White lions are African lions with a rare pale coat—not albinos or a separate species. Here is what the scene can tell us, and what it cannot.
What makes a lion white?
White lions are African lions whose pale coats are associated with leucism and a rare inherited genetic variant. The Society for Conservation Biology describes the coat as resulting from leucism and a double recessive allele; white lions remain members of the same species as tawny lions. Society for Conservation Biology
White lions are not albinos
Despite their pale appearance, white lions are not albinos. The Washington Post’s KidsPost explained that both parents must carry the rare white gene for a white cub to be possible. A tawny lion can carry the variant without having a white coat. The Washington Post
Where have white lions been recorded in the wild?
Wild white lions have been documented in South Africa, including Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and the southern part of Kruger National Park, according to the Society for Conservation Biology. Timbavati is particularly associated with the animals in regional accounts. These records describe known locations; they do not identify where the lion in this footage was filmed. Can the video’s location or lion be identified?
Not from the title alone. The footage has not been reliably matched to an original upload that establishes its date, filming location, reserve, or the individual animal. The fact that white lions have been recorded in Timbavati and southern Kruger is not evidence that this particular scene was filmed there. No guide’s comments or filming circumstances can be attributed to the scene without a verified source.
What is a responsible safari sighting like?
A lion beside a vehicle may look close, but the clip does not establish the distance or circumstances. Visitors should observe wildlife without approaching, feeding, touching, or disturbing it. In an account of white lions at Ngala, &Beyond describes guides following sensitive viewing practices and keeping a sighting quiet; that account is general context, not confirmation that this footage came from Ngala. &Beyond: See the Rare White Lions of &Beyond Ngala

How many white lions are left?
A reliable, suitably dated current global census is not established by the cited sources, so a present-day total should not be inferred. &Beyond’s Ngala account reported three white lions living freely in the wild at the time that page was written, but the page’s date is not stated; that figure is historical to the account, not a current count. &Beyond: See the Rare White Lions of &Beyond Ngala
