The aquarium’s February 2024 announcement described a possible pregnancy; a May update said testing instead showed a rare reproductive disease affecting her reproductive system.
What happened to Charlotte the stingray?
On February 13, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO in Hendersonville, North Carolina, believed Charlotte, a California round stingray, was pregnant despite having no male stingray companion. The aquarium said she might have as many as four pups. A shark sharing the tank was mentioned amid speculation, but that did not mean a shark could be the father.

On May 30, the aquarium said testing showed Charlotte had developed a rare reproductive disease that had negatively affected her reproductive system. CBS reported June 1 that the aquarium said she had never been pregnant; WUNC/BPR also reported the disease update. The condition was not named in those public reports.

Could a shark get a stingray pregnant?
No. Georgia Aquarium research scientist Kady Lyons told the Associated Press that sharks and rays are not compatible in the way required to produce offspring: their reproductive anatomy does not match, and their DNA is not compatible. Lyons put it plainly: “there aren’t some shark-ray shenanigans happening here.”

What is parthenogenesis, and was it Charlotte’s condition?
Parthenogenesis is development from an unfertilized egg without genetic contribution from a male. Lyons explained to the Associated Press that an egg may fuse with a polar body and begin developing; this is not simply an animal cloning itself. It was discussed as one possible explanation for the apparent pregnancy announced in February, but it was never established as what happened to Charlotte.
The Associated Press reported that parthenogenesis has been observed in some insects, fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles, but not mammals. Lyons said she knew of no other documented instance in round stingrays, while noting that it has occurred in other sharks, skates, and rays in human care. Those general examples do not change the aquarium’s later statement that Charlotte was not pregnant.

What is known—and not known—about Charlotte’s disease?
The aquarium described the condition only as a rare reproductive disease affecting Charlotte’s reproductive system. The CBS and WUNC/BPR reports did not name the disease or establish its cause, specific effects, treatment, or outcome. The latest developments documented in those reports are from May and June 2024; they do not establish Charlotte’s status in 2026.

The aquarium was then hoping to obtain a tank nearly twice that size and install live cameras; the report described plans, not confirmation that they were completed.
