No two tuxedo cats look exactly alike because the white areas come from white spotting, which varies in how much white appears and where it sits, and because the finished coat is shaped by several inherited traits working together. Feline genetics explains that range well, but it does not let anyone predict the exact position of each white patch.
What “tuxedo” actually means
The Tuxedo label describes a familiar look: a cat that is mostly black with white markings, often on the chest, paws, and face. The Traditional Cat Association (TICA) notes that solid black-and-white cats are often called “Tux,” but it stresses that this is not a breed or an official color name. A cat described as a tuxedo may be a mixed-breed domestic cat or a pedigreed cat, and the nickname says nothing about its ancestry.
Because the term is informal, two cats called tuxedos can differ in ways the label does not capture. The nickname points to a broad visual pattern. It does not fix the size, shape, or placement of the white.
Why the white areas vary
White spotting is a range, not a fixed design
TICA describes white markings as varying substantially in both amount and location. It uses pattern labels such as mitted, bi-color, and van to describe different distributions of white. These labels help organize the range of appearances, but they are not a promise that every black-and-white cat fits one exact standardized form. A cat with a small white bib and a cat with white on the belly, legs, and part of the face can both be called tuxedos while looking quite different.

TICA’s educational material uses a figurative line, that each coat is “painted” individually “so no two are ever exactly alike.” It is a metaphor on the association’s page, not a scientific statement from a named researcher, but it captures the practical point: variation is the normal state of white spotting.
One gene involved in white spotting
A 2014 study in the journal G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics linked a feline endogenous retrovirus insertion in the KIT gene to dominant-white and white-spotting phenotypes. This is the primary genetic finding behind the white patterns discussed here. It explains part of how white spotting is inherited, but white spotting should not be treated as the only gene affecting the whole coat. A 2014 finding describes one piece of the system, not the full set of factors that set a particular cat’s markings.

Other genes shape the finished coat
The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory lists several coat-color effects that change how a coat looks, including agouti, dilution, and colorpoint restriction. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describes coat color and pattern as controlled by multiple loci that affect pigment, its distribution, and pattern. In practical terms, white spotting decides where pigment is absent, while other genes determine the underlying black, how dense the pigment is, and whether tabby markings show through the dark areas. A tuxedo with faint tabby striping on its legs and a solid-looking tuxedo may share the same white pattern yet look very different.
A veterinarian-written overview from Zoetis treats white spotting and other coat traits in the same general way, as secondary context for these primary sources.

How to compare two tuxedo cats
If you are looking at two cats and asking why they differ, check these features in order:
- Amount of white: how much of the body is white, from a small chest patch to a large portion of the coat.
- Placement of white: chest, paws, face, belly, or back, and whether the patches are symmetrical.
- Underlying dark color: whether the dark areas read as solid black or as a different shade that can be affected by dilution or other coat factors.
- Tabby markings: whether striping or swirls appear in the dark areas or on the white.
Two cats that differ on any of these points can both still be described as tuxedos.

What inheritance can and cannot tell you
CFA states the inheritance rule plainly: “A kitten with white spotting (calico, black and white, blue mitted, red bicolor, etc.) must have a parent with white spotting.” The rule is useful. If a kitten has white spotting, one of its parents should show the trait too, which is a clue to what is inherited.
The rule does not go further. It cannot tell you how large a kitten’s white patches will be, where they will sit, or how the kitten’s tabby markings will combine with its white. Two black-and-white parents can produce kittens whose white looks different from each other, and a parent’s visible coat is a clue to inherited traits rather than a forecast of exact markings.

What is not established
The sources reviewed for this article establish that white spotting varies and that several genes contribute to the finished coat. They do not establish a complete developmental mechanism for why a particular patch lands in a particular spot. Popular explanations, such as the idea that white patches form from a random “ink spill” or depend on exactly when during development a cell changes, are not supported by the evidence cited here, so they should be treated as speculation rather than settled science.
The honest answer to “why does my tuxedo look different from yours?” is therefore a combination: the nickname covers a broad pattern, the white is controlled by a gene that varies in expression, other coat genes change the dark areas, and the exact placement of each patch is not something current feline genetics can predict for an individual cat.
For further reading on feline genetics, the Cat Fanciers’ Association recommends the book Meow: A Genetic Concert for Cats. It covers feline genetics broadly rather than tuxedo cats specifically.
