What Are the Four Mamba Species—and Is the Black Mamba the Deadliest?

The genus Dendroaspis contains four recognized species. Compare the black, eastern green, Jameson’s and western green mambas, then see why “deadliest” requires a defined metric.

There are four recognized mamba species in the genus Dendroaspis: the black mamba, eastern green mamba, Jameson’s mamba and western green mamba. The black mamba is exceptionally dangerous medically, but calling it simply “the deadliest snake” is too broad. The strongest available figure is narrower: the World Health Organization says the case-fatality rate after black mamba bites is close to 100% when antivenom is not given.

That statistic describes untreated envenoming, not every bite and not a universal ranking against every snake. The four mambas also differ in range, habitat and likely opportunities for contact with people.

The four mambas at a glance

South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) states that four species belong to Dendroaspis, a genus distributed through much of tropical Africa. They are all elapid snakes, and the genus is generally described as large, agile and active by day. Their common names can be misleading: the black mamba is usually brown, gray or olive on the outside, while the inside of its mouth is dark; the other three are called green mambas because green is their characteristic body color.

Common name Scientific name Habitat distinction What can be said about medical importance
Black mamba Dendroaspis polylepis The mainly terrestrial member of the genus WHO identifies a very high untreated case-fatality risk after bites
Eastern green mamba Dendroaspis angusticeps Arboreal in the SANBI account Venomous and medically important; an equivalent comparative fatality figure is not established here
Jameson’s mamba Dendroaspis jamesoni Arboreal in the SANBI account Venomous and medically important; an equivalent comparative fatality figure is not established here
Western green mamba Dendroaspis viridis Arboreal; the Los Angeles Zoo describes it in West African forests Venomous and medically important; an equivalent comparative fatality figure is not established here

“Four types” therefore means four recognized species, not four color phases and not four species plus additional Jameson’s subspecies. Some taxonomic treatments divide D. jamesoni into two subspecies, but those are not additional species in this four-species overview.

What makes a mamba a mamba?

Mambas are members of the family Elapidae, the same broad snake family that includes cobras and coral snakes. Their venom is neurotoxic: it can interfere with nerve signaling and, in severe envenoming, the muscles required for breathing. The genus-level description of being diurnal means these snakes are active mainly during daylight, but it does not guarantee that an individual will behave the same way in every encounter.

SANBI describes the black mamba as terrestrial and the other three species as arboreal. That is a useful ecological division, not an absolute rule that a green mamba can never come to the ground or that a black mamba never climbs. “Arboreal” indicates where a species usually spends much of its time and finds prey, shelter or travel routes.

Species profiles

Black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis)

The black mamba is the genus’s mainly ground-dwelling species. Its common name refers to the dark lining of its mouth rather than a reliably black body. Size, body color and posture can vary, so photographs or a brief sighting are not dependable ways to judge whether a snake is a black mamba.

It is the species most prominently associated with severe human envenoming in medical guidance. WHO’s snakes gallery for sub-Saharan Africa says: “Without antivenom the case fatality rate after bites by this species is close to 100%.” The qualifying words are essential. This is a case-fatality statement for bites without antivenom; it is not a claim that every bite is fatal, that treatment cannot work or that the black mamba causes the most snake deaths worldwide.

Eastern green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps)

The eastern green mamba is one of the three arboreal species recognized in the SANBI account. Its green coloration and tree-associated lifestyle distinguish it in broad terms from the terrestrial black mamba, but color alone should never be used to approach or identify a venomous snake.

South African Department of Health material lists the eastern green mamba’s occurrence countries separately from those of the other species. That matters because a general statement that “mambas live throughout Africa” hides meaningful range differences. The collective distribution is sub-Saharan Africa; no single country list applies to all four.

Jameson’s mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni)

Jameson’s mamba is another arboreal species. The South African Department of Health document gives a broad list of African countries for its occurrence, illustrating that its range is not interchangeable with the eastern or western green mamba’s range. Exact distribution depends on which taxonomic and geographic treatment is being used.

Readers sometimes count the two Jameson’s subspecies recognized by some taxonomic sources as extra mamba species. That inflates the total. For the genus-level count used by SANBI and the medical references here, D. jamesoni remains one of four species.

Western green mamba (Dendroaspis viridis)

The western green mamba is an arboreal snake associated with West African forests. The Los Angeles Zoo describes it as living in those forests and as seldom encountering people. “Seldom encountered” is an ecological and exposure observation, not a statement that its venom is harmless or that a bite does not require emergency care.

