Track weight and body condition over time as well: an empty bowl or a generic can-and-cup count cannot show whether an individual cat is getting the right amount.
Count all the calories your cat eats
Mixed feeding is one daily food budget, not separate wet- and dry-food allowances. Check the calorie content for each exact product on its package or the manufacturer’s information, then record the amount your cat actually eats. Use matching units, such as kcal per can, pouch, gram, or cup.
- Measure the wet food. Note the portion offered and how much remains.
- Measure the dry food. Weigh or measure the portion rather than estimating from bowl size.
- Add extras. Include treats, table scraps, food used for medication, and any food the cat gets elsewhere.
- Calculate the total. Add the calories from the wet portion, dry portion, and extras for the day.
For healthy-weight feeding, AAHA guidance says treats and other food items should make up no more than 10% of total intake. If several cats share food, or one cat can scavenge another’s bowl, separate or supervise meals so the estimate reflects what this cat actually eats. Food competition and feeding management can make it harder to track intake.
Set a target for your individual cat
Package feeding directions are a starting point, not a personalized prescription. Cornell notes that label directions are based on an average cat, while an individual cat may use less or more energy. The right amount depends on factors such as age, weight, activity, health, and whether the cat is growing, pregnant, or nursing. There is no universal wet-to-dry ratio.

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guideline gives this starting formula for an adult cat’s resting energy requirement (RER): RER (kcal/day) = 30 × body weight in kg + 70. RER is not automatically the cat’s total daily feeding target; daily needs require an individual needs factor. Ask a veterinarian to set or adjust the target, especially for a kitten, a pregnant or nursing cat, a cat with a medical condition, or one on a therapeutic diet.
When comparing foods or combinations, look at calories per portion, whether each food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage and health, and whether the combined daily total fits the veterinary target. Wet food adds water—Cornell describes it as typically about 70–80% water—but moisture content does not tell you how many calories the particular product provides.

Check weight and body condition over time
Look for a trend rather than drawing conclusions from one meal or one weigh-in. Weigh your cat consistently and check body condition; ask your veterinarian to confirm your assessment and help identify an appropriate weight. Cornell uses a 9-point body-condition score (BCS), with 5 considered ideal. At BCS 5, a cat has a proportionate shape, ribs that can be felt beneath a slight fat covering, a visible waist behind the ribs, and minimal abdominal fat. Scores of 1 and 9 describe markedly underweight and obese conditions.
If weight or body condition is moving away from the target you agreed on with your veterinarian, review all food sources—including treats, scraps, and access to another pet’s food—and ask whether the target or feeding plan needs to change. Home weight records are useful for monitoring, but they are not a diagnosis. Cornell notes that a baby scale can help monitor a chubby cat at home.

Make portions easier to manage
Measured meals can make it easier to account for intake than leaving food available continuously. Cornell warns that free-choice dry feeding can lead to overeating and weight gain in some cats; scheduled meals give you more control over portions. Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, lecturer in clinical sciences at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, advises: “There should be a distinct meal time, and the owner should be in control of it.”
An automated feeder or food-dispensing toy may help manage access or portions when that is a household challenge. A pet or baby scale can help record weight. These are optional aids: neither a feeder nor a scale can determine your cat’s calorie target.

When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian about unexplained weight loss, refusal to eat, persistent appetite changes, or a markedly underweight or overweight condition. Cornell specifically advises an examination when a cat refuses food and is losing weight. Ask for veterinary guidance before reducing calories for an overweight cat. Sudden starvation diets can cause serious health problems, including hepatic lipidosis; do not sharply restrict food on your own.
