What Can Beat a Great White Shark? The Evidence for Orcas and Other Contenders

Orcas are the only firmly documented great-white killers. Here is what the South African, California and Australian records show, why sperm whales remain speculative, and how shark size and group hunting change the matchup.

Killer whales (orcas) are the only animals with well-documented kills of great white sharks. Researchers have recorded orca predation in South Africa and California, and a 2025 Australian study identified killer-whale DNA in a characteristic wound on a white-shark carcass. That proves orcas can kill great whites; it does not establish that every orca wins every encounter, or that a universal one-on-one matchup has been tested.

What “beating” a great white shark actually means

A great white shark is itself a large apex predator. It can attack seals, sea lions, dolphins and other sharks, but being a powerful predator does not make it invulnerable. In this article, “beating” means the strongest measurable outcome: killing a white shark. Driving sharks from a feeding area is a different result, and a hypothetical fight cannot be assigned a reliable winner without evidence from a specific encounter.

The available records vary in quality. A direct observation or a carcass with diagnostic genetic evidence is stronger than an inference based on body size, teeth or the fact that one animal attacks another large species. The most useful comparison therefore asks five questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Was a white-shark kill directly observed or supported by physical evidence?
  • Did one animal act alone, or did a group coordinate the attack?
  • Was the shark an adult, a juvenile or an unknown size?
  • Was the documented result a kill, an injury, a failed attack or displacement?
  • Where and under what conditions did the encounter occur?

On those standards, the evidence supports one established answer: killer whales.

Killer whales: the documented great-white killer

Mossel Bay, South Africa, May 2022

The clearest modern observation comes from Mossel Bay. A peer-reviewed study by Towner, Kock, Stopforth, Hurwitz and Elwen, published in Ecology in 2023, analyzed drone footage, helicopter observations and video recorded during events on May 16, 2022.

The footage showed a group of five killer whales. One whale brought an estimated 3-metre white shark to the surface. The shark appeared dead, and the whale bit near the pectoral fins. Additional interactions were recorded in the same area. The authors concluded that at least two, and possibly three, white sharks were killed during events lasting approximately 71 minutes.

That conclusion is powerful because it combines direct observation with repeated activity at one location. It is still an event record, not a worldwide estimate of how often orcas kill white sharks. The number of whales, the local geography, the sharks’ sizes and the circumstances of that day cannot be generalized into a guaranteed result for every encounter.

The observed handling and the researchers’ interpretation

The study describes an attempted roll or inversion of a shark and a bite into the abdomen behind the pectoral fins. The handling is directly observed. The researchers interpret it as a tactic consistent with inducing tonic immobility, a temporary state in which a shark becomes unusually still when inverted. That interpretation explains how an orca might control a dangerous animal, but it should not be presented as a universally proven sequence used in every attack.

Southeast Farallon Islands, California, 1997

Orca predation on white sharks was documented earlier in California. A study by Jorgensen and colleagues, published in Scientific Reports in 2019, reports a white shark killed and partially consumed by transient killer whales near the Southeast Farallon Islands in 1997. The whales consumed the shark’s liver.

The California work also examined what happened to the local white-shark population after the interaction. White sharks redistributed away from the area, changing the pressure they normally placed on elephant seals. This is important ecological evidence: an orca encounter can alter where sharks forage even when the observation is not a head-to-head contest involving every shark in the region.

Genetic evidence from Australia

A 2025 study by Reeves and colleagues, “Genetic Evidence of Killer Whale Predation on White Sharks in Australia,” adds a different type of confirmation. Researchers found killer-whale DNA in a bite wound on a white-shark carcass. The wound pattern was characteristic of liver-extraction predation.

The same carcass contained broadnose sevengill shark genetic material in other wounds. That finding is consistent with scavenging after the shark had been killed; it does not show that a sevengill shark killed the white shark. Separating the original predator from later scavengers is essential when interpreting carcass evidence.

How orcas can overcome a great white’s defenses

These observations do not provide a controlled laboratory comparison, but they show why the matchup can favor orcas under some conditions.

Size and leverage

Killer whales are much larger and heavier than the typical white shark. Their bodies, jaws and flukes provide leverage that can control a shark during close contact. Size alone is not proof of a kill, but in the documented attacks it is part of a broader combination of strength, coordination and experience.

Coordinated group hunting

The South African event involved five killer whales, not a solitary animal. Group hunting allows whales to approach from several directions, distract the shark and control its movement. A group result should therefore not be rewritten as evidence that one orca always defeats one adult great white.

Targeting vulnerable anatomy

The recorded bites near the pectoral region and behind the pectoral fins, together with the liver-extraction pattern reported in California and Australia, indicate attacks aimed at disabling or gaining access to high-value tissue. The exact sequence can vary, and the studies do not establish a single fixed technique used by all killer-whale populations.

Predator learning and local behavior

Killer whales are socially complex predators whose hunting methods can be learned within family groups. The cited studies document outcomes and describe likely tactics, but they do not establish how widespread a particular white-shark hunting tradition is among orca populations worldwide.

