What Do Tortoises Eat? A Practical Guide to a Healthy Diet

Tortoises do not share one diet. This practical guide explains species-specific staples, safe plants, fruit and spinach cautions, calcium, UVB, water and when to call a reptile veterinarian.

The right tortoise diet depends on the species. Mediterranean tortoises generally need a varied, weed-heavy menu; grazing species such as Sulcata and leopard tortoises need grasses and hay as their foundation; tropical species, including red-footed tortoises, have different requirements and may use fruit or animal protein in carefully managed amounts. Identify the species first, then build meals around its natural feeding pattern, provide appropriate calcium and UVB, and keep fresh water available.

Why there is no single tortoise diet

“Tortoise” describes many species with different digestive systems and natural habitats. A plant-eating Mediterranean tortoise is not fed in the same way as a grassland grazer, and neither should automatically receive the diet of a tropical red-footed tortoise. The most serious feeding mistakes happen when an owner applies a safe food list from one group to another.

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) care sheets reviewed in 2024 describe Mediterranean tortoises as animals whose captive diet should be dominated by suitable weeds and broadleaf plants. Its Sulcata and leopard guidance instead emphasizes grasses and hay. The Tortoise Table notes that tropical tortoises such as red-footed tortoises can have different dietary patterns, including species-specific fruit guidance. Use those distinctions as the starting point rather than looking for a universal percentage, menu, or pellet.

Start by identifying your tortoise

Before changing food, confirm the species and, when possible, the animal’s age, sex, health history and current enclosure conditions. Common names are unreliable: “spotted,” “Russian,” “Greek,” “red-footed” and “desert” can refer to animals with very different needs, while shops sometimes use broad or inaccurate labels.

Information to gather

  • The scientific name on the purchase, adoption or veterinary paperwork.
  • The source and locality of the tortoise, if known.
  • Current weight, shell length and an estimate of age.
  • Whether it is eating, defecating and growing normally.
  • The UVB lamp type, age, distance and daily operating schedule.
  • Any previous diagnosis, medication or supplement use.

If the species is uncertain, take clear photographs and the paperwork to a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. Do not use a generic “tortoise diet” while waiting for identification if the animal is young, ill, not eating or showing a soft shell, swollen limbs, weakness or difficulty walking.

Species-based diet comparison

Group Natural feeding pattern Captive staple Fruit guidance Main safety issue
Mediterranean tortoises Browsers and weed eaters A varied selection of safe weeds and broadleaf plants; weeds should make up the majority of the diet under the RVC Mediterranean guidance Avoid fruit under the cited RVC guidance Use only correctly identified plants free from pesticide and fertilizer exposure
Sulcata tortoises Grassland grazers Grasses and hay as the main base, with weeds and other suitable vegetation making up the rest Do not use Mediterranean fruit advice as a reason to add fruit; follow species-specific veterinary guidance Replacing the grass-and-hay base with rich or sugary foods
Leopard tortoises Grassland grazers Grasses and hay as the main base, plus appropriate weeds and vegetation The RVC leopard guidance says to avoid fruit Feeding a weed-only menu that omits the grazing staple
Tropical species, including red-footed tortoises Different from Mediterranean and strict grass-grazing species Species-specific plant foods; some plans may include fruit and limited animal protein May be part of a balanced diet for some tropical species, but not for all tortoises Generalizing red-footed guidance to Mediterranean, Sulcata or leopard tortoises

This table is a decision framework, not a substitute for a veterinary plan. Nutritional requirements are not fully characterized for every tortoise, and the Tortoise Table notes that a plant’s nutrient and toxicity profile can change with growing conditions.

What Mediterranean tortoises should eat

For Mediterranean species, variety within the safe-plant category matters. The RVC says weeds should form the majority of the captive diet. Suitable examples named in its care sheet include dandelions, sow thistles, milk thistle, plantains, chickweed and bindweed. It also lists sedum, hibiscus, nasturtium and honeysuckle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a mixed plant selection

Offer several identified plants rather than feeding one leaf every day. A rotation might combine dandelion, plantain and chickweed on one day, then add sow thistle, sedum or a pesticide-free hibiscus flower on another. The point is to vary the menu while keeping every item within the species’ safe-food guidance. Remove wilted or soiled food and replace it with fresh material.

