The image identifies the setting and the action, but it does not name the injected substance or provide a treatment protocol.
AAHA published the educational-image page on May 3, 2019, and credits the photograph to Jan Bellows. The safest interpretation is therefore descriptive: this is a clinical teaching image, not evidence of a particular product’s effectiveness or a set of instructions for repeating the procedure.

Exactly what AAHA Figure 9 identifies
The page titled “Educational Images: Injecting perioceuticals” labels the photograph as Figure 9. Its caption reads: “Injection of perioceutic into a 5 mm cleaned, bleeding periodontal pocket.” That sentence supplies four concrete facts:
- An injection is taking place.
- The caption calls the injected material a “perioceutic.”
- The periodontal pocket had been cleaned before the pictured injection.
- The pocket is described as bleeding and measuring 5 mm.
Those are captioned characteristics of one educational photograph. They are not a study sample, a treatment recommendation, or a report of what happened to a group of animals. The page was published on May 3, 2019, and the photo credit is Jan Bellows.

Nothing in the caption identifies the animal’s species, age, diagnosis, medical history, anesthesia plan, or the clinician’s broader treatment plan. Those omissions matter because an image can show a moment in care without supplying the clinical reasoning that led to it.
What “injecting a perioceutic” means here
In this title, “perioceutic” functions as the name of the material being placed in the periodontal pocket. AAHA’s image page does not define the term in a way that identifies a particular chemical, drug class, formulation, or brand. It also does not say whether the material is antimicrobial, regenerative, anti-inflammatory, or intended for another purpose.
That makes the wording useful for identifying the action but insufficient for identifying the product. “Injecting perioceuticals” should not be read as a product name, a universal procedure, or proof that every 5 mm pocket should receive an injection. The plural in the page heading is a general heading; Figure 9’s caption refers to a singular “perioceutic,” without naming it.

Readers sometimes expect an educational photograph to answer “What is injected?” In this case, the source does not. The only accurate answer from the AAHA page is that a perioceutic was injected. Any more specific identification would require a separate source that names the agent and connects it to this figure.
How to interpret the 5 mm pocket measurement
The 5 mm figure describes the pocket shown in Figure 9. It is a local measurement attached to that photographed site. AAHA does not present it as an average, a prevalence figure, a severity cutoff for all patients, or a threshold that automatically calls for a perioceutic.

A single depth also cannot describe the whole mouth. Periodontal findings can vary by tooth and surface, and a complete assessment may include other observations that are not visible or reported in the caption. The photograph gives no chart of other pocket depths, no radiographic findings, and no explanation of how the measurement was obtained.
For the same reason, the number cannot be used to calculate a success rate or predict an individual animal’s response. It is a measurement of the pictured pocket, not an outcome. The page reports no follow-up depth, healing assessment, pain score, or other result after the injection.

Information the AAHA image does not provide
The absence of details is not a minor technicality. These are the specific facts a reader would need before treating the image as clinical guidance, and none is supplied on the image page:
| Clinical detail | What the AAHA image page establishes |
|---|---|
| Injected agent | Only the generic word “perioceutic”; no active ingredient or formulation is named. |
| Dose or volume | Not stated. |
| Delivery instrument | Not stated. |
| Manufacturer or brand | Not stated or recommended. |
| Indication | The caption shows placement in the depicted periodontal pocket but gives no broader indication or selection rule. |
| Patient details | Species, age, health status, and dental diagnosis are not identified in the caption. |
| Anesthesia and monitoring | Not described. |
| Expected benefit | No benefit or efficacy claim is reported. |
| Risks and contraindications | Not discussed on the image page. |
| Follow-up | No post-treatment examination or outcome is provided. |
Because these fields are missing, the image cannot support a product comparison or a do-it-yourself instruction set. It also cannot establish that the depicted material is appropriate for another pocket, another tooth, or another patient.
Why the photograph is not a step-by-step protocol
An educational image captures one point in a procedure. It does not show the examination that preceded it, the cleaning technique, the decision to inject, or the monitoring that followed. Even the words “cleaned” and “bleeding” are caption descriptions, not a sequence of directions for reproducing the treatment.

