Catnip can be a source of optional scent enrichment for cats, but the available evidence does not establish seven health benefits or show that it reliably treats anxiety, pain, illness, or other conditions. Some cats respond with play or stimulation, some may become sedated, and others show no obvious reaction. Treat catnip as an individual preference—not a medical treatment or guaranteed way to calm a cat.
What benefits of catnip are actually supported?
The evidence supports a behavioral response to catnip scent in some cats, which may make it useful as optional olfactory enrichment. That is different from demonstrating a clinical health benefit: a cat sniffing, rolling, or playing does not show that catnip has treated a disease or improved a measured health outcome.

A 2017 study tested catnip and other plant materials with 100 domestic cats. Approximately one in three did not respond to catnip. The authors described the plants as promising olfactory enrichment and called for further study of welfare, distress, training, and other outcomes; the study does not establish medical benefits for household cats. Does catnip calm cats or reduce stress?
Some cats may appear relaxed or sedated after exposure, while others become stimulated. Neither response proves that catnip reliably reduces anxiety or stress. In a small randomized, blinded study published online in 2025, researchers tested eight healthy cats in a veterinary examination setting after transport and handling. Catnip and feline facial pheromone did not produce significant changes in clinical or behavioral parameters compared with saline placebo. Why might a cat ignore catnip?
Not all cats respond to catnip. In the 2017 study, about one-third of the 100 cats tested did not show a response. That is a study-specific finding, not a prediction for any particular cat.
Other plant scents may interest some cats that ignore catnip. In the same study, nearly 80% responded to silver vine, while about half responded to Tatarian honeysuckle and valerian root. Among cats that did not respond to catnip, nearly 75% responded to silver vine. These proportions describe the study group; they do not guarantee a reaction or establish that one plant is therapeutically better. Is catnip safe for cats?
Catnip is not universally harmless. The ASPCA identifies catnip as Nepeta cataria, names nepetalactone as its toxic principle, and lists vomiting and diarrhea among possible signs. It also notes that cats may become sedated or stimulated. The ASPCA information is a safety caution, not a quantified dose-response study, so it does not establish a therapeutic dose. If your cat develops vomiting, diarrhea, or another concerning reaction after exposure, stop offering the plant and contact your veterinarian for advice. Do not use catnip in place of veterinary care for a health or behavior problem.

How to offer catnip as enrichment
- Offer it as an optional scent experience. Use a catnip product or plant form appropriate for your cat, without assuming it will have an effect.
- Watch your cat’s response. Cats may show interest, become active, appear sedated, or ignore it. Let the individual response guide whether you offer it again.
- Stop if you see an adverse reaction. Vomiting and diarrhea are among the possible signs the ASPCA associates with catnip.
- Ask your veterinarian about health concerns. Catnip has not been established here as a treatment for anxiety, pain, illness, or other clinical conditions.
