The official AAHA resource is the 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines, published August 15, 2022, and updated in 2024. These ten facts explain what the guidance says, what it leaves to your veterinarian, and where its limits lie. The recommendations apply to canine vaccines licensed in the United States, so the details below are U.S.-focused.
What changed in 2024
1. Leptospirosis became a core vaccine for all dogs. AAHA’s guideline landing page notes that the 2022 resource was updated in 2024 to include leptospirosis as a recommended core vaccine for every dog. If you read older articles or handouts that list only distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and rabies as core, they predate that change. The guideline is not a 2024 publication; the 2024 change is an update to the 2022 document.
Which vaccines are core
2. “Core” means recommended for all dogs unless a specific medical reason argues against vaccinating. AAHA’s recommendations for core and noncore canine vaccines list the following as core:
- Distemper
- Adenovirus
- Parvovirus
- Leptospirosis (added in the 2024 update)
- Rabies, which is also governed by law (see fact 7)
3. Parainfluenza is labeled optional within the core combination. In AAHA’s official core and noncore vaccine table, parainfluenza appears as “+/- Parainfluenza” next to distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus. That notation means it is not a required component of the combination for every dog. Ask your veterinarian whether it belongs in your dog’s protocol rather than assuming it is included.

Why noncore does not mean unimportant
4. Noncore vaccines are matched to specific dogs. AAHA lists Lyme, Bordetella, canine influenza, and Western diamondback rattlesnake toxoid as noncore. These are recommended when a dog’s lifestyle, geography, or exposure risk justifies them. A vaccine that is noncore nationally can still be treated as core by an individual practice in a region where that disease is endemic. A noncore label therefore describes the national default, not whether the vaccine is worth discussing with your veterinarian.
Puppy and initial vaccination schedules
5. Puppies receive a series, not a single shot. For the distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus combination, AAHA lists at least three doses given between 6 and 16 weeks of age, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. A dog first vaccinated after 16 weeks of age receives two doses, also 2 to 4 weeks apart. Your puppy’s schedule should be built around the age at which the first dose is given, and gaps longer than the recommended spacing are a question for your veterinarian rather than something to correct on your own.

Booster intervals differ by vaccine
6. Boosters do not follow one shared calendar. Each vaccine has its own schedule in AAHA’s table, summarized below.
| Vaccine | Initial series (per AAHA table) | Booster interval (per AAHA table) |
|---|---|---|
| Distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus combination | Puppies: at least 3 doses, 6–16 weeks of age, 2–4 weeks apart. First vaccinated after 16 weeks: 2 doses, 2–4 weeks apart. | One dose within one year after the initial series, then every 3 years. |
| Leptospirosis | 2 doses, 2–4 weeks apart. | Annual. |
| Rabies | As required by law. | As required by law. |
The intervals above come from AAHA’s table. Product labels can specify different timing, so the label for the specific vaccine your dog receives should be checked before a booster is scheduled.

Rabies follows the law
7. Rabies timing is set by law, not by the guideline. AAHA’s table says to vaccinate against rabies as required by law. Local and state rules determine the initial age, booster timing, and vaccine acceptable for licensing. Confirm the current requirements with your veterinarian or the relevant local authority, particularly if you move between jurisdictions.
Lifestyle and location shape the add-ons
8. “Core for you” means the core set plus what fits your dog’s environment. AAHA’s FAQ describes a dog’s individual plan as the core vaccines for all dogs plus those appropriate to that dog’s environment and risk factors. AAHA’s companion article, Which canine vaccinations are ‘core’ for you?, frames the same question for owners. Its guiding question is what should be added to the core vaccines for this particular dog.

John Ellis, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVM, co-chair of the 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines Task Force, described the aim this way: the guidelines provide “a blueprint for developing vaccine protocols that address individualized risk and ensure that all dogs, no matter their lifestyle, are protected from disease, and that herd immunity is maintained.”

9. Missing or overdue records call for a veterinarian’s judgment. AAHA states that when a dog’s vaccination history is unknown, the benefits of vaccination generally outweigh the risks. For overdue vaccines, AAHA’s table directs veterinarians to the manufacturer’s instructions, and for rabies it points back to local law. Bring any vaccine certificates, clinic records, or rabies tags you have to your appointment, and do not guess at catch-up doses.

What the guideline does not replace
10. The guideline is a decision aid, not a substitute for product labels or your veterinarian. AAHA describes its recommendations as general and discretionary. They rest on risk assessment, the dog’s immune status, vaccine formulation, duration of immunity, adverse-event considerations, serology, and label instructions. Manufacturers’ labels and local requirements take precedence where they differ from the guideline. The AAHA sources reviewed do not give a numerical adverse-event rate, and they do not say whether a particular dog should delay or avoid vaccination. Prior reactions, contraindications, titer interpretation, and catch-up schedules belong with your veterinarian and the vaccine’s labeling.
Quick Recap
- Ask which core vaccines your dog needs and whether leptospirosis is included in your plan.
- Ask which noncore vaccines match your dog’s exposure, and why.
- Ask for the booster dates for each vaccine, not one shared date.
- Confirm your local rabies requirements in writing.
