What happened at Mullaloo Beach on New Year’s Eve?
Drone operator Curtis Ramsay captured footage of a shark swimming near the shore at Mullaloo Beach on 31 December 2023. People were at the beach watching the final sunset of the year. PerthNow reported the footage on 2 January 2024 and identified the shark as a tiger shark known locally as Trevor or Big T. PerthNow’s report described it as “just meters away,” but did not state a precise distance.

How big was Trevor, and was it definitely the same shark?
The video caption cited by PerthNow gave an approximate size of 2.5 metres. That is a reported estimate, not an independently verified measurement. PerthNow also said the shark had been recorded at Mullaloo on multiple occasions, including in December 2023. The report does not explain how the shark was identified as the same individual, so “Trevor” is the local name used in the coverage rather than a scientifically confirmed identification.

No. The footage is from 31 December 2023, and the report was published on 2 January 2024. It does not establish current shark activity or the precise response authorities took at the time. For present conditions, check SharkSmart WA alerts and Surf Life Saving WA information, and follow directions from lifeguards or surf lifesavers at the beach.

What should beachgoers do if a shark is seen?
Surf Life Saving WA advises checking SharkSmart and SLSWA alerts before entering the water, swimming close to shore between the flags at patrolled beaches, avoiding aquatic activity at dawn and dusk, and swimming with others. If a shark is seen, leave the water quickly and calmly and follow official directions. Its guidance says: “Swim close to shore and between the flags at patrolled beaches.” See Surf Life Saving WA’s shark safety advice.
How local alerts work at Mullaloo
Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club says its primary patrol area is within 400 metres of the club; that describes the patrol area, not the distance of the 2023 shark sighting. In a notice dated 16 October 2025, the club said the local warning system is managed by SLSWA and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). It can activate automatically following a tagged-shark detection or manually after a confirmed sighting reported by authorised officers. When the alarm sounds, the club says: “Please leave the water immediately and follow directions from lifeguards or surf lifesavers on patrol.” The notice says the system remains active for at least an hour after a detection. Read the club’s shark warning system notice.

- A 2–3 metre shark and/or schooling sharks within 500 metres.
- For a shark under 2 metres, the procedure advises the public while maintaining normal operations.
These are general procedures; they do not confirm what action authorities took during the December 2023 sighting.
