There is no verified account in the available record of a monarch butterfly landing in refried beans and being rescued. The closest documented match is a fictional scene in the children’s graphic novel Lowriders to the Rescue, discussed in a 2022 OPB interview. Treating that scene as a real animal-rescue report would turn fiction into misinformation.
Where the monarch-and-beans story comes from
Lowriders to the Rescue is the fourth book in the Lowriders graphic-novel series, written by Cathy Camper and illustrated by Raúl The Third. The story introduces Sokar, a monarch butterfly affected by a forest fire, and follows efforts to help her family.

During OPB’s 2022 interview about the book, host Geoff Norcross describes a food-sharing scene between Sokar and an octopus character. The dialogue includes, “Would you like some refried beans on a tortilla?” followed by, “Would you like some hummus on a pita?” The characters notice the similarity between the foods.
That exchange explains the unusual combination of a monarch butterfly and refried beans. It does not describe Sokar landing in beans, and it is not a report of a real insect being removed from food.

Here, the documented source supports a literary reference, while the claim of an actual rescue remains unverified. It also matters for animal advice. A monarch in food would be an unusual wildlife encounter, not an ordinary pet-care situation. - Look for a specific location and date. A genuine report should identify when and where the event occurred.
- Check whether the person who handled the butterfly is named and whether the account describes what happened directly.
- Separate quoted dialogue or book excerpts from descriptions of real-world events.
- Ask whether an image or clip actually shows the claimed incident, rather than an unrelated monarch or food scene.
Without those details, the claim should be labeled unverified, not reported as a confirmed rescue.
The documented fictional match
For readers interested in the source of the imagery, Lowriders to the Rescue is the relevant work: the fourth Lowriders graphic novel by Camper and Raúl The Third.
