Vectra for Cats & Kittens is a topical flea product labeled only for cats and kittens. For the US product, the manufacturer, Vectra Pet US/Ceva Animal Health, says it is for cats and kittens at least 2 pounds and over 8 weeks old, and it should be applied no more than once in any 30-day period. The most commonly reported effects are temporary redness, scratching, or itching where the product was applied, and vomiting or diarrhea. Dosing, strength, and directions vary by country, so the label on your cat’s package is the final authority.
What Vectra for Cats & Kittens contains
The active ingredients are dinotefuran and pyriproxyfen. Dinotefuran is an insecticide, and pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator that disrupts flea development. The two ingredients are listed in the same way across the records reviewed, but the strengths and package details differ by jurisdiction, as the table below shows.
| Source | Product named | Date or status | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vectra Pet US/Ceva Animal Health, US product FAQ | Vectra for Cats & Kittens | Current manufacturer information, checked October 2026 | Eligibility (at least 2 lb and over 8 weeks), once-per-30-days interval, active ingredients, application steps, reported side effects |
| US EPA-hosted master label for the cat product | Vectra cat product (formulation described in that document) | 2013 | Dinotefuran 22% and pyriproxyfen 3% for that label’s formulation; dose volumes tied to weight ranges for package variants |
| European Medicines Agency (EMA) record | Vectra Felis | Product information last updated 15 October 2025 | Dinotefuran and pyriproxyfen listed as active substances for the European Union market |
| Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) database, Great Britain | Vectra Felis 423 mg/42.3 mg spot-on solution for cats | Date not stated in the record consulted | Listed strength for the Great Britain authorization |
| US EPA-hosted label for a different product | Vectra Cat Plus Tick | 2017 | Veterinary consultation guidance for certain cats; this is a separate product from Vectra for Cats & Kittens |
The 2013 US percentages describe that historical label, not every package sold today. Do not assume a 22% and 3% formulation, or the 423 mg/42.3 mg strength, applies to the box in your home unless the package says so.
Who it is labeled for
The US manufacturer’s minimum eligibility is a cat or kitten weighing at least 2 pounds and aged over 8 weeks. Before the first dose, check the following:

- Age: confirm the kitten is over 8 weeks old under the US label.
- Other flea or tick treatments: if another topical flea or tick product was used within the past month, the manufacturer recommends consulting a veterinarian before applying Vectra.
If your cat falls outside these limits, or you are unsure of its weight or age, ask a veterinarian before using the product.
How to apply it
The manufacturer’s directions are as follows:
- Make sure the cat is dry before treatment, and keep it dry for 24 hours afterward.
- Choose the dose that matches the cat’s weight band on the package.
- Part the hair at the base of the head so the skin is exposed.
- Apply the entire tube at the base of the head, directly onto the skin.
- Avoid the cat’s eyes and mouth.
How often to apply
Apply no more than once in any 30-day period. The manufacturer’s FAQ addresses this directly: applying the product more often than once a month is not part of the label directions. If a dose is missed, do not double up. Follow the interval on the package and ask a veterinarian about any schedule questions.

Side effects and what to do
The manufacturer’s FAQ lists the following effects. This is the manufacturer’s list, not a complete catalogue of every possible reaction, and no rate for any of them is given in the information consulted.
Skin reactions at the application site
Individual sensitivity may appear as slight, temporary redness, scratching, itching, or other discomfort where the product was applied. For these signs, the manufacturer says to bathe the cat with a mild soap or shampoo and rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. Contact a veterinarian if the signs persist.

Not for dogs: the Vectra 3D warning
The manufacturer distinguishes cat and dog products and states, “DO NOT USE VECTRA® 3D ON CATS.” Check the species and product name on the package before you buy or apply, because Vectra products for dogs are not interchangeable with Vectra for Cats & Kittens.

Other Vectra cat labels
The US EPA-hosted label for Vectra Cat Plus Tick, a separate product dated 2017, advises consulting a veterinarian before use on cats that are debilitated, aged, medicated, pregnant, nursing, or known to be sensitive to pesticide products. That guidance belongs to the Cat Plus Tick label. Check whether the package you have carries the same wording, and talk to a veterinarian if your cat falls into any of these groups.
