Purina Pro Plan is a broad range of cat foods, not a single product. Cats.com’s review, written by Mallory Crusta and last updated February 4, 2026, rates the brand 5.8 out of 10 (36 of 60 points, grade C+). That rating is the reviewer’s own judgment, not a veterinary consensus or a controlled comparison. It is useful for seeing where criticisms cluster, but it cannot tell you whether a specific Pro Plan formula suits your cat. That depends on the exact recipe, its nutritional adequacy statement for your cat’s life stage, its calorie and moisture content, and how your cat actually does on it.
What the Cats.com score measures
The review scores the brand on six named dimensions. Its category scores are shown below.

The six category scores add up to 36 of 60, but a simple average of those six numbers is 6.0, not 5.8. The page publishes 5.8 and the C+ grade, so the overall figure reflects a method that the summary does not reproduce. Read the grade as one reviewer’s weighting. The highest category is customer experience (8); the lowest are ingredient quality, price, and recall history (each 5).
Which recipes the review actually analyzes
The review’s ingredient critiques and nutrient figures attach to named recipes, not to the whole range. It discusses a dry chicken-and-rice recipe and a wet chicken-and-turkey entrée, and the two have very different labels.

These numbers cannot be compared directly, because a wet food is mostly water. Converted to a dry-matter basis (100 minus moisture), the protein works out to roughly 45% for the dry recipe (40 ÷ 88) and roughly 50% for the wet recipe (10 ÷ 20). That conversion is our own arithmetic from the figures above. It is the fair way to compare a dry and a wet food, and it is also why the wet and dry Pro Plan recipes should be judged separately.
Ingredient criticisms are recipe-specific
The review faults some recipes for ingredients such as wheat gluten, corn-derived ingredients, and added colors. It also notes animal ingredients and, in one dry formula, an added probiotic. Three points keep these observations in proportion:

- Each criticism applies to the recipe it names, not to every Pro Plan product.
- Ingredient order on a label and the presence of a given ingredient do not, on their own, establish clinical harm or overall suitability.
- Whether an ingredient matters depends on your cat’s tolerance and on your own preferences, which the label alone cannot settle.
For example, Purina’s official listing for Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Chicken & Rice dry food names chicken, rice, corn protein meal, poultry by-product meal, and wheat flour among its ingredients. Anyone who wants to avoid corn or wheat should check the exact formula on the bag rather than rely on the brand-level critique.
What the complete-and-balanced statement means
Purina’s product page for Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Chicken & Rice states: “Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Chicken & Rice Formula provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance of adult cats.” This is the manufacturer’s statement about one named formula. It is not an independent test result, and it does not extend to other Pro Plan recipes.

The wording matters. AAFCO adequacy statements can rest on a formulation calculation or on feeding trials, and this one specifies feeding trials for adult maintenance. A statement for adult maintenance does not cover kittens, pregnant or nursing cats, or cats with a medical condition unless the package says so. Check the life-stage line on the bag you actually buy.
The LiveClear allergen claim
Purina’s current adult cat-food page says that LiveClear reduces the major allergen in cat hair and dander by an average of 47%, starting in the third week of daily feeding. This is a manufacturer claim, and it applies only to LiveClear foods. It is an average, not a guarantee for any individual cat or household. We have not independently checked the study behind the figure. The claim concerns allergen levels in the cat’s coat and dander, and it does not predict how any person’s symptoms will change.

Recall history: what is and is not established
The Cats.com review reports that tubs of Purina Pro Plan wet dog food were recalled in 2016 because vitamin and mineral levels were inadequate. That recall concerned dog food, not a cat formula. We could not establish a complete, independently verified record of cat-food recalls for Pro Plan through October 2026, so the review’s recall score should not be read as a full present-day chronology. Before buying, check the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s pet food recall listings and Purina’s own notices, and note the lot number on the bag you purchase.

- Record the exact product name from the bag and find the matching page on Purina’s website. Confirm that the recipe, protein, and format match.
- Confirm the life-stage statement (adult maintenance, all life stages, or growth). Pro Plan’s adult statement above applies only to adult maintenance.
- Read the guaranteed analysis: crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture. For a wet-versus-dry comparison, convert to a dry-matter basis (100 minus moisture) first.
- Compare calories, not only percentages. Use the calorie figure on the label or product page, then compare energy per kilogram or per can or cup.
- Calculate cost per day: divide the package price by the number of days the feeding guide says the bag will last for your cat’s weight. The review’s price score of 5 out of 10 is a judgment; your own calculation is the figure that matters for your budget.
- Switch foods gradually over roughly a week or longer, mixing increasing amounts of the new food into the old.
- Track appetite, stool quality, vomiting, weight, and coat over several weeks. Ask your veterinarian before changing food for a kitten, a senior cat, a pregnant or nursing cat, or a cat with a medical condition.
Using this process, a Pro Plan formula can be judged on its own terms: what it contains, what Purina states about it, what it costs per day, and how your cat responds.
