Neither wet nor dry dog food is automatically better for every Dachshund. Choose a complete-and-balanced food that fits your dog’s life stage and health, then manage calories and portions to keep them lean. For Dachshunds, weight control matters: the Dachshund Club of America notes that the breed’s long back can make it susceptible to back problems and advises preventing excess weight. Food format is best chosen around your dog’s eating needs and what works for your household.
Wet vs. dry food: the practical differences
Both formats can provide complete nutrition. Moisture, texture, storage, and your dog’s ability to eat the food are useful ways to compare them; none establishes that one format is healthier overall. Calories also vary by product, so compare the label rather than assuming one format is lower-calorie.
| What to consider | Wet food | Dry food |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture and texture | Higher moisture and a softer texture, which may suit a dog that has difficulty eating hard food. | Less moisture and firmer pieces. |
| Storage and serving | Opened canned food needs refrigeration. | Generally easier to portion and store. |
| Calories | Energy per serving varies by product. Check the label and measure portions. | Energy per serving varies by product. Check the label and measure portions. |
| Dental care | Soft foods may be associated with more plaque in some studies, but wet food is not the only factor in oral health. | Ordinary kibble is not a reliable dental intervention. Purpose-designed dental foods are a separate category. |
| When it may be useful | When a dog prefers or needs a softer texture, as part of a complete diet. | When a dog eats it comfortably and the format is convenient for the household. |
These format differences are summarized in VCA’s guidance on choosing dog food. They are not a substitute for selecting a nutritionally adequate food and appropriate portion.
Why weight control matters for Dachshunds
The Dachshund Club of America advises owners to prevent overweight and monitor activity because a Dachshund’s long back can make the dog susceptible to back problems. Its guidance supports keeping a dog lean; it does not establish that wet food, dry food, or any particular food prevents back disease. The club also recommends moderate exercise to maintain muscle tone. See the Dachshund Club of America’s health guidance.

For an overweight Dachshund, do not simply switch formats or sharply cut meals on your own. VCA describes veterinarian-guided weight-reduction diets in both wet and dry forms. These therapeutic foods may differ in energy density and nutrient profiles. Work with your veterinary team to set a target, choose a diet and calorie amount, and arrange follow-up. See VCA’s guidance on obesity in dogs.
How to choose a food for your Dachshund
- Check nutritional adequacy. Look for a statement that the food is complete and balanced for the intended life stage. A product suited to adult maintenance, for example, should not be assumed appropriate for every life stage.
- Consider your dog, not the format. Account for age, health, appetite, chewing ability, and any veterinary recommendations. A softer texture may help some dogs; another dog may eat dry food more comfortably.
- Compare calories and measure portions. Use the product’s calorie information and a measured serving. Adjustments should be guided by your dog’s body condition and veterinary advice, not by a wet-versus-dry assumption.
- Assess body condition with your veterinary team. WSAVA’s nutrition guidelines emphasize an individualized assessment, including body condition and calorie needs. Ask the veterinary team to help determine whether your Dachshund’s current intake and weight are appropriate.
- Do not judge quality by the ingredient list alone. Ingredient lists do not, by themselves, establish a food’s overall nutritional quality. Consider the adequacy statement and your dog’s needs instead.

Does dry food clean a Dachshund’s teeth?
Ordinary kibble should not be treated as dental care. VCA says dry food alone does not reliably improve oral health. WSAVA’s dental guideline review reports mixed findings for ordinary wet and dry foods; standard kibble often breaks at the incisal edge and provides minimal to no cleaning at the gumline. If dental support is a concern, ask your veterinarian about a purpose-designed dental diet or products accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council for plaque control. A regular kibble is not an equivalent substitute. See WSAVA’s Global Dental Guidelines and the VOHC accepted-products list.

A UC Davis-hosted guide lists Royal Canin Dachshund Adult as meeting AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance. The guide reports calculated, as-fed energy values of 3,574 kcal/kg and 293 kcal/cup from Royal Canin product data; the guide’s publication date is not stated. This is an example, not an endorsement or proof that the food is better than a wet food or suitable for every Dachshund.