Turning Figure 9 into a protocol would require information the page does not contain: how the pocket was diagnosed, what findings justified local therapy, which material was selected, how it was prepared, how much was used, what instruments and protective measures were required, and how the patient was managed for pain and recovery. The AAHA page supplies none of those parameters.
For a pet owner, the practical implication is simple: do not use the 5 mm measurement or the photograph as a prescription. For a veterinary professional, the image can illustrate a concept for discussion, but the agent’s current labeling, professional guidance, patient assessment, and practice protocols would have to supply the missing clinical details.
What “cleaned” and “bleeding” tell you—and what they do not
“Cleaned” tells the reader that the caption places the injection after cleaning of the depicted pocket. It does not specify which deposits were removed, which instruments were used, or whether additional periodontal treatment occurred elsewhere in the mouth.
“Bleeding” is likewise a description of the photographed pocket at that moment. The caption does not say whether bleeding was expected, how much occurred, whether it stopped, or what it meant for prognosis. It should not be converted into a claim that the injection caused bleeding, resolved bleeding, or improved periodontal health.
Reading these words literally prevents a common mistake: treating visual descriptors as before-and-after evidence. Figure 9 has no stated comparison image and no reported outcome.

AAHA’s communication advice for discussing oral care
AAHA’s related “Terminology and messaging” guidance is relevant because the word “perioceutic” may be unfamiliar to clients. It advises veterinary teams to explain oral-health services consistently and to avoid acronyms, unexplained jargon, and oversimplified labels.
“The practice team should avoid acronyms, overly simplified terminology, and medical jargon when discussing oral healthcare with clients.”
The same guidance says the broader term “oral health” communicates the scope of care better than relying only on “prophy” or “dental.” AAHA attributes this consensus viewpoint to its Guidelines Task Force:
“For example, the consensus viewpoint of the Guidelines Task Force is that using the simplified term “prophy” is incorrect and misleading because our dental patients often have calculus and gingivitis before prophylactic therapy is recommended.”

Applied to Figure 9, clear communication means naming what is known and labeling what is not. A clinician could explain that a local material was placed in a cleaned periodontal pocket, then identify the actual agent, purpose, evidence, alternatives, and uncertainties for the specific patient. The photograph itself cannot substitute for that conversation.

Pain context from AAHA’s dental guidance
AAHA’s related “Addressing pain” guidance notes that dogs and cats can mask obvious signs of oral discomfort. Possible indirect signs include halitosis, teeth chattering, weight loss, changes in eating habits, lethargy, and behavior changes. A pet showing none of these signs may still need an assessment; the guidance warns against relying only on overt behavior.
That page discusses pain management across the procedure—pre-emptive, intraprocedural, and postprocedural care. It does not provide an injection protocol for Figure 9, identify the pictured agent, or report a pain outcome from the photograph. The pain guidance is therefore context for responsible dental communication, not evidence that the perioceutic shown has a particular analgesic effect.
Questions to ask when a veterinarian discusses a perioceutic
If a clinician proposes a perioceutic for a pet, the image can be a starting point for questions, not the answer. Ask for patient-specific information in plain language:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- What exactly is the agent? Request its generic name, formulation, and intended purpose.
- Which finding supports its use? Ask how the relevant pocket was measured and what other examination findings matter.
- What is known about benefits? Ask what outcome will be monitored and over what time period.
- What are the alternatives? Clarify other management options, including the consequences of choosing none.
- What risks or precautions apply? Ask about adverse effects, interactions, and circumstances in which the material would not be used.
- How will comfort be managed? Ask about the pain plan before, during, and after the dental procedure.
- What follow-up is needed? Establish which signs should prompt a call and when the mouth will be reassessed.
These questions do not assume that the treatment is appropriate or inappropriate. They ensure that the decision rests on the individual animal’s examination and on information that the photograph does not contain.
How to read this educational image responsibly
- Separate caption facts from inference. The caption supports injection into a cleaned, bleeding 5 mm pocket; it does not support a named product or outcome.
- Treat the date as part of the context. The page is dated May 3, 2019. A later clinical label or guideline may contain information not present on that page.
- Do not treat 5 mm as a universal rule. It is the depth in one photographed pocket.
- Do not infer efficacy from appearance. There is no follow-up result attached to Figure 9.
- Do not infer equipment or dose. Neither is specified.
- Use precise language with clients. Explain the actual agent and plan rather than relying on an unfamiliar label alone.
The accurate takeaway
AAHA Figure 9 is an educational photograph credited to Jan Bellows that depicts a perioceutic being injected into a cleaned, bleeding periodontal pocket measured at 5 mm. It identifies a moment in veterinary dental care, not the substance, dose, equipment, indication, or result. Any decision about using a perioceutic must come from a current, patient-specific veterinary assessment and a clear explanation of the named treatment—not from the image alone.
