Neither wet nor dry cat food is automatically better for every cat. What matters most is choosing a food that is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, feeding an appropriate calorie amount, and accounting for your cat’s health and preferences. Wet food supplies substantially more water; dry food can also be a suitable complete diet, and some cats do well with both.
Wet vs. dry cat food at a glance
| Consideration | Wet food | Dry food |
|---|---|---|
| Water from food | Typically about 70–80% water, according to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. | Contains less water; cats eating dry food generally get more of their water from drinking. |
| Nutritional adequacy | May be complete and balanced, or intended only as supplemental food. Check the package statement. | May be complete and balanced, or intended only as supplemental food. Check the package statement. |
| Portions and calories | Can be served in measured meals. Some cats may eat too much if food is freely available. | Measured portions help track intake; free-feeding may lead some cats to overeat. |
| Preference and routine | Some cats prefer canned food; meal portions may suit a scheduled routine. | Some cats prefer dry food; it may suit the household’s feeding routine. |
| Medical diets | Some therapeutic diets are available in wet formulations. | Some therapeutic diets are available in dry formulations. |
What matters more than the food’s format?
Look for a complete-and-balanced statement
Check the nutritional adequacy statement on the package, usually in small print on the back or side. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) calls it the key label element for matching food to a pet’s nutritional needs. Choose a product labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. A food labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding, including many treats, is not meant to serve as the whole everyday diet.
A package’s adequacy claim is based on the applicable AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding protocol; that does not mean AAFCO approves individual products. The front-of-pack wording or the fact that a food is canned or dry does not establish that it is nutritionally complete.
Compare calories and portions, not just package weight
Read the calorie statement and feeding directions, then treat the suggested amount as a starting point rather than a fixed prescription. Your cat’s activity and body condition affect how much food is appropriate. AAFCO cautions that canned food can appear lower in calories per kilogram “as fed” than dry food because it contains more water; that lower figure does not by itself mean the food is healthier.

Measure what you serve and monitor your cat’s body condition. Free-feeding dry food can make it harder to notice overeating, but wet food can also be overconsumed. Cornell identifies obesity as the most common nutrition-related problem in cats. Ask your veterinarian to help set a suitable weight and feeding plan if your cat is overweight; do not respond with sudden food restriction or an unsupervised crash diet.
How does wet food affect hydration?
Wet cat food typically contains about 70–80% water, according to Cornell’s “How often should you feed your cat?” Dry-food diets contribute less water through food, so cats eating them generally drink more of their daily water requirement. Keep fresh water available whichever format you choose. Water intake can vary with diet, health, and the individual cat; food moisture alone should not be treated as a way to prevent or treat disease.

Cornell’s general estimate is about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day. Its hydration guidance also gives about one cup daily as an average example for a 10-pound cat. These are broad reference figures, not targets to impose on every cat, particularly when food supplies substantial moisture or a health condition affects fluid needs.
Can you mix wet and dry cat food?
Yes. Wet food can be fed in addition to or instead of dry food, as long as the overall diet is appropriate and you account for the calories in both. Choose complete-and-balanced foods for the relevant life stage, measure the portions, and avoid adding a supplemental food as though it were a complete meal. Cornell notes that many high-quality wet and dry foods can meet complete-and-balanced requirements; once adequacy is established, a cat’s preference and your practical feeding routine can guide the choice.

When should a veterinarian guide the choice?
Urinary problems or a history of lower urinary tract disease
Fresh water is especially important for cats eating only dry food that are prone to lower urinary tract disease. If your cat has urinary symptoms or a diagnosed urinary condition, do not use a switch to wet food as treatment. A veterinarian can decide whether a particular diet or other care is appropriate. Cornell notes that urinary diets may help some cats with particular risks, but the evidence it cites does not show that these diets reduced the incidence of feline lower urinary tract signs themselves.
Chronic kidney disease or diabetes
Cats with advanced chronic kidney disease commonly need a protein- and phosphorus-restricted diet. Cornell says therapeutic kidney diets are available in both wet and dry formulations, so the diagnosis and veterinary plan—not a general wet-versus-dry rule—should determine the choice. Diabetic cats may benefit from a moderately carbohydrate-restricted diet, which also calls for individualized veterinary guidance.

Dental pain or trouble eating
A cat with periodontal disease may find dry food difficult to chew. Cornell says wet food, a finer dry nugget, or adding water to food may help, but pain or reduced eating warrants veterinary assessment rather than just a change in texture.
