What Are the 5 Largest Crabs Found in U.S. Coastal Waters?

Red king, blue king, Dungeness, blue, and Jonah crabs all reach impressive sizes, but their agency-reported measurements differ—and most are not routine open-beach crawlers.

The biggest crab in this selection is the red king crab, which NOAA Fisheries says can reach 24 pounds with a five-foot leg span. A Pribilof Islands blue king crab can exceed 18 pounds, while large Dungeness crabs surpass 10 inches in shell width. Blue crabs and Jonah crabs are smaller by the published figures available here, but still rank among the largest familiar true crabs in their regions.

Those numbers do not create a scientifically verified national ranking of crabs routinely crawling onto open U.S. beaches. The agencies measure different features—weight, shell width, total length, or leg span—and most of the largest species are documented in marine, subtidal, offshore, or estuarine habitat. The five profiles below are therefore a practical selection of exceptionally large crabs found in U.S. coastal waters, with the measurement and habitat evidence stated for each one.

Why “largest crab” needs a measurement

A crab can be called large because it is heavy, wide across the carapace, long from end to end, or broad when its legs are fully extended. Those are not interchangeable measurements. A 24-pound animal cannot be fairly placed in a single ordered list beside a crab reported as nine inches long unless the comparison explains what each number represents.

The figures in this guide come from NOAA Fisheries, NOAA educational material, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They are species-profile maxima or notable records, not one standardized survey conducted with the same ruler and the same definition of “largest.” The order below is a reader-friendly profile order, not a verified top-five beach-sighting ranking.

Crab or crab relative Published size figure Measurement Geographic or habitat context Taxonomic note
Red king crab Up to 24 pounds; five-foot leg span Body weight and fully extended leg span Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Gulf of Alaska, south to British Columbia; marine habitat King crab, more closely related to hermit crabs than to true crabs
Blue king crab Pribilof Islands animals sometimes exceed 18 pounds Body weight Alaskan waters, including the Pribilof Islands; marine habitat King crab, not a true crab
Dungeness crab Large males can exceed 10 inches; NOAA guide gives a carapace up to 20 cm Shell width or carapace measurement, depending on source Aleutian Islands to Magdalena Bay, Mexico; subtidal bottoms and estuaries True crab
Blue crab About nine inches across the shell; one Chesapeake record weighed 1.1 pounds and measured 10.72 inches tip-to-tip Carapace width versus tip-to-tip span Atlantic and Gulf coastal waters, especially estuaries and bays True crab
Jonah crab Males up to nine inches Length as reported by NOAA Northwest Atlantic, Canada to Florida True crab

Because the sources use different measurements and populations, the table should be read as a set of size benchmarks. It should not be converted into a precise national ranking.

1. Red king crab: the heavyweight benchmark

NOAA Fisheries describes the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) as “the largest of the commercially harvested crabs.” Its species profile reports a maximum of 24 pounds and a five-foot leg span. The first figure is weight; the second describes the reach of the legs, not the width of the shell. Together they explain why red king crab is the obvious heavyweight in this selection.

The North American range includes the Bering Sea, the Aleutian Islands, the Gulf of Alaska, and waters south to British Columbia. NOAA’s profile describes a marine range and habitat. It does not establish that red king crabs routinely crawl onto exposed U.S. swimming beaches. A person standing on a beach should not assume that the largest crab by commercial-harvest description is the one most likely to appear in the surf zone.

Red king crab is also a taxonomic reminder. Despite its name, it is a king crab rather than a “true crab” in the strict zoological sense. Alaska’s fish and game agency notes that king crabs are more closely related to hermit crabs. That relationship does not make the animal any less crab-like to a beach observer, but it matters when comparing it with brachyuran true crabs such as blue, Dungeness, and Jonah crabs.

NOAA Fisheries’ red king crab profile is the source for the 24-pound and five-foot figures and was accessed in 2026.

