A goldfish reported at about 82 cm (roughly 32 inches) was caught at Blue Lake Park in Joondalup, Western Australia, by aquatic biologist Dulana Herath. CBS News reported the catch in February 2024 and described the fish as believed to be the world’s longest. That claim is not the same as a certified record: Guinness World Records lists a different goldfish at 47.4 cm, and the sources available do not establish that Herath’s fish was independently measured or certified.
What happened at Blue Lake?
CBS News reported on 7 February 2024 that Dulana Herath caught the fish at Blue Lake Park in Joondalup, a city in Western Australia. CBS identifies Herath as an aquatic biologist and says the catch occurred during wetland restoration work; that restoration detail is relayed from WAtoday in CBS’s account. CBS gives the fish’s length as about 82 cm, or approximately 32 inches. CBS News’ report is the source for the catch and measurement.

The approximate length is a reported figure, not a measurement independently confirmed by the sources available here. No measuring procedure, weight, age, or sex for the fish is stated in the reports cited.
Is it officially the world’s longest goldfish?
That is not established. Guinness World Records’ longest-goldfish entry lists a 47.4 cm (18.7-inch) fish owned by Joris Gijsbers, measured on 24 March 2003 in Hapert, the Netherlands. The Guinness listing and CBS’s report describe different claims from different dates and sources; the sources do not explain whether the Joondalup fish was submitted to Guinness or how its reported measurement would be assessed against the record entry.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use

| Claim | Reported length | Date and location | What the source establishes |

| Joondalup catch | About 82 cm (roughly 32 inches) | Reported by CBS News on 7 February 2024; Blue Lake Park, Joondalup, Western Australia | CBS reported the catch and approximate measurement; its article does not establish independent measurement or record certification. |
| Guinness record entry | 47.4 cm (18.7 inches) | Measured 24 March 2003 in Hapert, Netherlands | Guinness World Records lists this as its longest-goldfish record, naming Joris Gijsbers. |
So the careful answer is that the fish was reported as about 82 cm and described as believed to be the world’s longest, but the available sources do not establish it as a Guinness-certified world record.
Why did the fish grow so large?
CBS relayed Herath’s explanation that food and space may help fish grow: “There’s a lot of food resources here, so you’ve got tadpoles, you’ve got plants, soft-body plants which they’ll feed on, you’ve got ample amount of space,” he said, as CBS attributed the quotation to Herath via Nine News. CBS also attributed to Herath the reaction, “Yeah, he was a monster.” The wording is CBS’s rendering of remarks attributed through Nine News; no direct Nine News transcript is established by the sources cited.

How unusual is an 82 cm goldfish?
CBS says Western Australian government information gives typical catches up to 200 mm and notes that fish in the state’s southwest may reach twice that size. Those figures are presented secondhand by CBS rather than from the underlying government page, so they are useful only as context from the news report, not as independently checked statistics. The reported Joondalup fish would be far longer than those typical sizes, but its precise size remains an attributed report rather than a verified measurement.
