Petunia’s story began with an old, painful injury and a right hind-leg amputation. After recovering in ASPCA care, she was adopted by Cam and Cade in December 2025. Her new family says she gradually grew more confident at home—and brought more laughter into their lives.
Petunia’s path from injury to adoption
Just before Halloween 2025, the NYPD received a call about a one-year-old dog with a leg injury. Petunia was transferred to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center. The ASPCA reports that she was underweight, had old fractures in her right femur and pelvis, and could not walk on her right hind limb.

Dr. Kovach, the ASPCA’s director of veterinary services, said the fractures were too old to address surgically. Petunia’s right hind limb was amputated the day after she arrived. The ASPCA says she recovered well and gradually warmed to staff. Read the ASPCA’s account of Petunia’s story.

Cam had followed ASPCA adoption listings for about three years. She saw Petunia’s profile roughly two hours after it was posted. Before adopting, Cam and Cade considered their second-floor apartment, nearby park, schedules, budget, and whether they could meet Petunia’s energy needs. They also researched what caring for a three-legged dog might involve. They adopted Petunia in December 2025.

Confidence grew gradually in her new home
At first, Petunia was afraid to go outside. Cam said that with time she became more comfortable: she eventually walked a route where she had initially cowered. Outdoors, she might greet people when she was not absorbed in sniffing or carrying a stick.
Cam also said Petunia had potty-training accidents during the first couple of weeks, which then resolved. That is part of this family’s experience, not a timetable that can be assumed for every newly adopted dog.

Walks, rest breaks, and time together
Cam and Cade enjoy taking Petunia on walks and watching her investigate children, animals, sounds, and scents. On longer outings, they bring a shoulder bag and carry her when she gets tired. The ASPCA account says Petunia enjoys being held and settles into the carrier. For a small dog who needs a lift during an outing, a small-dog shoulder carrier is one option to consider; Petunia’s story does not establish that every three-legged dog needs one.
Neighbors often recognize Petunia on walks, giving Cam and Cade a chance to connect with people in their community. At home, the family also enjoys quiet couch time together.
