The headline likely refers to Titanoboa cerrejonensis, a giant snake known from fossils excavated at Colombia’s Cerrejón coal mine. A 2009 study estimated it at about 13 metres long and 1,135 kilograms, but those figures are reconstructions from incomplete remains—not measurements of a complete snake. Is Titanoboa bigger than a T. rex? It may have been longer, but the available figures do not establish that it was heavier or bigger overall. And a 2024 report of another giant fossil snake, Vasuki indicus, makes the title of largest snake uncertain.
What was the largest snake ever?
Titanoboa cerrejonensis was long described as the largest snake known. Its fossils came from Cerrejón, a coal mine in northern Colombia, where excavations uncovered remains from a Paleocene rainforest ecosystem. The Paleocene followed the end-Cretaceous extinction.
That superlative needs qualification today. A 2024 report on Vasuki indicus, a fossil snake from India, gave an estimated length of 11–15 metres. The estimate is based on incomplete vertebrae, and its range overlaps Titanoboa’s estimate while extending beyond it. The available evidence therefore does not establish a single, certain winner.
In 2009, the Smithsonian called Titanoboa “the largest snake ever known.” That was a description of the evidence available then, not a settled ranking in light of the later Vasuki report.

How big was Titanoboa?
Authors of the 2009 Nature study estimated Titanoboa at 13 metres long and 1,135 kilograms. Smithsonian’s 2009 account rounded its length to about 13 metres (42 feet) and described it as weighing more than a ton. These are estimates, not direct measurements of a complete skeleton or animal.
Researchers inferred length by measuring fossil vertebrae and comparing their dimensions with the relationship between vertebrae and body length in living snakes. The mass figure is likewise a reconstruction, not a scale reading from a preserved whole animal.

Is Titanoboa bigger than a T. rex?
It depends on what “bigger” means. Titanoboa’s estimated length is about 13 metres, but the available Smithsonian Tyrannosaurus rex fact sheet does not provide a numerical length or mass for a matched comparison. These sources therefore do not support a precise claim that Titanoboa was longer than a particular T. rex, or that it outweighed one.
- Length: The Titanoboa estimate is about 13 metres; without a comparable T. rex figure from the cited source, a numerical verdict is not established here.
- Mass: Titanoboa’s 1,135-kilogram figure is a reconstruction. It cannot be compared responsibly with an unsupported T. rex mass figure.
- Overall size: A long, slender snake can have a greater estimated length than a stockier animal without being heavier. Length alone does not settle which animal was bigger overall.
These measurements also do not answer who would win in an imagined encounter. Fossil size estimates are not evidence of a fight’s outcome.

Where and when did Titanoboa live?
Titanoboa lived during the Paleocene in the rainforest ecosystem represented by fossils from Cerrejón. Smithsonian accounts describe that ancient rainforest as warmer than modern rainforests and discuss climate conclusions drawn from the fossil evidence. The animal lived after the end-Cretaceous extinction, not alongside non-avian dinosaurs such as T. rex.

Both Titanoboa and Vasuki are known from incomplete fossil material. Their reported lengths depend on how vertebral measurements are translated into whole-body dimensions using comparisons and models; neither is a tape-measured length from a complete specimen. That uncertainty matters especially when estimates overlap or, as with Vasuki’s reported range, stretch above a previous record estimate.