Where the four species live

The genus occupies much of tropical and sub-Saharan Africa, but the species do not share one continuous, identical range. The South African Department of Health’s 2025 document on polyvalent snakebite antivenom lists occurrence countries separately for the eastern green, Jameson’s, black and western green mambas. Use those species-specific lists when a precise country or range question matters.

Geographic question What the available references establish
Do all four occur throughout Africa? No. The genus is broadly African, but each species has its own occurrence list.
Which mamba is mainly terrestrial? The black mamba.
Which are described as arboreal? The eastern green, Jameson’s and western green mambas in the SANBI reference.
Where is the western green mamba described? West African forests, according to the Los Angeles Zoo account.
Is a single range map enough? No. A combined genus map can imply overlap that is not present for every species.

Is the black mamba really the deadliest?

There is no single scientific meaning of “deadliest.” A ranking could compare venom potency in a laboratory, the proportion of untreated bites that result in death, the number of bites, total human deaths, or the chance that people encounter the species. Those measures produce different answers and require different data.

Meaning of “deadliest” What can responsibly be said
Untreated case fatality after a bite WHO reports that black mamba bite case fatality without antivenom is close to 100%.
Venom potency Venom composition and toxicity vary among mamba species; a single universal order is not established by the cited material.
Total human deaths No equivalent, reliable death-count comparison for all four species is established here.
Likelihood of encountering people Exposure depends on habitat, local behavior and human activity. The western green mamba is described as seldom encountering people, but that does not create a genus-wide exposure ranking.
Outcome with treatment Untreated statistics cannot be transferred directly to treated bites. Access to emergency care and appropriate antivenom changes the risk.

The best-supported conclusion is therefore precise: the black mamba is exceptionally medically dangerous, especially when a bite is not treated promptly, but the evidence does not justify an unqualified claim that it is the deadliest snake in every sense.

How mamba envenoming becomes an emergency

Mamba venom is neurotoxic. Severe envenoming can progress from local or general symptoms to weakness, paralysis and respiratory failure. The speed and severity of a real bite depend on factors such as the amount of venom delivered, the bite location, the victim’s size and health, and how quickly effective medical care is reached. A snake’s reputation or apparent size cannot be used to estimate the outcome of an individual bite.

A peer-reviewed genus-wide analysis published in 2017 found meaningful differences in venom composition and toxicity among mambas and examined how available antivenoms cross-react with those venoms. This is why treatment decisions belong to clinicians and poison-control or snakebite specialists rather than to a general species label. Antivenom products are medical treatments selected for the local situation; they are not consumer items to obtain and administer independently.

What to do after a suspected mamba bite

Treat any suspected mamba bite as a medical emergency, even if the wound looks small or the person feels well initially.

  1. Call emergency medical services immediately and state that a venomous snake bite is suspected.
  2. Keep the person as still and calm as possible while waiting for help. Movement can accelerate circulation of venom.
  3. Follow instructions from local emergency responders or a poison center, and arrange urgent transport to a facility equipped to manage snakebite and provide appropriate antivenom.
  4. Do not try to catch, handle, photograph at close range, kill or transport the snake. A verbal description from a safe distance is preferable to another bite.
  5. Do not delay professional care while attempting home remedies or trying to determine the species with certainty.

This article cannot diagnose envenoming or replace local emergency guidance. If breathing difficulty, weakness, drooping eyelids, trouble speaking or swallowing, collapse or rapidly worsening symptoms occur, tell emergency dispatch immediately.

Why common names and photographs cause mistakes

“Black mamba” does not mean a uniformly black-bodied snake, and “green mamba” does not identify one single species. Lighting, age, camera color balance and regional variation can all mislead an observer. Tree-dwelling behavior is a useful broad ecological clue, but it is not a safe identification method.

For wildlife workers, clinicians and researchers, reliable identification can involve locality, scale patterns, body proportions and expert examination. For the public, the safer rule is simpler: maintain distance from any unfamiliar snake and seek medical help after a bite without waiting for a perfect identification.

Bottom line on the four types

The recognized Dendroaspis species are the black mamba (D. polylepis), eastern green mamba (D. angusticeps), Jameson’s mamba (D. jamesoni) and western green mamba (D. viridis). The black mamba is mainly terrestrial; the other three are described as arboreal. Their African ranges differ, and Jameson’s subspecies should not be added to the species count.

“Deadliest” needs a metric. WHO’s close-to-100% figure applies specifically to black mamba bites without antivenom. It supports treating the species as an exceptional medical threat, not declaring that every bite is fatal or that the black mamba ranks first under every possible comparison.
