Was WA building a luxury hotel at Perth Zoo? Not on the evidence available: at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) global summit in Perth on 10 October 2024, the Western Australian Government promoted an investment opportunity for a potential eco-lodge. Tourism WA’s prospectus said it was seeking interest for development targeted for 2029; it did not announce an approved hotel, a selected operator or a confirmed opening date. Robert Irwin spoke at the same summit, but his remarks were a separate event.
What Tourism WA proposed
Tourism WA’s investment prospectus describes a potential 50-key luxury accommodation development within Perth Zoo, overlooking the African Savannah experience. The prospectus presents it as an opportunity for investors, rather than a final hotel design or committed construction project.

Where the proposed lodge would be
The prospectus places the site inside Perth Zoo, near the Maali Function Centre, and says the accommodation could be accessible to the general public—not just zoo visitors. It describes the South Perth location as a short walk from the Swan River foreshore, with regular ferry services from Perth CBD. These are descriptions of the proposed site, not confirmation that a lodge has been built or opened.

What is known about the project’s status
The prospectus’s language is “seeking interest,” and it identifies 2029 as a potential development target. The material available does not establish whether a development partner has since been chosen, whether planning approvals have been granted, or whether construction has been scheduled. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that a hotel is guaranteed to open in 2029.
Nor does the prospectus establish a project cost, room rates, an overnight-visitor forecast or an independently assessed environmental standard. “Eco-lodge” is the opportunity’s framing; it is not evidence here of a particular certification or independently verified sustainability performance.

What Robert Irwin said at the summit
Separately, PerthNow reported that Robert Irwin spoke on 10 October 2024 at the WTTC global summit at Crown Perth, describing his appearance as the finale of the three-day event. He praised Perth’s eco-tourism efforts and discussed conservation as the purpose of zoos. PerthNow quoted him saying: “These days, in my opinion, what a zoo is, what it should be, is a place that is there for the whole sole purpose to facilitate conservation.”
On Perth, the newspaper reported him saying: “This is one of the most incredible places in the world. I mean, we all know Australia is just something else, but this spot, I mean, (this is) one of the most remote cities on earth, but they prioritise eco-tourism, so darn well, mate.” These are quotations as reported by PerthNow, not a transcript. PerthNow’s report on the summit covered both his appearance and the zoo accommodation proposal.

Perth Zoo’s visitor figures provide context, not a lodge forecast
Perth Zoo reported 804,763 visits in the year to June 2024. In its 9 August 2024 announcement, the zoo also described $51 million in Cook Government investment in its Master Plan. Those figures relate to zoo visitation and broader zoo investment; neither is a budget or demand forecast for overnight accommodation. Perth Zoo’s announcement provides that context.
