They represent different branches, regions and environments rather than a complete list of extinct elephants. Mammoths were close relatives of living elephants, while straight-tusked elephants belonged to a separate genus that ranged across much of the Old World.
The dates also need care. A species’ last appearance in the fossil record is not necessarily the date when every population vanished, and different sources use regional evidence. The last known woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mammoths had disappeared from much of mainland North America.

What counts as an extinct elephant?
“Elephant” can mean either a living animal in the family Elephantidae or, more broadly, a member of the elephant lineage within the order Proboscidea. That wider group included many extinct forms. Mastodons, for example, were proboscideans but were not mammoths or close substitutes for the elephant species discussed here.

The three examples in this article are useful because they show how varied extinct elephantids were. The woolly mammoth is the familiar cold-adapted mammoth; the Columbian mammoth lived mainly in southern North America and was not specialized for extreme cold; and the straight-tusked elephant belonged to Palaeoloxodon, a lineage spread through Africa, Europe and Asia.

The Natural History Museum describes roughly ten mammoth species. That diversity is why “mammoth” should not be treated as a synonym for “woolly mammoth.”
Three species at a glance

Measurements in the table are source-reported estimates. They should not be read as exact limits for every individual or population.
1. Woolly mammoth
Identity and appearance
The woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius, is the species most people picture when they hear “mammoth”: a shaggy elephant with a heavy coat, a high shoulder hump and long, curved tusks. Its anatomy and covering were suited to severe Ice Age climates, but it was only one member of a much larger mammoth radiation.
The Natural History Museum lists around ten mammoth species. Some lived in warmer environments and did not share the woolly mammoth’s extreme cold adaptations. This distinction matters when interpreting fossils: a mammoth bone does not automatically identify a woolly mammoth.
Relationship to living elephants
Mammoths were close relatives of living elephants, particularly the Asian elephant, according to the Illinois State Museum. That relationship does not mean a woolly mammoth was simply an oversized modern Asian elephant. It was a separate species with its own evolutionary history, adaptations and geographic range.
When did woolly mammoths disappear?
Woolly mammoths vanished from most of their range near the end of the Ice Age, but extinction was staggered. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the Natural History Museum report that the last populations on Wrangel Island survived until about 4,000 years ago. That is a population-specific survival date, not a claim that woolly mammoths remained widespread until then.

Genetic and fossil evidence shows that isolated survivors can persist after a species has disappeared from continents. Small island populations may face different pressures from mainland herds, including restricted habitat and reduced genetic diversity.
2. Columbian mammoth
Where and when it lived
The U.S. National Park Service reports that Columbian mammoths first appeared about 420,000 years ago. Fossils are associated with the southern United States, where conditions were generally less frigid than those occupied by woolly mammoths. The species was not adapted to extreme cold, so “mammoth” should not be used as shorthand for a permanently frozen habitat.
Size estimates
On its Columbian mammoth page updated in 2026, the National Park Service gives an average shoulder height of 3.7 to 4.3 metres (12 to 14 feet) and an approximate weight of 8,000 to 9,000 kilograms (17,600 to 19,800 pounds). These are estimates for the species as presented by that source, not a guaranteed measurement for every fossil or individual.
An evolutionary mixture revealed by DNA
Ancient DNA evidence described by the National Park Service indicates ancestry involving Eurasian woolly mammoths, North American woolly mammoths and an unidentified Siberian mammoth type. The Natural History Museum also cites DNA evidence for a hybrid origin of Columbian mammoths. The finding illustrates that mammoth evolution included population mixing and branching, rather than a simple ladder from one species to another.
How its extinction date is reported
The Natural History Museum places the last Columbian mammoth appearances in the fossil record at about 12,000 years ago. A National Park Service page about White Sands gives a broader extinction interval of 13,000 to 10,000 years ago. These statements are not necessarily contradictory: they use different evidence and geographic framing. A fossil “last appearance” records the youngest known evidence found so far; it does not prove that every individual died on that exact date.
3. Straight-tusked elephant
A different genus from mammoths
The straight-tusked elephant belongs to the genus Palaeoloxodon, not Mammuthus. The species Palaeoloxodon antiquus is the straight-tusked elephant identified for mainland Europe in the Natural History Museum’s account. Its name refers to relatively straight tusks compared with the strongly curved tusks commonly associated with woolly mammoths.

