Richard Boddington on making Hero Dog: The Journey Home
Boddington approached the movie as an adventure led by the bond between people and animals, rather than as a conventional guide-dog story. Royce’s blindness is an important part of the survival setup, but Chinook is not presented as a certified guide dog, and the film is not intended to be a documentary account of wilderness behavior. For Boddington, that kind of story is most effective when the animal on screen is a real performer. In his interview about the film, he pushed back against the idea that working with children or animals is automatically a problem. He says he enjoys both, and he speaks especially highly of the animal trainers who make productions like this possible.

His description of the trainers is revealing: they are specialized professionals, often devoting themselves to working with a particular type of animal. That expertise is easy for viewers to overlook because the finished performance can appear effortless. Boddington’s comments make clear that Chinook’s presence depended on a carefully managed collaboration between the dog, the trainers, the actors, and the rest of the production team.
Why Chinook is an Alaskan malamute
Boddington chose an Alaskan malamute because Chinook needed to make a strong impression immediately. The dog had to be large, visually striking, and imposing enough to feel credible during the wilderness confrontations that drive the story. A malamute’s size and presence also give the character a distinctive screen identity: Chinook looks like an animal capable of standing out against a harsh Canadian landscape.
Chinook is also part of a continuing movie-character tradition. The character had already appeared in Against the Wild and Against the Wild: Survive the Serengeti. In Hero Dog: The Journey Home, that established character returns for another survival story, this time alongside Royce and Royce’s children.
The dog who played Chinook was Iikona. Zackary Arthur, who plays Max Davis, recalled that Iikona was responsive to food rewards and that the cast and crew became attached to the dog during production. It is a small detail, but it helps explain how a technically demanding animal performance could also become part of the social life of the set.

The log scene produced the film’s most revealing animal moment
Boddington’s most vivid behind-the-scenes story concerns a scene in which Steve Byers’s character is trapped beneath a log. According to Boddington, Iikona appeared to believe that Byers was genuinely hurt. The dog became confused that the people behind the camera were not stepping in to help.
That reaction gives the scene an unusual emotional texture. Iikona was not simply executing a dramatic instruction in the human sense; the dog was responding to what appeared to be a troubling situation. It would be too much to claim that Iikona understood the scripted circumstances exactly as an actor would. But the incident does show how a real animal’s response can introduce an unscripted layer of urgency and concern.
It also illustrates the distinction between a fictional heroic animal and a trained working dog. Boddington connects the appeal of movie animals with qualities people admire in real service and police dogs—loyalty, focus, courage, and a willingness to help. Chinook is a fictional character in a carefully staged adventure, however, and the film should not be used as evidence that every behavior shown on screen would occur in the same way in real wilderness or service work.

A family rescue story with two journeys
The film’s structure gives the animal story a human counterpart. Royce is stranded after a shipwreck and must navigate dangerous terrain with Chinook. At the same time, Royce’s children, Max and Erin, undertake their own effort to find and rescue him.

That parallel is what keeps Hero Dog: The Journey Home from becoming only a story about a remarkable dog.