What happened to the sharks after Mossel Bay?

The South African study recorded a sharp local change after the predation events. Cage-diving operators observed zero white sharks on trips for 45 days, and the first shark was seen again on July 1, 2022. Drone observations and other available surveys likewise recorded a rapid decline in sightings.

This is evidence of local disappearance or redistribution after an orca encounter, not proof that all surviving sharks flee permanently or that the species was removed from the region. The California study also analyzed redistribution following an orca interaction, showing that predator presence can change shark behavior and the distribution of other prey. Neither study supplies a global flight rule or a population-wide mortality rate.

Other animals often proposed as great-white challengers

Sperm whales: formidable, but not a documented answer

Sperm whales attract attention because they are enormous toothed whales and can themselves be attacked by killer whales. Pitman and colleagues reported approximately 35 killer whales attacking a pod of nine sperm whales off central California in October 1997. That observation demonstrates that orcas can confront very large marine mammals; it does not demonstrate that an individual sperm whale can kill or reliably defeat a great white shark.

No comparable, well-documented sperm-whale attack on a white shark is established in the evidence considered here. A sperm whale’s mass and teeth make it a plausible subject for speculation, but plausibility is not a recorded outcome.

Broadnose sevengill sharks: scavengers in the Australian record

Broadnose sevengill shark DNA was detected in wounds on the Australian carcass, but the evidence points to post-kill scavenging. The killer-whale DNA and characteristic wound identify the likely predator responsible for the fatal attack. The sevengill finding should not be converted into a claim that sevengill sharks beat great whites.

Other large predators

Large sharks, dolphins, pinnipeds and toothed whales may injure a white shark or compete with it for food. The material available here does not establish another species as a reliable killer of adult great whites. Reports that an animal has large teeth, tusks, a heavy body or a history of attacking a different species are not substitutes for a documented white-shark kill.

How large is a great white shark?

Size claims affect any discussion of a “fight.” The 2021 COSEWIC assessment for the Atlantic population says the maximum size of Carcharodon carcharias remains unknown. Growth studies estimate total lengths of roughly 5–6 metres, while reports above 7 metres have not been verified. The largest verified specimen cited in that assessment was 5.6 metres, caught in Atlantic Canada in 1983.

Those figures require careful wording. The assessment concerns the Atlantic population but summarizes broader size literature; it does not settle the maximum size of every population. An unverified seven-metre report should not be used as a measured fact, and a single verified 5.6-metre specimen should not be treated as the universal limit.

Evidence comparison

Animal or claim Evidence involving a white shark Observed outcome What can responsibly be concluded
Killer whales in Mossel Bay, South Africa Drone, helicopter and video observations on May 16, 2022; group of five whales At least two, possibly three, sharks killed over approximately 71 minutes Direct evidence that orcas can kill white sharks; event-specific, not a universal win rate
Transient killer whales near California’s Southeast Farallon Islands 1997 observation analyzed by Jorgensen et al. (2019) White shark killed and partially consumed; liver eaten Independent regional record of orca predation and shark redistribution
Killer whales in Australia 2025 carcass analysis found killer-whale DNA in a characteristic wound Genetic evidence supports an orca kill; sevengill DNA indicates later scavenging Physical evidence confirms the predator distinction
Sperm whales No established white-shark kill in the cited evidence Not stated Large and potentially formidable, but speculative as a great-white killer
Broadnose sevengill sharks DNA found in other wounds on an Australian carcass Consistent with post-kill scavenging Not evidence that a sevengill killed the white shark

What a hypothetical encounter would still depend on

Even with the orca records, no study cited here calculates a universal one-on-one probability. A real encounter could change with several variables:

  • Group versus individual: five whales coordinating an attack is not equivalent to one whale acting alone.
  • Shark size and life stage: a juvenile or subadult presents a different risk from a large mature shark.
  • Location: shallow water, open ocean, kelp habitat and a confined bay offer different maneuvering conditions.
  • Surprise and initiative: which predator detects the other first can determine whether the interaction becomes an attack at all.
  • Experience: learned hunting behavior may differ among orca communities.
  • Objective: a whale may seek the liver, displace a shark from feeding grounds or abandon an attack rather than pursue a prolonged fight.

These factors explain why “orcas can kill great whites” is defensible while “an orca always beats a great white” is not.

How to judge new claims

When a video, headline or social-media post names a new great-white challenger, check the evidence in this order:

  1. Look for a named scientific paper, agency report or identifiable observation rather than an unattributed story.
  2. Determine whether the shark was seen alive during the attack, found dead afterward, or merely absent from an area.
  3. Check whether the evidence identifies the killer through footage, bite morphology, genetics or only circumstantial clues.
  4. Separate a coordinated group attack from an individual animal’s ability.
  5. Record the shark’s measured or estimated size, the date and the location.
  6. Distinguish a kill from displacement, injury, scavenging or an unsuccessful encounter.

Applying those checks to the documented cases leaves killer whales as the only firmly evidenced answer in this set of records. Other animals may be capable in theory, but capability has not been demonstrated to the same standard.
