Cat zoomies are sudden bursts of intense activity, often called frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs). They are usually normal when a cat seems playful and relaxed, and may happen after a period of inactivity or around dawn and dusk. A sudden change from your cat’s usual pattern, or signs of fear, pain, or vocalizing during an episode, deserve closer attention and a conversation with your veterinarian.

PetMD describes zoomies as apparently out-of-control bursts, distinct from more measured interactive play. There is no definitive research establishing exactly why they happen, so explanations such as releasing energy, instinctive behavior, or responding to a trigger are possibilities rather than proven causes.

What do cat zoomies look like?

A cat having zoomies may race around, make sudden turns, jump, or pounce. The behavior can appear chaotic and may stop as abruptly as it began. As veterinary behaviorist Elizabeth Stelow, DVM, DACVB, puts it in PetMD: “Zoomies appear almost out of control, whereas play is often more measured.”

Body language helps distinguish a playful burst from distress. A playful cat may have relaxed posture and neutral or forward ears. Tense posture, flattened ears, dilated pupils, or a puffed or flicking tail can indicate fear or distress. No single sign confirms what is happening; consider the whole episode and whether it is familiar for your cat.

Why do cats get the zoomies?

There is no definitive research establishing one cause. Possible explanations include releasing energy after inactivity, expressing instinctive behavior, or reacting to something in the environment or body. The timing and circumstances can offer clues, but they do not prove a cause.

After being inactive

Zoomies may happen after a cat has been resting. Alison Gerken, DVM, DACVB, veterinary behaviorist at the San Francisco SPCA, told PetMD: “Playful zoomies often occur when a cat has been inactive and suddenly feels energized.”

Around dawn or dusk

Episodes often occur around dawn or dusk. A cat may also become active after a quiet period in the household. Kittens and young cats may have zoomies more frequently than older cats, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

In response to instinct or a trigger

Instinctive behavior or an environmental or physical trigger may contribute. Notice what happened before the episode—such as play or a change in the environment—but treat any suspected trigger as a possibility, not a diagnosis.

Are cat zoomies normal?

Often, yes. A familiar episode is more reassuring when your cat appears relaxed or playful and returns to its usual behavior afterward. The following comparison can help you decide whether to observe or seek advice; it cannot diagnose a health problem.

What to notice More consistent with ordinary playful zoomies Reason to pay closer attention
Pattern Familiar behavior for your cat Sudden change from your cat’s usual pattern
Body language Relaxed posture; ears neutral or forward Tense posture, flattened ears, dilated pupils, or a puffed or flicking tail
During the episode Appears playful and settles afterward Seems fearful, appears to be in pain, or vocalizes

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Contact your veterinarian if the behavior is a sudden change, or if your cat appears to be in pain, seems fearful, or vocalizes during an episode. A veterinarian can assess the change and rule out health problems that might explain it, as advised by the Merck Veterinary Manual.