2. Blue king crab: an 18-pound Alaskan giant

The blue king crab (Paralithodes platypus) is another very large king crab from Alaska. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports that blue king crabs from the Pribilof Islands sometimes exceed 18 pounds. This is a weight threshold, not a shell-width or leg-span measurement, so it cannot be placed on an exact inch-for-inch ladder beside the other species.

The Pribilof figure also describes a particular population rather than every blue king crab. “Sometimes exceed” signals that 18 pounds is an exceptional upper observation, not the normal adult size. The agency’s account concerns marine Alaskan waters; it does not say that these crabs commonly emerge onto open beaches. Their inclusion here reflects their exceptional documented mass and their presence in U.S. coastal waters, not a claim about frequent beach sightings.

Blue king crab shares the king-crab classification issue with red king crab. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game explicitly distinguishes king crabs from true crabs and describes their closer relationship to hermit crabs. For a field observer, the practical point is to record what was measured: an 18-plus-pound weight is not evidence that the shell itself is 18 inches wide.

Consult the Alaska Department of Fish and Game blue king crab profile for the Pribilof Islands size statement.

3. Dungeness crab: a broad Pacific true crab

Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) is the largest true crab in this group by the published shell-width figures, although the sources do not use exactly the same wording. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says a large male can exceed 10 inches in shell width. A NOAA educational guide, Pacific Coast: A Guide to Common Marine Invertebrates (2021), gives a carapace of up to 20 centimeters—about 7.9 inches—using a different source description and measurement context.

Those two numbers should remain separate rather than being blended into one supposed maximum. “Exceed 10 inches” describes a large male in the Alaska profile, while “up to 20 cm” is the NOAA guide’s stated carapace figure. Differences can reflect population, sex, sampling, rounding, or the way the measurement was defined. Neither source supplies a standardized nationwide record.

The species’ range runs from the Aleutian Islands to Magdalena Bay, Mexico. Dungeness crabs are widely distributed in subtidal marine areas, favor sandy or muddy bottoms, and also occur in estuaries. That habitat evidence makes them more relevant to coastal and estuarine observers than an exclusively offshore animal, but it still does not prove that large individuals routinely crawl high onto open recreational beaches.

Dungeness is a true crab, unlike the two king crabs above. When identifying a report, note the animal’s location, sex if known, and whether the observer measured the shell across its widest point or recorded a different dimension. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game species profile and NOAA’s 2021 guide at this PDF provide the two published size references.

4. Blue crab: a nine-inch shell and a larger tip-to-tip record

Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) is a true crab of Atlantic and Gulf coastal waters. NOAA Fisheries says blue crabs can grow to about nine inches across the shell. That is a carapace-width figure and describes the species’ broad size potential, not a typical individual encountered by a beach visitor. NOAA also gives a typical maturity weight of about one-third of a pound, which shows how different an ordinary mature crab can be from a record-sized specimen.

NOAA’s profile separately records the largest Chesapeake Bay crab discussed there: 1.1 pounds and 10.72 inches tip-to-tip. Tip-to-tip span includes the animal’s extended lateral reach; it is not the same as nine inches across the shell. Treating the two figures as competing shell-width records would overstate what the source says.

Blue crabs are strongly associated with bays, estuaries, and shallow coastal environments, so beachgoers may encounter them near shore depending on local conditions. The available profile, however, is a species and fishery account rather than a census of crabs crawling onto every U.S. beach. A single Chesapeake record should likewise remain an anecdote about that crab, not the typical size for the entire species.

For the shell-width, maturity-weight, and Chesapeake record details, see NOAA Fisheries’ blue crab profile.

5. Jonah crab: a nine-inch Northwest Atlantic male

Jonah crab (Cancer borealis) rounds out the selection of large U.S. coastal true crabs. NOAA reports lengths of up to nine inches for males. The source gives length rather than shell width, body weight, or leg span. That distinction prevents a direct numerical ranking against a Dungeness shell measurement or a king crab’s weight.

