A bronze whaler shark was found inside the shark barrier at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia, on 8 January 2025, closing the beach and prompting an alleged-spearing report based on drone footage. Authorities opened the barrier the next day and said the shark swam out. The footage prompted an allegation, but the sources available do not establish that the shark was definitively speared.
What happened at Cottesloe Beach
On the morning of 8 January 2025, a bronze whaler reported to be about 1.5 metres long was spotted inside the shark barrier at Cottesloe Beach. The Town closed the beach and swimmers were directed out of the water. Town of Cottesloe CEO Matthew Scott told ABC News it was the first time in the barrier’s five years that a shark had got inside it. ABC News, 8 January 2025

Surf lifesavers reported to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) that the shark had been shot with a speargun and was injured. North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club member Clifford Ford said drone footage showed a diver with a speargun near the shark, apparently trying to reel it in. That is an attributed account of what the footage appeared to show—not proof on its own that the shark was speared. PerthNow, 10 January 2025

DPIRD confirmed in reporting that the barrier was within the Cottesloe Reef Fish Habitat Protection Area, where speargun use is an offence. The protected-area rule is distinct from the question of whether anyone speared this particular shark: the reviewed reports do not establish that as a definitive finding. How the shark was released
Authorities initially made a smaller opening in the barrier, but the shark remained inside overnight. On 9 January, they opened a section about 30 metres wide. DPIRD said drone footage showed the shark leaving through the western side and swimming southwest. The reported 30-metre opening describes the response to this incident, not a general barrier specification. The West Australian, 9 January 2025
What the reported $200 infringement was for
A February report said a 36-year-old man from Wongan Hills received a $200 infringement for possessing a speargun on land adjacent to the closed waters. The reported basis was possession on land; it should not be described as a conviction or as a penalty for shooting the shark. The sources reviewed do not establish a final finding on whether the shark was speared. PerthNow, 6 February 2025