Range during the Pleistocene
The Natural History Museum describes straight-tusked elephants as widespread through Africa, Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene, which it dates from 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago. This broad distribution places the genus in a very different geographic story from the Columbian mammoth’s southern North American range.
The mainland species also gave rise to island dwarf species. Islands can impose strong limits on food and space, and descendants may evolve much smaller bodies than their mainland ancestors. The cited material establishes that this island diversification occurred, but it does not provide a single body-size sequence or a universal extinction date for every island population.
How large was it?
The Natural History Museum reports straight-tusked elephants reaching up to 4.5 metres tall. “Up to” indicates a maximum reported height, not the average height of the species. It is therefore best used to convey scale rather than to compare every individual directly with the National Park Service’s average Columbian mammoth measurements.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWere all mammoths woolly?
No. The Natural History Museum recognizes around ten mammoth species, and the Columbian mammoth is a clear counterexample to the idea that every mammoth was a shaggy, extreme-cold specialist. Columbian mammoths lived in southern North America and were not adapted to extreme cold. DNA research further indicates a complicated ancestry involving woolly-mammoth-related populations.
“Mammoth” is therefore a genus-level or common-group label, while “woolly mammoth” identifies one particular species. Using the terms precisely prevents a cold-climate image from being projected onto mammoths that occupied different habitats.
How the three examples differ
Lineage
Woolly and Columbian mammoths are both members of Mammuthus. The straight-tusked elephant is a member of Palaeoloxodon. All belong to the elephant side of proboscidean evolution, but they are not three versions of one species.

Geography
Columbian mammoths are associated with southern North America. Straight-tusked elephants ranged across Africa, Europe and Asia. Woolly mammoths occupied Ice Age regions of Eurasia and North America, with a late island refuge on Wrangel Island. Their ranges overlapped in broad chronological terms without being identical.

The woolly mammoth was the strongest cold-adaptation example among the three. The National Park Service specifically says Columbian mammoths were not adapted to extreme cold. The available description of straight-tusked elephants emphasizes their wide Old World distribution rather than assigning them the woolly mammoth’s specialized cold package.
Chronology
The Columbian mammoth first appears in the National Park Service account about 420,000 years ago. Straight-tusked elephants are placed within the Pleistocene span of 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago. Woolly mammoth survival lasted in some isolated populations until about 4,000 years ago. These dates describe different events—first appearance, geological period, fossil last appearance or last known population survival—so they should not be lined up as if they measured the same thing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What caused these elephants to go extinct?
There is no single proven cause that explains every extinct elephant species and population. Museum sources discuss several contributors, and their importance may have differed by place and time.
Climate change
The end of the Ice Age changed temperature, vegetation and the distribution of open habitats. The Natural History Museum presents climate change as one possible explanation for mammoth losses. A changing environment could reduce suitable forage or split a once-continuous range into smaller areas.
Human hunting
Human hunting is another possible contributor discussed by the Natural History Museum. Hunting pressure would have mattered differently for large continental herds and for small, isolated populations. The evidence does not justify assigning the same level of hunting impact to every species or region.

Evolutionary specialization
Professor Adrian Lister of the Natural History Museum has suggested that becoming overspecialized may have contributed to extinction. In his explanation, adaptations that helped elephants survive arid climates and expanding grasslands could become liabilities when conditions shifted. This is an evolutionary interpretation, not a complete explanation for all extinct elephants.
Genetic vulnerability
Separate museum research notes that reduced genetic diversity may have contributed to the decline of some mammoth populations. Isolation can reduce variation and make recovery from disease, environmental change or demographic shocks more difficult. This factor is especially relevant when considering the final island survivors, but it should not be treated as a demonstrated universal cause for every population.
How to interpret extinction dates responsibly
- First appearance: the earliest evidence currently used to place a species in the record, such as the Columbian mammoth’s reported appearance about 420,000 years ago.
- Last fossil appearance: the youngest dated fossil or other accepted evidence known to a source. It can move when new discoveries are made.
- Regional extinction: the disappearance of a species from one area, which may happen before it vanishes everywhere.
- Last surviving population: evidence for a particular refuge, such as woolly mammoths on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago.
Using the right label keeps a precise date from being mistaken for a worldwide, exact-day extinction event.
Why these three species are useful examples
Together, they show that extinct elephants were not a single Ice Age stereotype. The woolly mammoth demonstrates extreme cold adaptation and long survival in an isolated refuge. The Columbian mammoth shows that mammoths also lived in warmer southern environments, reached enormous sizes and had a complex hybrid history. The straight-tusked elephant demonstrates a separate genus with a range spanning three continents and descendants that included island dwarfs.
They are illustrative, not exhaustive. Many other elephantids and proboscideans existed, and their fossils may tell different stories about climate, movement, body size and extinction. The safest general conclusion is that elephant evolution produced a diverse set of lineages, while extinction unfolded at different times and for a combination of local and global reasons.
