The most useful Valentine’s Day safety steps are simple: meet a new date in a public place and tell someone you trust where you will be, never send money to someone you know only online or by phone, arrange your ride home before you drink, ask about allergies before you order or share food, and keep candles, flowers, alcohol, and wrapping materials out of reach of pets and children. None of these steps guarantees safety, but each one reduces risk and gives you more control over your evening.
Stay safer on a first date
RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, recommends a short set of habits for meeting someone new. None of them is a guarantee, but together they keep your options open.
- Tell a trusted person your plans. Share who you are meeting, where, and when you expect to be back or to check in.
- Choose a populated, well-lit public place. A busy restaurant or café for the first meeting is a better choice than a private home or a quiet spot.
- Control your own transportation. Drive yourself or arrange your own ride so you can leave whenever you choose.
- Limit alcohol and watch your drink. Avoid excessive drinking and do not leave food or drinks unattended.
- Leave if you feel uncomfortable. You do not need a reason to end a date that makes you uneasy.
Spot a romance scam
The FBI warns that romance scammers often build trust online over days or weeks before they ask for money. Its Philadelphia office issued a Valentine’s Day advisory dated February 3, 2026, with a message from Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs: “Don’t just follow your heart—trust your gut when seeking companionship online.”
Red flags to watch for
- Requests for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or personal information, especially early in the relationship.
- Pressure to move the conversation off the dating platform quickly.
- A profile whose photos or personal details do not hold up when you search for them.
- Urgency: a sudden emergency, a travel problem, or a business setback that needs your money right away.
What to do
- Take the relationship slowly and search the profile photos and details yourself.
- Do not send funds to anyone you know only online or by phone, however sincere the story sounds.
- If you suspect fraud, stop contact and report it to IC3, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
- If you have already sent money, contact your bank promptly. Speed matters when trying to stop a transfer.
Plan a sober ride before the evening starts
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises deciding how everyone will get home before the first drink. Options include a sober designated driver, a taxi, a rideshare, or public transportation. Choose the option that fits your location and that you can count on at the time you leave.

NHTSA’s campaign line is “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.” Two figures from NHTSA illustrate the scale of the problem, and both are 2018 data, not current totals:
- 10,511 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes involving drunk drivers in 2018, according to NHTSA.
- In 2018, the rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was 3.4 times higher at night than during the day, according to NHTSA.

Plan a date with someone who has food allergies
Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) notes that allergens can show up in places people do not expect. Drinks and garnishes can contain allergens, separate orders can be mixed up, and shared utensils or double dipping can transfer food between plates. Keep the following in mind when you plan the meal.
- Ask, do not assume. Ask the person with the allergy which precautions work for them.
- Ask how your order affects theirs. Shared dishes, fryers, and prep surfaces can carry allergens even when no ingredient is listed.
- Use clean utensils. Do not share a fork or spoon, and do not double dip.
- Know where prescribed epinephrine is kept. Find out where the person keeps it and how they want others to respond in an emergency.
- Respect their comfort. Follow their preferences about affection after eating or drinking, including whether they want a kiss or a hug when a food or drink may still be on your mouth.

- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Blow it out when you leave the room.
- Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, including curtains, paper decorations, and greeting cards.
- Consider flameless LED candles as a safer option for tables and mantels, especially if children or pets are at home.
Keep takeout packaging, cooking towels, and oven mitts away from flame and heat. Stay with the stove while cooking. If a grease fire starts, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the heat. Do not put water on a grease fire. Before you go to sleep, clear combustibles from the fireplace and make sure the fire is fully out.

Flowers and cats
The ASPCA warns that all lily species can be potentially fatal to cats, so lilies should not enter a home with a cat. Rose thorns can also harm pets. If you are unsure whether a flower is safe for your animal, check with a veterinarian or a reliable poison-control resource before you bring it home.
Gifts and wrapping
- When buying gifts for children, follow the age guidance and choking warnings on the package.
- After unwrapping, discard plastic wrapping and ribbons promptly, before a pet or child can get to them.
- Keep alcohol, candles, and balloons out of pets’ reach.
If you think a pet has eaten something
Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control right away if you suspect ingestion. Do not wait to see whether symptoms appear, and have the product or plant name ready when you call.
