Two Camillo men pleaded guilty to illegally using a set net to catch crabs in the Peel-Harvey Estuary, while a separate Falcon case ended with a man convicted of possessing marron out of season. A 2024 report said 40 of the 44 crabs caught in the net were undersized; both men were fined $3,275, and the Falcon man was fined $2,300.

What happened in the Peel-Harvey Estuary?

Fisheries and marine officers reportedly saw Salimoni Ralulu and Timoci Buliciri Waqanivavalagi, both from Camillo, using and retrieving a set net at Falcon. After the men brought the net to their car, officers stopped them. The net contained 44 crabs, including 40 that were undersized, and an undersized tarwhine. The catch was released into the estuary. The two men pleaded guilty in Mandurah Magistrates Court, according to PerthNow’s 23 August 2024 report for the Mandurah Times.

What fishing rules did the report describe?

The 2024 report said set nets in the Peel-Harvey Estuary could be used only on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. until midnight, during the period from 1 November through 31 July the following year. It also said set nets must not be used to take blue swimmer crabs and that any crab caught in a set net must be released immediately. These are the report’s account of the rules in 2024, not confirmation of current regulations.

Methods named for catching blue swimmer crabs

The report quoted Todd A’Vard, then DPIRD director regional compliance metro, as saying blue swimmer crabs may be taken only by hand, non-piercing wire hooks, wire scoop nets or drop nets. Because rules can change and may depend on location or conditions, check current official Western Australian fisheries guidance before fishing.

Fish traps and set nets

A’Vard said fish traps were prohibited in WA because they could catch aquatic animals indiscriminately, including protected species. He also said recreational set-net use had to be managed to limit excessive catches and protect fish stocks, and that nets had to be constantly attended and cleared of fish each hour. These statements are attributed to the official quoted in the 2024 report; consult current official guidance for present-day requirements.
