Tui Na for Dogs: Four Veterinary Uses, Evidence, and Safety Limits

Tui-na can complement veterinary care for some dogs, especially those with osteoarthritis, but evidence varies sharply by use. Here are four applications, study limits, practical steps and safety precautions.

Tui-na is a hands-on massage and manual therapy used within integrative veterinary care. In dogs, the most defensible applications are adjunctive support for osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain, rehabilitation after selected soft-tissue injuries, gentle mobility work for some older dogs, and carefully supervised inclusion in certain neurological or disc-related rehabilitation plans. Evidence is not equally strong across these uses: a small randomized canine trial supports cautious claims for osteoarthritis, while the other applications rely mainly on a case report or professional guidance rather than controlled canine trials.

What is Tui-na for dogs?

Tui-na (also written Tui Na or tuina) is a hands-on therapy derived from traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM). A practitioner uses techniques such as pressing, rubbing, kneading, rolling and gliding over muscles and other soft tissues. In veterinary practice, the treatment is adapted to the animal’s diagnosis, pain level, age, tissue condition and tolerance. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) describes Tui-na as a manual therapy and massage guided by TCVM theory.

It is best understood as an adjunct: a possible addition to a veterinary treatment plan, not a replacement for diagnostic work, pain relief, surgery, physical rehabilitation or treatment of an underlying disease. Manual therapy cannot determine why a dog is lame, weak or painful. A veterinarian should examine the dog before anyone performs therapeutic techniques, particularly when signs are new, severe or worsening.

The four key applications

1. Osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain

The clearest direct canine evidence concerns osteoarthritis (OA). A 2021 randomized clinical trial enrolled 47 dogs with radiographic OA that were already receiving conventional medication. Twenty-three dogs received weekly Tui-na for five weeks while continuing their medication; 24 dogs served as controls. The investigators reported greater improvement in the Tui-na group in range of motion, walking frequency and duration, quality-of-life measures, pain scores and weakness scores.

That result supports considering Tui-na as a complementary option for a dog whose OA plan is already established. It does not show that Tui-na replaces analgesics, slows joint degeneration, works for every arthritic dog or remains effective after the five-week treatment period. The trial was small, and the treatment was combined with medication rather than tested as a stand-alone therapy.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis illustrates why the result needs careful wording. It included 10 experimental animal-model studies and 18 human clinical studies, but its authors reported that published clinical studies directly assessing Tui-na efficacy for canine OA were lacking at the time of their review. The later randomized trial supplies direct canine clinical evidence, yet the overall evidence base remains limited. A veterinarian should therefore define measurable goals—such as easier rising, longer comfortable walks or improved joint range—and reassess whether the dog is actually benefiting.

2. Recovery support after a selected soft-tissue injury

Tui-na may be included in rehabilitation after a veterinarian has diagnosed an appropriate soft-tissue problem and ruled out fractures, dislocations, major tendon damage and other conditions requiring different treatment. The published canine example is a 2023 case report involving a nine-month-old Great Dane with acute shoulder lameness after a fall.

In that report, Tui-na was delivered alongside dry-needle acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The dog reportedly began using the leg the day after the first session and was walking and running without observed lameness after two weeks. This is encouraging as a description of one multimodal case, but it cannot establish that Tui-na caused the recovery. There was no untreated comparison, and the simultaneous therapies make the individual contribution of each treatment impossible to determine.

For a dog with an injury, hands-on treatment should follow—not precede—diagnosis and an activity plan. Early sessions may be brief and gentle, with the practitioner avoiding the injured structure when direct pressure could aggravate inflammation. Progress should be judged by veterinary rechecks, gait or function, pain behavior and adherence to prescribed rest or strengthening, rather than by a single apparently improved walk.

3. Gentle mobility and stiffness support in older dogs

AAHA’s integrative-care overview identifies Tui-na as a possible supportive therapy for geriatric patients showing signs such as weakness and stiffness. In this context, the goal is comfort and functional mobility: helping an older dog tolerate handling, transition between positions or participate in a broader low-impact exercise plan.

Professional guidance is not the same as controlled proof. The sources reviewed do not establish how much Tui-na improves mobility in older dogs, which techniques are best for particular age-related diseases or how long any benefit lasts. Older dogs may also have undiagnosed heart disease, kidney disease, fragile skin, osteoporosis, tumors or painful spinal conditions. Their sessions may need to be shorter and gentler than those for a healthy adult dog.

AAHA notes that some techniques may be taught to owners. Home care should be individualized: a veterinarian or appropriately trained professional should demonstrate where to work, how much pressure to use, how long to continue and which signs mean “stop.” Owners should not copy a generic online massage routine onto a dog with an unassessed lump, swollen joint, back pain or sudden weakness.

4. Selected neurological or disc-related rehabilitation contexts

Tui-na appears in veterinary educational material alongside neurological and musculoskeletal care. Chi University’s veterinary Tui-na course lists neurological disharmonies and musculoskeletal disorders in small animals among its training topics. This documents a professional application, not proof that Tui-na treats disc disease, paralysis, nerve injury or other neurological diagnoses.

For a dog recovering from a neurological event, Tui-na might be considered one component of a veterinarian-led integrative rehabilitation plan after the diagnosis and stability of the spine or nervous system are established. It should never delay imaging, emergency care, surgery, corticosteroid decisions, bladder management, assisted mobility or conventional rehabilitation when those are indicated. The sources reviewed provide no controlled canine evidence establishing a Tui-na-specific benefit for disc disease or paralysis, so claims should remain limited to possible supportive use.

