In January 2025, an estimated 30,000 fish were found dead along about nine kilometres of coast near Gnoorea Point, roughly 50 kilometres south-west of Karratha. Western Australian authorities initially investigated several possible causes; by 28 January, they said a marine heatwave was the most likely explanation. That was an agency assessment, not definitive proof of the mechanism behind every fish death.
Where and when were the fish found?
The deaths were reported in mid-January 2025 at Gnoorea Beach and nearby coastline, close to Gnoorea Point Campground. A separate report noted fish at the mouth of the Yanyare River. The estimate of about 30,000 fish across roughly nine kilometres came from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) reporting; it was not a count of every affected fish. ABC News reported the scale and location.

Initial investigation: samples and competing possibilities
DPIRD officers collected fish and water samples to investigate possible environmental or biological contributors. On 16 January, laboratory results were still pending. Public speculation at the time included a chemical spill and unusually hot water, and officials said they would consider potential causes. The early reports did not establish either explanation. ABC’s 16 January update described the continuing investigation and clean-up.

Late-January assessment: marine heatwave most likely
By 28 January, authorities identified a marine heatwave as the most likely cause. DPIRD spokesman Nathan Harrison said, “It is possible that prolonged thermal stress due to the ocean conditions is associated with the fish kill.” The wording is cautious: it links heat stress with the deaths as a possible explanation rather than establishing a single, confirmed cause. ABC reported the late-January assessment.
ABC reported that sea-surface temperatures in the north-coast bioregion were 4–5°C above the long-term average in late January 2025. That is a regional comparison for that period, not a measurement taken at every part of the affected beach. Harrison also said that warmer ocean conditions off Western Australia during 2024 had preconditioned a high risk of a summer marine heatwave, when water temperatures naturally rise and peak. What does climate change attribution say—and not say?
A Climate Central analysis reported by The Guardian on 4 February 2025 used satellite data and 13 climate models. It estimated that climate change made the marine heatwave 20 times more likely overall, and made its most affected period in November 100 times more likely. Those estimates concern the likelihood of the heatwave. They do not calculate the probability that climate change directly caused this specific fish kill, nor do they identify the precise mechanism that killed each fish. What was the advice about swimming, fishing and pets?
During the January 2025 response, health authorities advised people to avoid swimming and fishing in surrounding areas because of possible bacteria and odours. People were also told to avoid touching dead fish, keep pets and other animals away from decomposing remains, and not use the fish as bait or eat them. These were warnings reported at the time, not confirmation of a current restriction. ABC’s contemporaneous report included the safety advice.
