A primordial pouch is a loose, mobile fold of skin and tissue along a cat’s lower abdomen, often most noticeable near the hind legs. It is normal anatomy, but its size varies, and it does not by itself show whether a cat is overweight. Its exact purpose is unknown; proposed explanations include protection, flexibility and room for the abdomen to expand.
What is that flap hanging under my cat’s belly?
The primordial pouch is a soft, loose fold on the underside of a cat. It may sway as a cat walks or runs, and it can contain some fat. But it is a localized feature, not a dependable measure of how much body fat a cat has overall. A pouch can be more or less noticeable from one cat to another.
The pouch often becomes more apparent as cats mature. Veterinary and animal-welfare sources describe it as appearing around six months to a year of age, but that timing is approximate; it is not a deadline or a guarantee that every cat will develop a prominent fold. VCA Animal Hospitals, Cats Protection and PetMD describe variation in how visible it is.
Why do cats have a primordial pouch?
No single function has been established. Protection of the abdomen, added flexibility when a cat stretches or moves, and room for the abdomen to expand are all suggested explanations. Some sources also mention energy storage or heat regulation, while an evolutionary remnant has been proposed. These are hypotheses, not proven reasons that cats have the fold.

As PetMD quotes veterinarian Nicole Savageau of The Vets: “It could be an evolutionary relic trait left over from wild ancestors.” That is one possible explanation, not a settled account of the pouch’s purpose.
Is my cat’s primordial pouch normal, or is my cat overweight?
A saggy belly alone cannot answer that. The pouch is typically a loose fold concentrated low on the abdomen; excess weight is assessed across the whole body. At home, look at your cat’s outline from above and gently feel the ribs. A visible waist and ribs that can be felt without much pressure are useful body-condition cues. A rounder outline, a less defined waist and ribs that are difficult to feel may suggest excess weight, but these observations are not a diagnosis.

These are screening observations, not a substitute for a veterinary body-condition assessment. If you are unsure whether your cat is at a healthy weight, ask your veterinarian rather than relying on the pouch’s appearance.
Does neutering cause a primordial pouch?
No. Cats Protection notes that the pouch is not exclusive to neutered cats. Neutering can change a cat’s energy needs, so a cat may need less food afterward; if intake is not adjusted, weight gain may make the abdomen look fuller. That is different from saying neutering creates the pouch.

When should I ask a veterinarian about my cat’s belly?
Get veterinary advice if your cat’s body changes, the abdomen becomes particularly large or saggy, or you cannot tell whether a change is ordinary variation or a weight concern. Do not assume every enlarged belly is a primordial pouch. If an unneutered female may be pregnant, contact a veterinarian for advice rather than pressing or handling her abdomen to check.
The pouch itself is common normal anatomy; a new or notable change in the belly deserves attention on its own terms.