How the evidence compares

Application What the cited material shows How to describe the evidence Appropriate role
Osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain 2021 randomized trial: 47 dogs; weekly Tui-na for five weeks plus ongoing medication versus 24 controls Direct canine clinical evidence, but small and short-term Adjunct to a diagnosed OA plan with tracked outcomes
Acute soft-tissue injury 2023 report of one young Great Dane treated with Tui-na, acupuncture and herbs Single multimodal case; causation and generalizability are unknown Possible rehabilitation support after diagnosis and activity guidance
Geriatric stiffness or weakness AAHA describes supportive use and possible owner instruction Professional guidance; controlled canine efficacy is not established Gentle, individualized comfort and mobility support
Neurological or disc-related rehabilitation Veterinary course material includes neurological and musculoskeletal topics Training application, not controlled evidence of disease treatment Only as part of a veterinarian-led integrative rehabilitation plan

The 2022 systematic review’s 10 animal-model studies and 18 human clinical studies are useful context but cannot be treated as equivalent to trials in client-owned dogs. Animal models may not reproduce canine OA, and human outcomes do not establish the right technique, dose or safety profile for dogs.

What a responsible Tui-na visit looks like

  1. Veterinary assessment: The veterinarian takes a history and performs a physical and orthopedic or neurological examination. Depending on the signs, diagnostics may include radiographs, laboratory tests or advanced imaging.
  2. Define the treatment objective: Agree on a specific outcome, such as easier standing, a measured increase in comfortable walking time or less guarding during handling. Decide which conventional treatments continue.
  3. Screen for contraindications: Review wounds, infection, inflammation, tumors, thrombosis, recent surgery, bleeding risk, severe systemic illness and any unstable orthopedic or neurological condition.
  4. Choose a qualified practitioner: Ask about veterinary training, supervision, communication with the primary veterinarian and experience with the dog’s diagnosis. A practitioner should be willing to stop when the dog shows pain, fear or fatigue.
  5. Start conservatively: The first session should use pressure, duration and body regions appropriate to the individual dog. Fragile or seriously ill patients generally require briefer, gentler handling.
  6. Monitor between sessions: Record gait, willingness to rise, stair use, walk duration, sleep, appetite and pain behaviors. Note delayed soreness, swelling, bruising or worsening neurological signs.
  7. Reassess and change course: At a scheduled veterinary review, compare the measures with the agreed goal. Continue only if the benefit is meaningful and risks remain acceptable; investigate a new or worsening sign rather than intensifying massage.

When Tui-na should be avoided or modified

Merck Veterinary Manual’s “Manual Therapy in Veterinary Patients,” updated March 2026, cautions against applying soft-tissue techniques directly over:

  • infection or acute inflammation;
  • tumors;
  • recent surgical sites; and
  • thromboses.

Merck also advises shorter, gentler treatment for especially fragile or ill patients. Excessive pressure can injure organs, blood vessels, nerves or bones. A dog with severe pain, collapse, breathing difficulty, sudden paralysis, inability to urinate, rapidly increasing swelling or a suspected fracture needs prompt veterinary care, not massage.

Tell the veterinarian about anticoagulants, bleeding disorders, cancer, recent procedures, skin disease and all medications. Do not massage over an unexplained lump, a hot swollen joint, an open wound or an area the dog protects. Stop immediately if the dog pants excessively, attempts to bite, cries, becomes distressed, develops weakness or appears worse afterward.

Tui-na, massage and chiropractic care are not interchangeable

Merck groups massage and chiropractic therapy under manual therapy but treats them as different interventions. Tui-na is primarily a soft-tissue and manual technique guided by TCVM concepts. Chiropractic treatment involves joint or spinal manipulation and should not be presented as the same service. A gentle massage session also does not authorize forceful spinal twisting or “realignment.” Ask exactly which techniques will be used, who will perform them and how the plan fits the diagnosis.

How to judge whether it is helping

Use observable, repeatable measures rather than traditional-theory claims alone. For an arthritic dog, record the time needed to stand, number of comfortable walks, willingness to climb a step and a simple daily pain or mobility score. For an injury, follow the prescribed leash restriction and note weight-bearing and gait at the same pace. For an older or neurologically affected dog, track transfers, slipping, paw placement and fatigue.

Improvement immediately after handling may reflect relaxation or temporary changes in muscle tone. It does not prove healing of a joint, tendon, disc or nerve. A sustained benefit should be demonstrated across days or weeks and confirmed against the veterinarian’s examination.

Professional learning resources

Application of Tui-Na in Veterinary Medicine, third edition (ISBN 9781934786086), is listed as a 2024, 206-page professional reference covering veterinary Tui-na methods, protocols and animal case reports. Chi University lists it as a required textbook for its veterinary Tui-na course. It is written for veterinary practitioners and should not be treated as a consumer self-treatment manual.

Chi University’s course material includes small-animal musculoskeletal and neurological topics and states that certification requires the applicant to be a veterinarian. Course enrollment, prerequisites and partner arrangements can change, so practitioners should confirm current details directly with the institution.

What owners should take away

Tui-na has its strongest canine support as an adjunct for osteoarthritis in one small randomized trial, not as a medication replacement. A single multimodal case suggests possible use during soft-tissue recovery, while AAHA guidance supports cautious geriatric use and professional training materials describe neurological applications without establishing disease-specific efficacy. Veterinary diagnosis, contraindication screening, gentle technique and measurable follow-up are essential to keep the treatment useful and safe.
