As reported on 13 March 2025, the City of Stirling suspected that at least eight mature trees had been poisoned, including a Mt Lawley sweetgum where red-tailed black cockatoos were reportedly roosting. The report described a substance that smelled like glyphosate, but did not confirm its chemical identity, identify anyone responsible, or establish that the birds were harmed.
What was reported in Mt Lawley?
PerthNow reported that the City of Stirling was seeking information about suspected poisoning affecting at least eight mature trees. At one inspected Liquidambar, also known as a sweetgum, officers found four substantial drill holes in the trunk containing a milky substance. A City spokesperson said it smelled like glyphosate; the report did not cite chemical testing confirming what it was.

The tree’s upper canopy was already declining. The City considered poisoning a likely cause, but the report did not establish a final arborist finding or definitive cause.

The report said red-tailed black cockatoos were roosting in the sweetgum when it was inspected. The City and residents were concerned about possible exposure, particularly because the birds were in their mating season and might eat nuts from the trees. It did not report that any cockatoo consumed the substance, became ill, or died.

PerthNow attributed to Perth Zoo’s conservation information website the information that red-tailed cockatoos can produce one egg a year and that loss of trees can destroy nesting sites. The report quoted the Zoo site: “Habitat destruction is also a major cause as cutting down trees destroys the cockatoos’ nesting sites.” This explains why the loss of mature trees can matter to the birds, but it is not evidence that the birds in this incident were affected.
What did the City say it would do?
As reported in March 2025, the City said it had arranged to flush the holes with water and was arranging an arborist report to assess the cause and management options. It also planned to engage local residents and put up signs seeking information. The City said it would consider prosecution if it received credible evidence. These were plans reported at that time; the article did not provide a later investigation result, arborist report, or prosecution outcome.

Why are mature trees important in Mount Lawley?
The City of Stirling describes Mount Lawley as a historic suburb whose community values its mature trees. It says it seeks to retain trees when assessing development applications, and reports that its 2025–26 budget included appointment of a Tree Protection Officer. This local context helps explain concern about damage to established trees; it does not connect any development project to the suspected poisoning.

- The substance’s chemical identity: the reported smell was not a laboratory confirmation of glyphosate.
- Whether all of the suspected trees were poisoned, and the definitive cause of the sweetgum’s canopy decline.
- Whether cockatoos consumed anything or experienced harm.
- Who caused the damage, whether an investigation reached a conclusion, and whether anyone was prosecuted.
