Repeated vomiting, appetite loss, pain, weakness, or possible toxin or foreign-object exposure calls for prompt veterinary advice.
First, check whether your cat actually vomited
What looks like vomiting may be regurgitation or coughing, and the distinction matters to a veterinarian.
| What you see | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Lip-licking, drooling, repeated swallowing, retching, abdominal contractions, and forceful expulsion | Vomiting |
| Material comes up passively, often soon after eating, and is largely undigested | Regurgitation |
| Hacking or coughing followed by froth or a small amount of fluid | Coughing |
If you can do so safely, record a video of the episode. A veterinarian may be able to distinguish a gastrointestinal problem from a respiratory one by the cat’s posture and movements.
Why is my cat vomiting clear liquid?
Minor, short-lived problems can cause an isolated episode, but more serious conditions can look similar at first. Clear vomit may be water, stomach fluid, mucus, or froth; its appearance does not identify the cause.

Stomach irritation or something inappropriate eaten
A cat may vomit after eating spoiled food, a plant, an insect, garbage, or unfamiliar food. A sudden diet change, new supplement, medication, or access to household substances is useful information for the veterinarian. Look for chewed plants, torn packaging, missing food, or spilled medication.
Drinking too much or too quickly
Some cats bring up clear fluid shortly after rapidly drinking. This explanation is more plausible when it happens once and the cat quickly returns to normal. If the cat repeatedly vomits after drinking or cannot keep water down, contact a veterinarian.
Hairball-related retching
Retching from a hairball does not always produce a hairball. A cat may leave a small puddle of clear or brown fluid instead. Repeated unproductive retching should not automatically be blamed on hairballs: a foreign object, obstruction, or another illness can cause similar movements.
An empty stomach
Clear fluid may later look white and foamy or yellow-green when it mixes with mucus or bile. An empty stomach can contribute to vomiting, but recurring “empty-stomach vomiting” should not be diagnosed at home as bilious vomiting syndrome. The condition is considered uncommon in cats, and other diseases can produce a similar pattern.

A foreign body or intestinal obstruction
String, yarn, ribbon, thread, rubber bands, needles, and small toys can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. Signs may include vomiting, poor appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, and, in severe cases, shock. An obstruction is an emergency.
Never pull string or thread from your cat’s mouth or anus. It may be anchored internally, and pulling can injure the intestine. Leave it alone and seek veterinary care.
An underlying disease
Frequent or persistent vomiting can occur with kidney disease, liver disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, parasites, infection, urinary obstruction, or gastrointestinal tumors. The vomit’s appearance cannot reliably distinguish among these conditions.
When should you call the veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat:
- Vomits more than twice in 24 hours, vomits repeatedly, or continues vomiting for more than a day.
- Is lethargic, weak, unusually withdrawn, feverish, or appears painful.
- Refuses food or cannot keep water down.
- Has diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, increased thirst, or changes in urination.
- Has blood or coffee-ground-like material in the vomit.
- May have swallowed string, a foreign object, medication, a poisonous plant, antifreeze, or another toxin.
- Has diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, pancreatitis, or another chronic condition.
Cornell Feline Health Center advises prompt evaluation for cats vomiting more than once a week or showing signs such as lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, blood in vomit, abnormal thirst or urination, or diarrhea. Kittens, older cats, overweight cats, diabetic cats, and cats with chronic illness may need advice sooner.