Jonah crabs range through the Northwest Atlantic from Canada to Florida. The broad geographic span covers several coastal regions and environments, but the cited profile does not establish that nine-inch males routinely leave the water to crawl across exposed beaches. The most accurate conclusion is that a very large Jonah crab is a documented coastal-water possibility, while the exact chance of seeing one from shore depends on local habitat and conditions not quantified by the profile.

Because the reported maximum is sex-specific, an observation should include sex only when it can be identified reliably. Do not relabel the nine-inch figure as a general size for every Jonah crab, and do not assume that “length” means the same endpoint-to-endpoint measurement used in another species account.

What you may see on a U.S. beach: habitat versus headline size

The phrase “crawling U.S. beaches” combines two different questions: which crabs can become very large, and which animals are regularly visible on sand. The evidence above answers the first question more strongly than the second. Red and blue king crabs are documented from Alaskan marine waters; Dungeness crabs occupy subtidal bottoms and estuaries; blue crabs are associated with Atlantic and Gulf coastal waters; and Jonah crabs occur from Canada to Florida. None of those statements is a guarantee of routine open-beach appearances.

For a credible observation record, write down the beach or estuary, date, approximate habitat, and the measurement method. “Ten inches” is incomplete unless it says shell width, total length, or another defined dimension. A photograph beside a scale can help distinguish a shell-width estimate from a leg-span impression, but a visual estimate should not be presented as an official maximum.

Horseshoe crabs: the famous beach visitor that is not a true crab

Horseshoe crabs deserve a separate sidebar because they are among the most conspicuous large arthropods on Atlantic and Gulf beaches. They come ashore to spawn, which makes them much more visibly associated with beaches than many of the large marine crabs listed above.

The Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) is not a crustacean or a true crab. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service explains: “The horseshoe crab is not actually a true crab, but a member of an ancient group of arthropods, closely related to spiders and scorpions.” NOAA’s Ocean Service likewise addresses the common-name trap.

Size is reported differently from crab-shell measurements. The Fish and Wildlife Service says mature Georgia females can reach 12 inches across the prosoma and 24 inches long including the tail. The 24-inch figure is total length including the tail (telson), not carapace width and not a crab-shell measurement. Including horseshoe crabs in a strict true-crab top five would therefore be taxonomically incorrect, even though a spawning beach may be where a visitor notices the largest crab-like animal.

Read the agency profiles at U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and NOAA Ocean Service for the classification and Georgia female measurements.

How to compare a large crab without overstating the evidence

  1. Name the species and taxonomic group. Say whether it is a true crab, a king crab related to hermit crabs, or a horseshoe crab that is not a true crab.
  2. Keep the measurement attached to the number. Use “24 pounds,” “five-foot leg span,” “10 inches shell width,” “nine inches across the shell,” “10.72 inches tip-to-tip,” or “nine inches long,” rather than writing an unqualified “10-inch crab.”
  3. Separate exceptional records from normal size. A Pribilof blue king crab that sometimes exceeds 18 pounds and a 1.1-pound Chesapeake blue crab record are notable observations, not typical adult values.
  4. Identify the geography. Alaska, the Pacific coast, the Chesapeake, and the Northwest Atlantic represent different populations and habitats. A regional maximum is not automatically a national maximum.
  5. Describe habitat accurately. Use “marine,” “subtidal,” “estuarine,” or “coastal waters” when that is what the source establishes. Do not turn a coastal range into a claim that the species commonly walks onto dry sand.

Bottom line on the five largest crabs

By documented mass, red king crab leads this selection at up to 24 pounds, followed by Pribilof Islands blue king crabs that sometimes exceed 18 pounds. Dungeness, blue, and Jonah crabs are substantial true crabs, but their published figures use shell width, tip-to-tip span, or length rather than a shared measurement. Horseshoe crabs are spectacular beach spawners and can reach 24 inches including the tail, yet they belong in a clearly labeled comparison—not in a strict true-crab ranking.
