Georgia is home to three rattlesnake species: the eastern diamondback (Crotalus adamanteus), timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) and pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius). They occupy different parts of the state and vary sharply in size, pattern, tail appearance and habitat. The safest identification is always made from a distance; Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) warns that rattlesnakes can strike without warning.

The eastern diamondback is the largest and is associated mainly with the Coastal Plain south of the Fall Line. Timber rattlesnakes occur through most of Georgia in wooded habitats. Pygmy rattlesnakes are much smaller, with regional subspecies in the Piedmont, mountains and lower Coastal Plain.

How many rattlesnake species are in Georgia?

The three rattlesnakes above are the species meant by “the 3 types of rattlesnakes in Georgia.” Georgia DNR’s current live snake-information page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists 47 snake species statewide and includes those three rattlesnakes. The same live inventory contains seven venomous-snake entries because it lists northern and Florida cottonmouths separately, along with the other venomous species.

An older DNR encounter article dated April 19, 2022, referred to 46 native snake species and six venomous species. Those figures belong to that dated article and should not be mixed with the current live-page totals. Daniel Sollenberger, a DNR senior wildlife biologist, wrote in that 2022 article: “While at least one of the state’s six species of venomous snakes could be found in each county in the state, seldom are they the most common species encountered.” The statement describes the older count and is not a current tally of Georgia’s venomous snakes.

Georgia rattlesnakes compared

Species Size and build Pattern and tail Georgia range and habitat
Eastern diamondback (Crotalus adamanteus) Large, heavy-bodied; known to reach 78 inches (6.5 feet), according to Georgia DNR’s undated fact sheet accessed October 13, 2026. Dark brown diamonds edged in yellow; a dark eye stripe bordered in yellow; hollow keratin rattle segments. Coastal Plain south of the Fall Line; open longleaf pine woods, some open pine-hardwood areas, marshes and dunes.
Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) Heavy-bodied; overall color and pattern vary substantially. Butterfly-shaped saddles transition into bands; tail is solid black. Southern canebrake forms may show bold chevrons and a reddish-orange stripe down the back. Most of Georgia except a few locations in the extreme southwest; wooded, relatively undisturbed mixed pine-hardwood forests.
Pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius) Smallest Georgia rattlesnake; adults usually 16–21 inches, according to Georgia DNR’s undated fact sheet accessed October 13, 2026. Dark spots along the back; very small rattle that may sound faint. Carolina subspecies mainly in the eastern Piedmont and Mountain regions; Dusky subspecies in the lower Coastal Plain, with broad gaps in known range; pine woods, sandhills, scrub and pine-hickory forest.

These field marks are broad guides, not a license to approach a snake. Colors fade, patterns vary and viewing conditions can be poor. A suspected rattlesnake should be treated as potentially dangerous until it has moved away or a qualified professional has identified it from a safe distance.

Eastern diamondback rattlesnake

How to recognize it

The eastern diamondback is Georgia’s biggest rattlesnake and has a notably thick body. Its back carries dark brown diamond shapes outlined in yellow, while a dark stripe through the eye is bordered by yellow. The tail ends in hollow, interlocking keratin segments that produce the rattle. A very large snake with strong diamonds and a yellow-edged eye stripe in the Coastal Plain is consistent with an eastern diamondback, but distance and professional confirmation still matter.

Where it lives in Georgia

In Georgia, eastern diamondbacks are associated with the Coastal Plain south of the Fall Line. Their favored setting is open longleaf pine woodland. They may also occur in open pine-hardwood habitat and in coastal environments such as marshes and dunes. Seeing one in a coastal or lower-plain landscape fits its documented distribution; it does not make every large patterned snake in that region an eastern diamondback.

Timber rattlesnake and canebrake forms

Pattern, tail and color

Timber rattlesnakes are heavy-bodied, but their appearance is variable. The dorsal pattern starts with butterfly-shaped saddles and transitions toward bands along the body. The tail is solid black, a useful feature when it can be seen without getting closer. Southern populations commonly called canebrake rattlesnakes may display high-contrast chevrons and a reddish-orange stripe along the back. Background colors differ among individuals, so color alone is not a dependable identification test.

Distribution and habitat

The species occurs across most of Georgia, with a few gaps in the extreme southwest. It favors wooded, relatively undisturbed places, especially mixed pine-hardwood forests. That broad distribution means a timber rattlesnake is the species a hiker, landowner or pet owner is more likely to consider in many inland parts of the state than an eastern diamondback. Range is only a first filter: a snake’s exact identity still depends on several traits viewed together.

