If one dog takes another dog’s favorite toy, first check both dogs’ body language. A toy grab may be play, but if either dog becomes tense, stop the toy from becoming a point of conflict: calmly create space and, when safe, put the toy away. Don’t punish a growl or reach in to take an item from a tense dog.
Is it play, or is a dog guarding the toy?
A dog taking a toy does not, by itself, prove resource guarding. Some dogs naturally snatch and chase toys as part of play. Look at how both dogs respond: are their bodies loose and are they willingly continuing the interaction, or does one dog seem worried, trapped, or distressed? If you are unsure whether play is safe, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional to assess the dogs’ interaction. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that toys can be among the resources a dog guards.
Signs that call for space
Watch for stiffening over the toy, a hard stare, whale eye (showing the whites of the eyes), lifted lips, growling, or bared teeth. Snapping or escalating tension means the interaction should stop. A growl is a warning signal, not a cue to scold the dog.
What to do in the moment
- If both dogs are relaxed: Stay calm. You can redirect the toy-taking dog with a familiar cue or offer a separate activity. Don’t assume every grab is aggression.
- If either dog looks tense: Don’t chase, yell, reach between the dogs, or try to pull the toy from a dog guarding it. Stop approaching and create distance without escalating the encounter. Once it is safe, end access to the trigger toy.
- Prevent another contest: Put the toy away in a shared area. Give high-value toys and chews only when the dogs are physically separated and each can enjoy the item in peace.
A gate or exercise pen may help maintain separate spaces during supervised management or training. Choose a barrier that provides reliable separation for these particular dogs and suits your home; supervise its use. A barrier supports management but does not treat guarding or guarantee safety.

How to reduce toy conflicts over time
Practice cues such as “drop it” and “leave it,” recall, and trading in calm, low-pressure situations. Reward the dog for moving away from an item or exchanging it, rather than improvising a grab when the dog is already tense. PetMD discusses trades and these cues, as well as removing a trigger toy or offering it only when dogs are separated. If guarding or aggression is present, get individualized guidance before attempting exercises with the contested toy; stop if a dog becomes uncomfortable.
Avoid punishment, including punishing a growl. The American Kennel Club warns against punishment and recommends professional help for new behavior changes or aggression. Management prevents repeated confrontations while a suitable behavior plan is developed; it is not a reason to force the dogs to share.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional
Contact a veterinarian if the behavior changes suddenly or you suspect a medical contributor. Consult a qualified behavior professional if warning signs recur, one dog persistently intimidates the other, or there is snapping or a bite. A veterinarian can assess health factors; a qualified behavior professional can help build a tailored safety and training plan. Ask about the person’s credentials and experience with dog-directed resource guarding before starting a plan.
