If you use “state animals” broadly to include every animal-related emblem listed by Vermont, the total is nine: the Morgan horse, hermit thrush, brook trout, walleye pike, honeybee, northern leopard frog, monarch butterfly, painted turtle and Randall Lineback cattle.
That count is an editorial grouping, not the name of a single statute or state list. Vermont’s official manual treats these as separate categories, including two kinds of state fish and a state heritage livestock breed. The distinction matters: the Morgan horse is the state animal in the narrow legal sense, while the other eight are official symbols in their own categories.

What “nine state animals” means in Vermont
Vermont’s designations are organized by category rather than gathered under one heading called “the nine state animals.” The narrow answer to “What is Vermont’s official state animal?” is the Morgan horse. The broader answer includes the state bird, two state fish, state insect, state amphibian, state butterfly, state reptile and state heritage livestock breed.

The Morgan horse: Vermont’s state animal
Official status
The Morgan horse is the only entry carrying Vermont’s general “state animal” title. Vermont Statutes Online, Title 1, Chapter 11, §500, states: “The State Animal shall be the Morgan horse.” The statute gives the horse its narrow legal status, which is why it belongs first in any answer to the question.
Adoption year
Vermont’s official manual records the Morgan horse designation as adopted in 1961. That date belongs to the state-animal designation itself, not to the creation of the Morgan breed or to a later celebration.

Call the Morgan horse Vermont’s state animal, not Vermont’s state mammal. The official wording is specific, and it does not describe the designation as a wild-animal symbol. In a classroom list, travel caption or quiz, “Morgan horse” is the complete answer; the remaining entries are additional official animal-related emblems.
The hermit thrush: Vermont’s state bird
Official status
The hermit thrush is Vermont’s state bird. It is a separate designation from the state animal and from every other category in the manual.
Adoption year
The state-bird designation dates to 1941, making it the earliest adoption year among the nine entries listed here. The year is an official designation date, not the date of a particular bird survey.

Why it appears in the broad count
When a reader asks for Vermont’s “official state animals” in the plural, the hermit thrush is included because the state bird is an animal-related emblem. It should still be labeled “state bird” rather than folded into the legal state-animal title.

Vermont’s two state fish
Vermont uses two fish categories rather than one undifferentiated state-fish entry. Both were adopted in 1978, and Vermont statutes recognize the cold-water and warm-water distinction.
Brook trout — state cold-water fish
The brook trout is Vermont’s state cold-water fish. Its official category is important: “brook trout” is not simply a second name for a single statewide fish designation, but the entry assigned to cold water.
The manual records 1978 as the adoption year. In a list or table, retain the full category so readers can see why Vermont has two fish entries.
Walleye pike — state warm-water fish
The walleye pike is Vermont’s state warm-water fish. Like the brook trout, it was adopted in 1978. The two fish therefore share a year while representing different official categories.
Counting both fish is necessary for the broad total of nine. Counting “state fish” only once would produce a shorter list and would erase the distinction Vermont law makes between cold-water and warm-water designations.

The honeybee: Vermont’s state insect
Official status
The honeybee is Vermont’s state insect. The designation is independent of the state animal, bird and fish categories, so it contributes one entry to the broad animal-related grouping without changing the Morgan horse’s narrow title.
Adoption year
Vermont adopted the state-insect designation in 1978, the same year as both fish designations. The shared year indicates when the symbols were adopted, not that they form a combined “fish and insect” designation.
The northern leopard frog: Vermont’s state amphibian
Official status
The northern leopard frog is Vermont’s state amphibian. “Amphibian” is its own official category in the state manual, distinct from the reptile category represented by the painted turtle.

The northern leopard frog was adopted as the state amphibian in 1998. That date places the designation after the butterfly and reptile symbols and before the heritage-breed entry in the chronology.
Keeping the category clear
For an accurate caption, use “Vermont’s state amphibian” rather than calling the frog the state animal. The broader nine-entry count includes it because the list groups official animal-related emblems, while the legal title remains reserved for the Morgan horse.
The monarch butterfly: Vermont’s state butterfly
Official status
The monarch butterfly is Vermont’s state butterfly. The butterfly designation is separate from the state insect designation: Vermont lists the honeybee as the insect and the monarch as the butterfly.

Adoption year
The monarch butterfly designation was adopted in 1987. In the official category list, it follows the 1978 fish and insect entries chronologically and precedes the 1994 reptile designation.
The painted turtle: Vermont’s state reptile
Official status
The painted turtle is Vermont’s state reptile. Its category distinguishes it from the northern leopard frog, which is the state amphibian, even though both are included among the broader animal-related symbols.
Adoption year
Vermont adopted the painted turtle designation in 1994. The manual records that year for the state reptile entry.
Randall Lineback cattle: Vermont’s heritage livestock breed
Official status
Randall Lineback cattle are recognized as Vermont’s state heritage livestock breed. This is a breed designation, not a replacement for the Morgan horse’s state-animal title and not a second general state mammal category.
Adoption year
The heritage livestock-breed designation was adopted in 2005, the latest adoption year among the nine entries in the manual.
Why this entry is included
The Randall Lineback entry is included to make the broad nine-item grouping complete. Because it represents a heritage livestock breed, it should always be labeled with that category when presented alongside the state animal, bird, fish, insect, amphibian, butterfly and reptile.

Adoption timeline from 1941 to 2005
- 1941: Hermit thrush adopted as state bird.
- 1961: Morgan horse adopted as state animal.
- 1978: Brook trout adopted as state cold-water fish; walleye pike adopted as state warm-water fish; honeybee adopted as state insect.
- 1987: Monarch butterfly adopted as state butterfly.
- 1994: Painted turtle adopted as state reptile.
- 1998: Northern leopard frog adopted as state amphibian.
- 2005: Randall Lineback cattle adopted as state heritage livestock breed.
The timeline shows why the entries should not be treated as one simultaneous list. Vermont added symbols in different categories over several decades, then later recognized a heritage livestock breed.
How to answer common questions accurately
What is Vermont’s official state animal?
The Morgan horse. That is the narrow, legally defined answer under Vermont’s state-designation statute.
Why do some lists say Vermont has nine state animals?
They use “animals” as a broad label for nine official animal-related emblems. The state manual lists the categories separately, and the two fish categories plus the heritage livestock breed are what make the broad count nine.
Does Vermont have one state fish or two?
Two: brook trout for cold water and walleye pike for warm water. Both designations date to 1978.
Are adoption years the same as biological or population dates?
No. The years in the official manual mark adoption of the state designations. They do not report population size, conservation status or the age of any individual animal.
Using the list in classrooms, writing and quizzes
- Use “Morgan horse” when a prompt asks for Vermont’s state animal.
- Use the category labels when presenting the full nine-entry grouping.
- Show both fish separately and identify cold-water versus warm-water status.
- Keep Randall Lineback cattle under “state heritage livestock breed.”
- Present the adoption year next to each entry so readers do not mistake the list for a single-year designation.
Those conventions preserve the difference between Vermont’s one state animal and the wider set of official animal-related emblems. Together, the categories account for the nine names commonly requested under the broad wording “Vermont’s official state animals.”
