so that dated statement should not be treated as current in October 2026.
What researchers still need to learn
- Where is the full boundary of the nursery, and how many egg cases are present across it?
- How do venting and local temperatures affect embryos and incubation conditions?
- Which species produced the cases that could not be confidently identified in situ?
- How do adult skates use the site over time, and what happens to young after hatching?
- What physical and fishing pressures affect the egg cases and coral habitat?
Frequently Asked Questions
How many skate egg cases were found?
A 2025 technical report estimates more than 2.1 million cases in a defined area of about 0.8 square kilometres above a depth boundary of 1,665 metres. It is an area-based estimate, not a direct count across the entire seamount or complex.
What kind of skate laid the eggs?
Identifiable egg cases included Pacific white skate (Bathyraja spinosissima) and Arctic/Boreal skate (Amblyraja hyperborea). More than 60% of the counted cases could not be confidently identified in situ, so not every case can be assigned to a species.

Why are the eggs on a volcano?
Researchers have observed egg cases and adult skates among bamboo coral on a venting volcanic seamount. They are investigating whether heat or other conditions affect embryos, but a benefit to development or survival has not been established.
Are the eggs safe from predators?
No. Skate egg cases can be preyed upon; Fisheries and Oceans Canada notes predators can include gastropods and larger sharks. The research summarized here does not establish the level of predation at this nursery.
Is the Tuzo Wilson Seamount Complex protected?
The 2025 report says the complex was outside existing or proposed marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures as of January 2025. The available research does not verify whether that status changed afterward.
The Bottom Line
Researchers have documented a major skate egg-case nursery on NEPDEP 58 Seamount off British Columbia. The 2025 report estimates more than 2.1 million cases in a defined upper area, while the full nursery boundary remains unknown and many cases cannot be confidently identified to species. The seamount is venting and volcanic, but whether its conditions benefit embryo development or survival remains an open question.
