Recordable buttons can give a dog another way to encounter familiar words, but they do not guarantee that a dog will “talk.” Start by pairing one clear, recorded word with a predictable activity, model it calmly, and let your dog choose whether to engage.

What dog training buttons can—and cannot—show

A soundboard button plays a recorded word. Dogs can learn associations between words and what happens next. In a 2024 study, researchers tested soundboard-trained dogs’ responses to words related to outside, play, and food. In the in-person experiment with 30 family dogs, responses to play- and outside-related words were contextually appropriate whether the words came from the owner or an unfamiliar person, and whether they were spoken or played by a button. The authors concluded that pet dogs can be taught to associate recorded words with real-world outcomes. Read the PLOS ONE study.

That finding concerns dogs responding to words presented to them. It does not prove that a dog pressing a button is making a deliberate request, forming a sentence, or using human-like language. Understanding a word and pressing a button with communicative intent are separate questions. A 2026 methodological framework recommends interpreting a press as part of a larger event—taking account of the dog’s orientation, gaze, activity, surroundings, interaction history, and what happens after the press—and explicitly says it does not claim evidence of semantic communication in dogs. Read the framework.

A separate 2024 paper reported that two-button combinations in its soundboard-trained-dog dataset were non-accidental, non-random, and non-imitative. That dataset-specific result does not establish what an individual dog meant by a particular press or demonstrate language. Read the Scientific Reports paper.

How to introduce a button

1. Choose one familiar, concrete word

Begin with a word linked to an activity your dog already knows and can anticipate, such as “play” or “outside.” Use the same spoken cue and recording each time so the association is easier to recognize. The American Kennel Club’s introduction to dog buttons likewise recommends starting with an activity word. See the AKC’s button-training guidance.

2. Model the button just before the activity

When the activity is about to happen, press the matching button yourself, say the word naturally, and then do the activity. Repeat this in ordinary daily routines, patiently and without turning the button into a required trick. The goal is to make a reliable connection between the word and the event—not to make the dog press on cue.

3. Make access easy, but leave the choice to your dog

Place the button where your dog can comfortably reach and press it. Keep the board stable and arrange buttons with your individual dog’s size and movement in mind. Let the dog approach or ignore it; non-use is acceptable. Avoid pushing a paw onto a button, repeatedly prompting, or withholding a familiar activity to force a press. A 2026 framework for canine augmentative and alternative communication research emphasizes voluntary engagement and non-coercive practice.

4. Respond to presses with context in mind

Notice what was happening before and after a press: where your dog was looking, what they were doing, whether an activity was already underway, and how they behave when you respond. If the intended activity is clear, follow through consistently. If the meaning is ambiguous, do not confidently assign one; continue attending to your dog’s body language and ordinary signals as well. Interpret the press as one part of the interaction, not a standalone sentence.

5. Keep it humane and stop if your dog disengages

Use reward-based training, keep practice relaxed, and stop if your dog appears stressed or no longer wants to participate. Do not punish a press, a mistake, or the choice not to press. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s public position recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior modification; its 2025 board clarification says its 2021 humane dog-training position remains its current authoritative statement. Read AVSAB’s position statements.

What you need—and what to look for

Recordable dog training buttons are one option, not a requirement. You can also give your dog communication opportunities through ordinary verbal cues or a bell. If you choose buttons, prioritize practical fit over claims that a particular board will make a dog communicate in a specific way.

Foam floor tiles or hook-and-loop strips can be used as optional ways to secure buttons; neither is essential. The available cited guidance does not provide controlled performance comparisons among button brands or designs, so it cannot support a ranking. The American Kennel Club describes recordable buttons and a four-pack example in its training guide.

Keep the interpretation modest

In the PLOS ONE paper, several authors disclosed consulting for FluentPet, and two authors were FluentPet employees. That commercial connection is relevant context when considering the study, alongside its specific finding: trained dogs in the experiments responded appropriately to certain presented words. It does not change the distinction between learning a word–outcome association and demonstrating that a button press carries a particular intentional message.
