The Timothy Treadwell bear-attack audio is the audio-only ending of a camera tape recovered after Treadwell and Amie Huguenard died at their Katmai National Park campsite in October 2003. The Alaska State Troopers’ case report says the video image stopped while the tape continued recording sound for approximately six minutes and 21 seconds. Werner Herzog’s documentary Grizzly Man shows him listening to the recording but does not play it.

What the recovered tape contains

The Alaska State Troopers identified the recovered camera as a Sony Digital Video Camera, model DCR-VX2000. According to the case report, its video stopped, but the tape continued recording audio shortly afterward. The report describes one male and one female voice and says the audio appears to record a bear attack on Treadwell. This is an investigator’s description, not a published forensic transcript.

The report gives the audio-only segment’s duration as approximately six minutes and 21 seconds. It calculates the recording time as October 5, 2003, from 1:47:23 to 1:53:44 p.m. local time, after noting that the camera clock was three hours ahead. See the Alaska State Troopers case report in the National Park Service FOIA case file.

Why reports give different durations

Early news coverage used a shorter estimate. The Los Angeles Times reported a three-minute audiotape on October 9, 2003; the later-accessed case report specifies approximately six minutes and 21 seconds for the audio-only portion. These figures come from different accounts and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Contemporaneous reports also cautioned that much of the recording was fuzzy or inaudible, and one trooper said he could not distinguish all human and animal sounds. Accordingly, reported snippets should not be presented as a complete or verified transcript. The Los Angeles Times report and the Associated Press report published by CBS News provide the early coverage.

Is the attack audio in Grizzly Man?

No. Grizzly Man does not play the attack audio. It shows Herzog listening to it. In a July 28, 2005 interview with Fresh Air, Herzog said he listened with Jewel Palovak, who held Treadwell’s materials, and decided against publication. He explained: “You have to respect the privacy of and the dignity of an individual death. You don’t drag it into the open.” That is Herzog’s stated decision and rationale, not an official legal finding. The Fresh Air interview with Dave Davies records his account.

Was the recording released, and where is it now?

Available historical accounts describe decisions not to make the recording public. CBS/AP reported that officials did not plan to release the recording or a transcript. Herzog said in 2005 that he chose not to publish it and that Palovak kept the tape in a bank safe-deposit box at that time. Those statements do not establish the recording’s present custody or condition, nor do they authenticate copies claimed to be online.

The case report says working copies of the video, audio, and journal photocopies were destroyed after the original materials were sent for return to the Treadwell estate. That refers to working copies; it does not say the original audio was destroyed. Herzog’s 2005 account is a historical custody statement, not confirmation of where the original is now.
