Find low-cost pet care and upcoming clinics
Navajo Nation Pets describes monthly low-cost clinics that may offer spay/neuter procedures, vaccinations, wellness care, and other services. Check the Navajo Nation Pets home page for the clinic calendar, then contact the organizer before making the trip. Dates and services can change, and a calendar listing alone may not answer every question about eligibility, hours, location, or fees.

A flyer for a Tuba City mobile clinic on November 16–17, 2024, is historical, not a current event listing. It described a clinic at Tuba City Chapter House and included some free vaccinations and fees for other services; those dates and prices should not be treated as current. See the 2024 Tuba City clinic flyer only for the details of that past event.

For reporting categories and local contacts for Shiprock, Fort Defiance, Crownpoint, Many Farms, Kayenta, and Tuba City, consult the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife Animal Control page. Explain where the animal is and what happened when you call. If it is safe, give a clear description; do not approach an animal that may bite or is badly injured.
Understand the basic animal-control rules
The Navajo Nation Pets animal-control law summary says owners should provide food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and suitable space. Its wording is: “Provide your pet with food, water, shelter, vet care, and space where they can freely sleep, walk around, and use the bathroom within your property.”

The same page is a simplified summary, not the full ordinance or legal advice. It describes these responsibilities and restrictions:
- Care: Provide basic necessities, veterinary care, and appropriate space.
- Licensing and identification: Dogs and cats over three months must be licensed annually, with a license and rabies tag; proof of rabies vaccination is required for licensing, and the summary says microchipping is mandatory.
- Restraint: Dogs must remain on the owner’s premises, on a leash, or in a car. The summary says cats may run loose, while female pets in heat must be confined.
- Household limits: The summary states a limit of four dogs and four cats per household, subject to housing lease limits.
- Penalties: It gives a fine range of $50 to $200 for violations; the applicable penalty depends on the ordinance.
For the exact legal requirements and penalties, review the full ordinance linked from the summary or contact Animal Control. Leashes, collars, and ID tags can help with restraint or reunification, but they do not replace licensing, rabies documentation, or required microchipping.

Check whether an incentive is current
The Navajo Nation Pets incentive page lists a one-time spay/neuter incentive of $40 for female pets and $30 for male pets for procedures completed from October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025. That period has ended, so the listed amounts are not a current offer. The page describes submission documents for that expired program, but do not rely on those requirements or assume a new incentive is available without a current announcement. Check the incentive page for updated information.
Are there reliable estimates of stray-animal numbers?
The reviewed local and official pages do not establish a robust, dated current estimate of companion-animal numbers across the Navajo Nation. A wellness-group page repeats a figure of “500,000” for stray companion animals across Native American reservations in the Southwest, but gives no underlying study, publisher, or year. It should not be presented as a verified Navajo Nation statistic.
