Some cleaning products can seriously harm cats, especially concentrated corrosives, laundry products, and wet residues a cat can lick or walk through. But the category name alone does not determine danger: the ingredient, concentration, amount, route of exposure, and whether the product was used as directed all matter. ASPCA Poison Control says most cleaning products are safe around dogs and cats when used according to label directions. This is practical guidance from ASPCA Poison Control, not a veterinary-approved ranking of eight products.
Which cleaning products can harm cats?
These eight categories deserve careful handling because of their ingredients or the way cats may encounter them. They are not an official ranking, and a product in a category is not automatically dangerous when used exactly as directed.

1. Undiluted or concentrated bleach
Swallowing undiluted bleach can injure a cat’s mouth and esophagus, particularly when the product is highly concentrated or has a high pH. ASPCA says diluted bleach may be used on toys and kennels if it is thoroughly rinsed and the odor has dissipated before a pet returns. Those conditions do not make concentrated bleach safe to lick or drink. ASPCA Poison Control’s household-products guide
2. Toilet bowl cleaners
Some toilet cleaners contain strong acids or alkalis. Concentrated exposure can burn tissue in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. Keep cats out of the bathroom while a cleaner is being used and stored, and prevent access to treated water or wet surfaces.

3. Drain cleaners
Drain products may also contain strong acids or alkalis. A concentrated corrosive exposure can cause serious tissue damage; do not wait for symptoms if you suspect a cat has swallowed one. ASPCA discusses toilet and drain cleaners among household corrosives in its September 17, 2026 guidance.
4. Liquid laundry detergent
Liquid detergent can irritate the mouth and throat and cause gastrointestinal upset if licked or swallowed. Keep detergent away from curious cats, clean spills promptly, and do not let a cat walk through or groom residue from a contaminated surface or coat.

5. Laundry detergent pods
Pods contain concentrated detergent in a dissolvable package that can be punctured or chewed. In addition to mouth and throat irritation and stomach upset, vomiting after pod exposure can allow detergent to enter the lungs and cause severe pneumonia. ASPCA has specifically warned about this risk in its laundry pod alert.
6. Dryer sheets
Many dryer sheets contain cationic detergents, which can cause severe chemical burns and ulcers in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. A swallowed sheet can also lodge in the gastrointestinal tract and cause an obstruction. Keep used as well as unused sheets out of reach.

- DISINFECTING HYPOCHLOROUS; Nature's germ killer made in the USA
7. Fabric softeners
Some fabric softeners contain cationic detergents with the same potential for severe burns and ulcers. Cats may be especially sensitive to these ingredients. Avoid access to liquid spills, concentrated products, and wet laundry that may carry residue.
8. Enzyme-based cleaners
ASPCA says enzyme cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset. Let treated areas dry before allowing cats back, and follow the product label rather than assuming that “enzyme-based” means harmless in every formulation or exposure.

Why the same cleaner can pose different levels of risk
Risk depends on more than a product’s name. A diluted cleaner used as directed and allowed to dry is a different exposure from a cat swallowing concentrate. Corrosive acids and alkalis can burn tissue; cationic detergents in some laundry products can cause burns and ulcers; other products may mainly irritate the stomach. The route matters too: swallowing, licking residue from fur, walking over a wet surface, or inhaling fumes are not interchangeable exposures. ASPCA’s household-products guidance and corrosive-products guidance explain these distinctions.
Common cleaning products that are not automatically toxic
Vinegar and water
Vinegar is acidic and can irritate a cat or upset the stomach, but ASPCA says a diluted vinegar-and-water solution is not generally an issue when it is rinsed and allowed to dry. This is not a reason to let a cat drink it or lick a wet surface.

Carpet fresheners and shampoos
ASPCA’s 2020 guidance says carpet fresheners used properly should not cause significant harm; powder contact may cause minor skin irritation, and a small ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. Most carpet shampoos can be used in homes with pets if the carpet is dry before cats return. ASPCA’s household cleaning-agent guidance
Essential-oil cleaners and fragrances
Do not treat every fragranced product as if it contains toxic essential oils. However, ASPCA notes that cats are especially sensitive to essential oils; significant ingestion or exposure can cause gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression, or liver damage, and inhalation may carry an aspiration-pneumonia risk. The potential effects vary by oil. Keep cats away from essential-oil products and follow the label’s precautions.

Watch for drooling, vomiting, mouth ulcers, trouble swallowing, reduced appetite, lethargy, weakness, poor coordination, or breathing difficulty. Signs may be delayed, so a cat that seems normal after a suspected corrosive ingestion still needs prompt veterinary attention. Do not wait for symptoms to appear before seeking advice.

- For suspected ingestion of a corrosive cleaner, seek veterinary care immediately. ASPCA Poison Control says to get care even if the pet appears normal because clinical effects can be delayed. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to; vomiting corrosives can cause further injury. Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 for guidance. ASPCA’s corrosive-products guidance
- For life-threatening signs, go to an emergency veterinary hospital now. Breathing trouble, seizures, unconsciousness, or unresponsiveness call for immediate hospital care. Bring the product packaging so the veterinary team can identify the ingredients. ASPCA lists its contact options at ASPCA Poison Control.
- If a product is on the coat or skin, get substance-specific advice. Decontamination depends on what the cat contacted. ASPCA’s home decontamination guidance says mild liquid dish soap—not dishwasher detergent—can remove oily or chemical residue more effectively than dog or human shampoo. This is external-cleanup guidance, not a treatment for ingestion; contact a veterinarian promptly if toxicity or ingestion is a concern. ASPCA’s decontamination guidance
How to reduce the risk during cleaning
- Store cleaning products and laundry supplies securely, including pods and used dryer sheets.
- Follow each product’s label directions and clean spills promptly.
- Keep cats away while products are being applied; ventilate where fumes may irritate.
- Do not let cats onto treated surfaces until they are dry. For products requiring rinsing, rinse as directed before allowing access.
- Do not assume a product is safe because it is diluted, fragranced, or marketed as enzyme-based; use the label and exposure circumstances to guide precautions.
ASPCA’s published guidance does not establish a cat-specific exposure rate for each cleaner category, so a percentage or ranking would be misleading. For suspected exposure, use the product label and professional veterinary or poison-control advice rather than relying on a generalized list.
