Top 10 Birds to See in Spain: A Habitat and Season Guide

Ten birds worth planning a Spanish trip around, grouped by habitat and season, with the limits of what published sources can promise.

Spain offers some of the most varied birdwatching in Europe, but the country is too large and too seasonal to see everything on one trip. The ten birds below are an editorial selection, chosen to show how wetlands, steppes, mountains, forests and coasts each attract different species at different times of year. No official body publishes a definitive ranking of Spain’s birds, so treat this as a planning list rather than a checklist you are guaranteed to complete.

A species can be widespread in a region and still be difficult to find on a particular visit. Weather, water levels, the time of day and the exact site all affect what you will see.

How many birds are there to choose from?

The SEO/BirdLife species guide for Spain, whose credits page carries an update timestamp of 11 December 2025, credits 632 species as habitually or occasionally present in, or recorded from, Spanish territory. Of these, 401 are classed as habitual and 231 as occasional. Habitual species occur with some regularity during breeding, migration, wintering or year-round periods. Occasional species are exceptional records, so they are the wrong target for most trips.

That split is the practical starting point: the ten birds below are all habitual species in the sense that they are regularly sought by visitors, but each one still depends on the right habitat and season.

The ten birds

1. Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti)

SEO/BirdLife describes this raptor as endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and resident, meaning it does not migrate out of the country. Its Spanish range is concentrated in the southwest. Breeding regions named by the same guide include Extremadura, DoƱana and the Guadalquivir marshes, Sierra Morena, the Montes de Toledo and the Central System. These are range facts, not a promise of easy viewing; the bird is scarce enough that a sighting usually rewards patience at the right location.

The SEO/BirdLife atlas records a long recovery. It reports 102 breeding pairs in 1989 and a minimum of 552 breeding pairs in 2018. The atlas attributes the trend, among other factors, to measures that reduced electrocution and poisoning and lowered disturbance. The 2018 figure is a minimum from an atlas, not a current census.

2. Great Bustard (Otis tarda)

Spain’s official tourism guidance recommends spring trips across the steppes to look for Great Bustards. The regions it names extend from VillafĆ”fila in Castile and León to Toledo, CĆ”ceres and La Serena in Extremadura, and the countryside around Madrid. The same source states that over half of the world population lives on the Iberian steppes; the page reviewed carries no publication year for that claim. No single site guarantees a sighting, so a route that covers several steppe areas gives you more than one chance.

Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

3. Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus)

Seville’s provincial tourism material lists the Greater Flamingo among the birds associated with DoƱana. It also describes a viewpoint at Dehesa de Abajo that overlooks a lagoon with flamingos and other waterbirds. That is regional visitor guidance rather than a current abundance report, so flamingo numbers at a given lagoon can change from one visit to the next.

4. Common Crane (Grus grus)

Spain’s national tourism guidance highlights winter as the season for large concentrations of European cranes and geese, and names DoƱana Marshes, Tablas de Daimiel, Albufera de Valencia and the Ebro Delta among wetlands for waterbirds. Seville’s provincial material also lists the Common Crane among DoƱana birds. Winter is the strongest season for this bird in the sources reviewed.

5. Greylag Goose (Anser anser)

The national guidance refers to winter concentrations of geese in general and does not single out the Greylag Goose. The same wetlands that suit cranes are the places to look, but you should confirm the species at each site with local information or the SEO/BirdLife species record before you plan around it.

6. Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)

Seville’s DoƱana tourism material lists the Griffon Vulture among its birds. Vultures are among the more reliable raptors to watch over open country, and the regional material places this species in the DoƱana landscape. For a more precise location or season than that, consult the species record rather than assuming a particular cliff or valley.

7. Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus)

Spain’s tourism wildlife page names the Black Vulture among its “five great” Iberian wildlife species. That makes it a strong candidate for a mountain or forest trip, but the sources reviewed do not give specific sites or seasons for seeing it, so treat any route as a starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Black Stork (Ciconia nigra)

Seville’s provincial material lists the Black Stork among the birds associated with DoƱana. Black Storks are shyer than the white stork that nests on Spanish rooftops and church towers, so they are usually found by walking quiet woodland edges and river valleys rather than by scanning open fields. Exact spots and timing are not established in the material available for this article.

9. Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus)

Spain’s tourism wildlife page points visitors to bearded vulture conservation programmes as a way of learning about the species. The page is useful for context, but it does not specify where or when to see one. Visitors who want a realistic sighting should combine the conservation information with local guidance from a guide or park office.

10. European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)

The European Bee-eater is a colourful bird that suits an editorial list of this kind, but the authoritative pages consulted do not establish its Spanish distribution, best sites or seasonal timing. This article therefore does not name a site or a season for it. Check the SEO/BirdLife species record for current information before planning a trip around it.

Steppe Spring VillafÔfila (Castile and León), Toledo, CÔceres and La Serena (Extremadura), Madrid countryside Great Bustard

Strait of Gibraltar and Andalusian ranges Not stated (described as a migration route between Europe and Africa) Strait of Gibraltar, Andalusian mountain ranges Not stated
Coasts and islands Not stated Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts and islands Seabirds in general; no shortlist species named

Spain’s official tourism guidance describes the Strait of Gibraltar as “a paradise for ornithologists.” That is promotional wording rather than an independent assessment, but it reflects the strait’s role as a migration corridor for birds moving between Europe and Africa.

Beyond the named regions, the same guidance points visitors to Extremadura, the steppes of Navarre, and the plains and forests of Castile and León.

Choosing between itineraries

The right route depends on which birds you want and when you can travel. A winter trip to the wetlands is the strongest match for cranes and geese, while a spring trip to the steppes is the official recommendation for Great Bustards. A southwest itinerary built around DoƱana and Extremadura covers several of the raptors and the flamingo in one area, but the sources reviewed do not give a seasonal ranking for them, so it is hard to say which month is best for the eagle versus the vulture.

Compare routes on four points: the habitat and target birds, the season, travel distance and access between sites, and whether a local guide would help you find birds that are hard to locate alone.

Practical planning

  • Bring a camera for wildlife photography. Spain’s official tourism site encourages wildlife photography and recommends bringing a camera. The sources reviewed do not recommend a particular model, lens or price.
  • Consider a guided birdwatching service. The official tourism page points readers to travel companies adapted to birdwatchers and links to regional birding resources. The sources do not verify any named operator’s current availability, so check directly before booking.
  • Check each species record before you go. The SEO/BirdLife species entries cover identification, presence and migration categories, habitat, distribution, population, ecology, threats and conservation. Use them to confirm timing and location for any bird on this list.
  • Confirm access and local conditions. Road access, opening times at wetlands and visitor facilities, and current bird activity are not covered by the general guidance and should be checked locally before you travel.
