Elasmotherium sibiricum, commonly called the Siberian unicorn, was an extinct rhinoceros: a several-tonne grazer with a huge skull, a low-slung head and a body that probably looked more like an oversized shaggy rhino than anything from a fantasy illustration.
It also lived much more recently than once thought. The last Siberian unicorns survived until roughly 39,000 years ago, and possibly as late as 36,000–35,000 years ago. Anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals were alive at the same time.
What was the Siberian unicorn?
The Siberian unicorn was a species of prehistoric rhinoceros, Elasmotherium sibiricum. Its fossils have been found across the Eurasian grasslands, including parts of present-day southwestern Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Mongolia and northern China. “Siberian unicorn” is simply a popular nickname; the animal did not live only in Siberia.
It belonged to the elasmotheriine branch of the rhinoceros family, which split from the lineage of living rhinos roughly 43 million years ago. At up to about 3.5 tonnes, it was considerably larger and heavier than most modern rhinoceroses.

The famous giant horn is not proven
Most illustrations show a single enormous horn rising from the centre of the animal’s forehead. That image comes from its unusually large bony frontal dome on the skull. But no complete horn from Elasmotherium has been found.
Rhinoceros horns are made of keratin, the same general material found in human hair and fingernails, rather than bone. Keratin usually does not fossilize well. As a result, scientists cannot directly measure the Siberian unicorn’s supposed horn or confirm that it had the two-metre-long structure shown in popular reconstructions.
A 2021 anatomical study argued that the walls of the frontal dome were relatively thin and unlikely to have supported such a massive horn. The researchers proposed that the dome may instead have been covered by a smaller keratinized structure. They also suggested that a pad or small horn-like feature at the tip of the muzzle may have helped the animal disturb soil while feeding.
That study did not prove the animal was completely hornless. The careful conclusion is that the skull had a huge forehead dome that may have supported a keratinous covering, while the traditional gigantic horn remains unconfirmed.

It probably looked like a very large, shaggy rhino
The familiar fantasy unicorn has a slim horse-like body, a lifted head and elegant legs. Elasmotherium was likely much less graceful. Reconstructions generally show a heavily built animal with a powerful neck, a low-held head and a pronounced shoulder or back hump. It may have had a thick or woolly coat, particularly in the cold steppe environments where it lived, although the exact appearance of its coat and face cannot be known with certainty.
Its skull and neck indicate strong muscles capable of powerful downward and sideways movements. Those movements fit an animal built for feeding and pushing through vegetation—not a light-footed forest creature. The animal may have looked imposing even without a giant horn: a broad, muscular rhinoceros several times heavier than a typical domestic horse.
A specialist grass-eater
The Siberian unicorn appears to have been adapted for open, grass-dominated habitats. Its teeth were unusually high-crowned, a useful feature for processing abrasive food. Plant and dental evidence indicates that it ate tough grasses, possibly almost exclusively.
That specialization may have helped it thrive while extensive grasslands were available, but it also created a weakness when the environment changed. The 2021 skull study suggested that the muzzle and a small keratinized pad could have been used to rake through soil for roots, tubers or other underground plant material. This is a plausible anatomical reconstruction, not behaviour directly recorded by a fossil.

Humans saw it—but may not have caused its extinction
For many years, scientists thought Elasmotherium had disappeared around 200,000 years ago. Radiocarbon dating of 23 specimens produced a much later picture, placing its survival at least until about 39,000 years ago. Some estimates put its final survival around 36,000–35,000 years ago.
That timing places it alongside both modern humans and Neanderthals. However, researchers have not found archaeological evidence directly showing that humans hunted or killed Siberian unicorns. Living at the same time does not establish that one species caused the other’s extinction.
Why did the Siberian unicorn disappear?
Climate and habitat change are the leading explanations. The extinction seems to have happened before the coldest part of the last Ice Age, rather than during the later period often associated with the disappearance of woolly mammoths. Changing conditions probably reduced or fragmented the grasslands on which this specialized grazer depended.
Its narrow diet may have made it less flexible than animals able to switch between grasses, herbs, shrubs and other foods. A restricted range and small or declining populations could have increased its vulnerability as well. The available evidence does not identify one single, proven cause, so claims that humans definitely hunted it to extinction go beyond what the fossils show.

What the “real unicorn” tells us
The Siberian unicorn is a good reminder that fossil reconstructions contain different levels of certainty. The animal itself is well supported: it was a giant extinct rhinoceros, lived across Eurasian steppe, ate abrasive vegetation and survived into the period of human prehistory. Its exact coat, facial tissues and horn are less certain.
So, were unicorns real? In the broadest sense, yes: a real rhinoceros inspired the name. But there is no evidence for a beautiful horse-like animal with a confirmed two-metre forehead horn. The most defensible mental image is a massive, possibly shaggy grassland rhino with an extraordinary skull—and perhaps a much smaller keratinous structure than the legend suggests.

Did the Siberian unicorn have a two-metre horn?
There is no complete fossil horn to confirm that. The giant horn was inferred from the animal’s large forehead dome, and later anatomical work has questioned whether it could have supported such a structure.
How big was the Siberian unicorn?
It could weigh up to roughly 3.5 tonnes, making it a massive rhinoceros and much heavier than a domestic horse.
Did humans hunt the Siberian unicorn to extinction?
There is currently no archaeological evidence directly linking humans to its killing. Climate-driven loss and fragmentation of grassland, combined with its specialized diet and possibly small populations, are leading explanations.
The Bottom Line
The real unicorn was Elasmotherium sibiricum, a giant extinct rhinoceros that lived across Eurasia until roughly 39,000 years ago. It may have had a keratinous structure on its forehead, but the famous two-metre horn has never been found. Picture a huge, possibly woolly grass-eater—not a pretty white horse.
