Use a topical flea and tick preventive only if its current label lists your pet’s species, age, and weight. Follow that product’s directions exactly, wash your hands after applying it, and keep treated pets apart until the product dries so they cannot groom one another. Ask a veterinarian about product choice if your pet is sick, medicated, pregnant or nursing, or has reacted to a treatment before.
Check species, age, and weight before treating
Match the product to the animal it is labeled for, and confirm that your pet meets its minimum age and weight requirements. A product intended for dogs must not be used on a cat: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically warns against this. Do not treat puppies or kittens unless the label permits use at their age and weight.

If a puppy or kitten is too young for a preventive, the FDA recommends using a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs and a tick remover for ticks. These tools do not replace veterinary guidance about parasite control.
How do I apply topical flea medicine safely?
There is no one application method or schedule that applies to every topical product. The application site, amount, frequency, bathing interval, and precautions can vary, so check the product’s current label and package insert each time. As the FDA puts it, “You should also carefully read the label, the package insert, and any accompanying literature to make sure you’re using the product correctly.” If the instructions are unclear, ask your veterinarian or the product manufacturer before applying it.

Can I use dog flea treatment on my cat?
No. Use only a product labeled for the animal you are treating. The FDA warns that dog flea and tick products should not be used on cats. If you are unsure which product or package is appropriate, confirm with a veterinarian before use.
How long should I keep pets apart after applying flea treatment?
Keep treated pets apart until the spot-on product dries. This helps prevent another pet from grooming the application site and ingesting the product. There is no universal drying time: follow the current product label for its specific handling instructions.

What should I do if my pet reacts to flea treatment?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your pet appears unwell after application. Signs the FDA lists include dizziness, wobbliness, incoordination, poor appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive salivation. Tell the veterinarian which product was used and when it was applied.
Do not assume that bathing is the right response for every reaction. The FDA says a veterinarian may recommend bathing depending on the product and circumstances. Follow veterinary advice rather than applying a general bathing rule. You can also report a problem with a flea or tick product through the FDA’s reporting guidance.

How can I check a product’s regulatory label?
Flea and tick products may be regulated by the FDA or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). FDA-approved animal drugs carry a NADA or ANADA number on the label; EPA-registered pesticides carry an EPA Registration Number. The FDA explains how to identify these numbers and use EPA’s label lookup system. This can help you verify the regulatory status and label information for a particular product.