Pygmy rattlesnake

Why its size and rattle can mislead people

Pygmy rattlesnakes are Georgia’s smallest rattlesnakes. Adults usually measure 16–21 inches. Their backs carry rows of dark spots, and the rattle is so small that its sound may be faint or difficult to hear. Do not use a weak buzz, a missing audible rattle or a short body as proof that a snake is harmless. A small snake can still deliver venom, and a rattle may be obscured by vegetation, wind or distance.

Regional forms and habitats

The Carolina subspecies is found mainly in the eastern Piedmont and Mountain regions. The Dusky subspecies occurs in the lower Coastal Plain, although known records have wide gaps. Pygmy rattlesnakes use several habitat types, including pine woods, sandhills, scrub and pine-hickory forest. Because their distribution is patchy, a map or habitat match can support an identification but cannot replace a safe visual assessment.

How to distinguish the three without getting close

Start with overall size

  • A very large, heavy snake—potentially up to 78 inches according to Georgia DNR—is consistent with an eastern diamondback.
  • A heavy-bodied snake of variable color in a wooded inland setting may be a timber rattlesnake.
  • A much smaller adult, usually 16–21 inches, suggests a pygmy rattlesnake, but small size is not a reason to approach.

Check the pattern only from a safe distance

  • Yellow-edged dark diamonds point toward an eastern diamondback.
  • Butterfly-shaped saddles changing into bands point toward a timber rattlesnake; a solid-black tail strengthens that impression.
  • Dark dorsal spots and a tiny rattle fit a pygmy rattlesnake.

Use geography as supporting evidence

Coastal Plain habitat south of the Fall Line raises the possibility of an eastern diamondback. Most wooded regions of Georgia can support timber rattlesnakes, while pygmy records are concentrated in the eastern Piedmont, mountains and lower Coastal Plain. None of these regional clues is conclusive, and Georgia DNR cautions that some harmless snakes resemble venomous species.

Do not rely on head shape

Head shape is not a reliable venom test. Harmless snakes can flatten or broaden the head when alarmed, making a profile look more triangular. Color, eye shape and a single photograph can also mislead. If certainty matters—for example, a snake is beside a doorway, kennel or play area—keep people and pets away and contact a qualified wildlife professional rather than trying to improve the view.

What to do when you encounter a rattlesnake

  1. Stop and create space. Do not move toward the snake for a photograph, identification or attempt at removal. Back away slowly while keeping people and pets out of its path.
  2. Do not handle or corner it. Georgia DNR notes that most bites occur when snakes are cornered or captured while defending themselves. Never pick up a rattlesnake, even if it appears dead; reflex movement can still be dangerous.
  3. Let it leave when possible. Give the snake an unobstructed route away from the area. Do not throw objects, poke it with a stick or block its retreat.
  4. Use professional removal for an immediate hazard. If a clearly identified venomous snake threatens people or pets and cannot safely move away, use Georgia’s wildlife-conflict resource to locate a private wildlife removal specialist. DNR recommends this approach rather than improvised handling.
  5. If a bite occurs, treat it as an emergency. Move away from the snake, call emergency services and seek immediate medical care. Do not try to capture the snake for identification; a distant description or photograph taken without approaching is safer.

Reducing the chance of snakes around a home

Snake sightings often increase where prey animals and cover are plentiful. Georgia DNR recommends removing brush, log piles and other habitat features that attract rodents and other prey. Keep grass and vegetation managed near frequently used paths, and inspect areas where debris accumulates.

Seal gaps and other building entry points so snakes and rodents cannot move into crawl spaces, sheds or garages. Reducing rodent access removes a food source that can draw snakes toward buildings. These measures lower the appeal of a property but cannot guarantee that a wild snake will never pass through.

Do not use gasoline, poisons or improvised traps, and do not kill snakes. Such methods can injure people, pets and wildlife, and a cornered snake is more likely to defend itself. A professional can advise on lawful, humane removal when a clearly identified venomous snake creates a genuine danger.

Why a missing rattle sound proves nothing

Rattles are made of hollow keratin segments, but their size and condition differ among species and individuals. The pygmy rattlesnake’s rattle is especially small and may sound faint. Wind, thick vegetation, running water, distance and background noise can mask any warning. Conversely, a sound does not tell you how close the snake is or whether it has seen you. Treat visual uncertainty and silence alike: stop, increase distance and leave the area.

Further identification help

Georgia DNR’s live snake-information page and its fact sheets for eastern diamondback, timber and pygmy rattlesnakes provide the state-specific distribution and field information summarized here. DNR also identifies Amphibians and Reptiles of Georgia, published by the University of Georgia Press, as a comprehensive reference.
