Trail cameras recorded two mature male Cross River gorillas (Gorilla gorilla diehli) in separate parts of Nigeria’s Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. The footage, announced by the Wilder Institute on June 18, 2024, is valuable evidence that the sanctuary remains important habitat—but it does not show that the gorilla population is growing or recovering.
What the trail cameras recorded
Cameras detected one mature male in the sanctuary’s southern area and another in the north. The Wilder Institute said the northern detection was particularly encouraging because that part of the sanctuary experiences more human activity.
The announcement described these as the first successful photos since three University of Calabar graduate students began studying the elusive subspecies the previous year. The records are detections in two locations; they do not establish two distinct populations or a change in the total number of gorillas.
Why the footage is significant—and what it cannot prove
Cross River gorillas are exceptionally difficult to observe directly. Camera detections provide useful monitoring evidence from parts of the forest where researchers might otherwise have little information. As student Adekambi Cole Adeyinka put it, “It underscores the Sanctuary’s importance as a habitat for these gorillas and highlights the effectiveness of trail cameras in monitoring their populations.”

A photograph confirms that an animal was present at a particular place and time. By itself, it cannot establish how many gorillas live in the sanctuary, their survival rates, or whether the population is increasing. The Wilder Institute presented the sighting as a source of data and hope, not as evidence of a measured recovery.
Where Cross River gorillas live
The Cross River gorilla is a subspecies of western gorilla found in mountainous rainforest along the Nigeria–Cameroon border. The Wilder Institute describes its range as 11 fragmented regions. Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, in Nigeria, is one of the places where the subspecies is monitored.

The Institute reported fewer than 250 mature individuals in 2014. That is a dated estimate, not a current census, and should not be read as a count derived from these camera images. The announcement identifies hunting and habitat loss as historical threats.
How the monitoring work involves local partners
The camera work was part of the Cross River Gorilla Initiative, launched in 2022 and led by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Research, with funding from the Wilder Institute. University of Calabar graduate students work with forest communities as part of the effort.

The Wilder Institute specifically credited M.Sc. student Adekambi Cole Adeyinka’s collaboration with local hunters and eco-guards in placing cameras. That community-linked approach helps researchers collect information in a difficult-to-monitor forest while involving people who know the area.
University of Calabar professor Francis E. Bisong said, “These findings highlight the sanctuary’s vital role and the need for more research and collaboration to conserve the Cross River gorilla and the region’s rich biodiversity.”