Emergency signs: go now
Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately if your cat:
- Collapses, cannot stand or walk, is unresponsive, or has severe weakness.
- Has difficulty breathing, seizures, pale or gray gums, severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, or repeated unproductive retching.
- Has profuse vomiting, suspected poisoning, or a possible intestinal obstruction.
- Is a male cat repeatedly straining in the litter box but producing little or no urine.
These signs may indicate shock, obstruction, poisoning, urinary blockage, or another rapidly worsening emergency. Repeated vomiting can also cause dehydration and electrolyte disturbances.
What to do while arranging veterinary care
- Remove hazards. Keep your cat away from plants, food scraps, string, medications, cleaners, and other possible hazards.
- Keep fresh water available. Do not withhold water unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to; withholding it can worsen dehydration.
- Do not force food or water. Do not give human anti-nausea drugs, antacids, painkillers, or other medicines unless prescribed for that cat by a veterinarian.
- Do not induce vomiting at home. If poisoning is possible, call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service before giving anything by mouth.
- Document what happened. Photograph or video the material and note the time, number of episodes, amount, color, texture, relation to meals, appetite, water intake, urination, stool, medications, and possible exposures.
- Follow veterinary advice about food. Once vomiting has stopped, a veterinarian may recommend small, frequent portions of an easily digested veterinary diet, followed by a gradual return to the usual food if vomiting does not recur.
Should you withhold food for 24 hours?
Do not automatically fast every vomiting cat for 24 hours. Older advice to withhold food for a full day is not appropriate for all cats. Cats that stop eating can develop hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, particularly if they are overweight. Sustained appetite loss can seriously affect a mature cat in as little as 24 hours.
Ask your veterinarian how to manage food based on your cat’s age, body condition, medical history, hydration, and severity of vomiting. Kittens, diabetic cats, overweight cats, and cats with chronic disease need especially prompt advice if they are not eating.

How a veterinarian finds the cause
Evaluation commonly starts with questions about the timeline, diet, medications, possible exposures, appetite, thirst, urination, and bowel movements, followed by a physical examination. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may recommend:
- Bloodwork to assess organ function, inflammation, blood sugar, and hydration-related problems.
- Urinalysis, particularly when kidney disease, diabetes, or urinary obstruction is possible.
- Fecal testing for parasites or infection.
- Abdominal X-rays to look for obstruction, abnormal gas patterns, or certain foreign objects.
- Ultrasound to examine the intestines, pancreas, liver, and other abdominal organs.
Serious cases may require hospitalization, intravenous fluids, prescription anti-nausea treatment, nutritional support, endoscopy, biopsy, or surgery. Suspected obstruction, masses, inflammatory bowel disease, or other serious causes may need further testing or treatment.
How to judge an isolated episode
A cat that vomits clear liquid once, remains alert, drinks normally, eats its next meal, and has no other symptoms can often be watched closely after you remove possible hazards. This is not a diagnosis. If vomiting returns or a warning sign appears, contact a veterinarian rather than repeatedly treating episodes as hairballs or an empty stomach.
FAQ
Is clear vomit less serious than yellow or bloody vomit?
Not necessarily. Clear vomit may be water, stomach fluid, mucus, or froth, but its appearance does not identify the cause. Repeated vomiting, appetite loss, pain, weakness, blood, or possible toxin or foreign-object exposure matters more than color alone.

Can I give my cat water after it vomits clear liquid?
Keep fresh water available, but do not force your cat to drink. If it vomits repeatedly after drinking or cannot keep water down, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Should I give my cat hairball medicine?
Do not assume repeated retching is a hairball problem. Unproductive retching can also occur with an obstruction or another illness. Ask your veterinarian before giving a hairball product, especially if your cat is vomiting repeatedly or seems unwell.
How many times can a cat vomit before seeing a vet?
Contact a veterinarian if your cat vomits more than twice in 24 hours, continues vomiting for more than a day, or vomits more than once weekly. Seek emergency care sooner for collapse, breathing trouble, severe pain, a swollen abdomen, suspected poisoning or obstruction, or inability to urinate in a male cat.
The Bottom Line
One isolated episode of clear liquid in an alert cat that continues eating may resolve, but clear vomit is not a diagnosis. Repeated vomiting, inability to keep water down, loss of appetite, abnormal behavior, pain, blood, dehydration, or possible toxin or foreign-object exposure requires veterinary assessment. Never pull visible string or induce vomiting at home.
