A golden-coloured Bengal tiger was filmed walking through Kaziranga National Park in Assam before disappearing into vegetation. The Assam Chief Minister’s Office posted the video on January 25, 2024. The animal is a golden colour morph of a Bengal tiger—not a separate species—and the sighting does not establish how many such tigers live in the wild.
What the Kaziranga video shows
The clip shared by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office shows a golden-coloured tiger moving through the park and then vanishing into vegetation. The office posted it on X on January 25, 2024, National Tourism Day. Its accompanying post said: “Assam’s wildlife never ceases to amaze! A rare golden tiger was recently spotted in Kaziranga National Park taking a stroll. This sighting adds to the list of diverse faunal creatures found in Assam’s landscape.” (NDTV’s January 26, 2024 report, which reproduces the official post.)

The footage documents a sighting, but it does not show a census, explain the animal’s genetics or demonstrate a change in the tiger population.
When was the tiger seen, and who confirmed it?
The encounter and the public video post were on different dates. A PTI report excerpt reproduced in an NTCA newsletter says the adult male was photographed by tourist Gaurav Narayanan on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. It attributes confirmation of the sighting to Kaziranga field director Sonali Ghosh. The Chief Minister’s Office shared the video the next day, January 25; NDTV’s syndicated ANI report followed on January 26.

Is a golden tiger a different species?
No. The animal is described in the reporting as a golden morph of a Bengal tiger. “Morph” refers here to a variation in appearance; the footage and reports identify the coat colour, but do not establish the underlying genetics. It should not be described as a separate tiger species.

How many golden tigers are there?
The January 2024 video and sighting report do not establish an exact number of golden tigers in Kaziranga, India or worldwide. A tourism website has published estimates of around 30 globally and four to five in India, but it does not provide a traceable dataset to verify those figures. They should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as an official population count.
