If your cat is throwing up foam, judge the situation by your cat’s condition and what they may have swallowed—not by the foam’s color. Trouble breathing, seizures, collapse or unresponsiveness, unconsciousness, or bleeding warrant an immediate trip to an emergency veterinary hospital. Repeated vomiting, signs of illness, or possible poisoning call for prompt veterinary advice.
What white foam can mean
White foam may consist of stomach acid and mucus. It can appear when a cat’s stomach is empty or irritated, but its appearance cannot identify the cause or show whether the situation is harmless. Vomiting can also occur with poisoning and other conditions. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine includes vomiting among possible signs of poisoning, so do not use the color of the vomit to rule out a serious problem.
When to get veterinary help
Go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately
Take your cat to an emergency hospital if they are having trouble breathing, having seizures, bleeding, unconscious, or not responding. The ASPCA advises immediate veterinary-hospital care for these signs.
Call a veterinarian promptly
Contact your veterinarian if vomiting repeats, your cat seems unwell, or you are unsure how serious the situation is. The available guidance does not establish one episode-count threshold that applies to every cat, so do not wait for a particular number of episodes if your cat’s condition concerns you.

If it was one episode and your cat seems normal
Ask your cat’s veterinarian for advice specific to the circumstances, and watch for another episode or any new signs. The sources do not establish a universally safe number of hours to wait, so an isolated episode does not guarantee that home observation is appropriate.
If your cat may have swallowed something hazardous
Call a veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service promptly—even if your cat has no symptoms or only mild signs. ASPCA and Cornell advise contacting a veterinary professional for suspected poisoning rather than waiting for signs to worsen.

- Call for professional guidance. In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 and says it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661, with 24/7 availability and an incident fee. Check each service’s current contact and fee details when calling.
- Keep the product information handy. Have the suspected product’s container or label available so the professional can identify what your cat may have encountered.
- Do not try to treat the exposure yourself. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote unless a veterinary professional or poison-control expert directs you. Some poisons can cause greater harm if vomited. If packaging was swallowed, mention that too; it may cause an obstruction and require medical attention.