When suitable weeds are unavailable, the RVC Mediterranean sheet permits a mixture of vegetables and salad as a fallback. It presents this as a practical alternative, not evidence that supermarket greens are automatically nutritionally complete. Ask a reptile veterinarian how to balance that substitute for your individual tortoise, especially if it is the main food for more than a short period.

Foods to leave out for Mediterranean tortoises

Do not add fruit to a Mediterranean tortoise’s routine under the RVC guidance. A sweet food that is appropriate for a tropical species is not automatically appropriate for a Mediterranean animal. Spinach is also a poor choice: the Tortoise Table advises against it because its oxalic acid can bind calcium and reduce the calcium available to the tortoise.

What Sulcata and leopard tortoises should eat

Sulcata and leopard tortoises are grazers. The RVC guidance for both groups puts grasses and hay at the center of the diet, with weeds and other suitable vegetation making up the remainder. This is a fundamental difference from a Mediterranean weed-heavy plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make grass and hay the foundation

Provide clean, pesticide-free grasses and suitable hay as the dependable base. Hay can be offered dry and protected from urine, feces and dampness; replace it when it becomes moldy, wet or contaminated. Fresh grass should come from an area that has not been treated with herbicide, pesticide or fertilizer and has not been exposed to vehicle exhaust, dog waste or other contaminants.

Add identified weeds and other appropriate vegetation for variety, but do not let those extras displace the grazing staple. A Sulcata or leopard tortoise eating a salad-heavy menu can appear to be eating well while missing the rough, fibrous foods its digestive system is adapted to handle.

Fruit and rich foods

The RVC leopard guidance says to avoid fruit. For Sulcata tortoises, do not infer permission from advice written for tropical species; use a reptile veterinarian’s species-specific plan instead. Avoid turning occasional treats into a routine, and never use fruit to compensate for a missing grass-and-hay supply.

How tropical tortoise diets differ

Tropical tortoises do not share one uniform diet. The Tortoise Table contrasts Mediterranean and grazing tortoises with tropical species such as red-footed tortoises, which may include fruit and animal protein in a more naturally balanced diet. That distinction is a warning to seek a species-specific plan, not a blanket recommendation to feed fruit or meat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Red-footed tortoises

Some red-footed feeding plans include fruit and limited animal protein alongside plant foods. The exact balance depends on the species, locality, age, health and husbandry. Do not transfer a red-footed menu to a Mediterranean, Sulcata or leopard tortoise, and do not assume every tropical species has the same allowances.

When advice conflicts

If two care sheets disagree, check whether they describe different species, life stages or climates. Then ask a reptile veterinarian to reconcile the recommendations with your tortoise’s enclosure, UVB exposure and health. Published nutritional information is incomplete, so confident-looking universal rules are less reliable than a plan tied to a correctly identified animal.

A practical feeding routine

The following process helps turn species guidance into a safe routine without pretending that every tortoise needs the same portion or schedule.

  1. Confirm the species. Record the scientific name or have a reptile veterinarian identify the animal.
  2. Choose the staple. Use safe weeds and broadleaf plants for Mediterranean tortoises; grasses and hay for Sulcata and leopard tortoises; follow a tropical species plan for red-footed and other tropical animals.
  3. Assemble variety. Select several plants that are positively identified as suitable. Rotate them instead of relying on one plant.
  4. Inspect the source. Reject anything from an area treated with pesticide or fertilizer, exposed to traffic or contaminated by animal waste.
  5. Wash and prepare food. Remove dirt and damaged portions, then serve clean pieces in a shallow dish or on a clean feeding surface. Do not leave decomposing food in the enclosure.
  6. Observe the tortoise. Note appetite, feces, activity and changes in shell or limbs. A sudden change can indicate illness, unsuitable temperature or a dietary problem.
  7. Review the plan. Reassess supplements, UVB equipment and food variety with a reptile veterinarian, particularly after growth, illness or an enclosure change.

Plant safety: identify before you feed

Never offer an unfamiliar plant because it “looks like” a known weed. The Tortoise Table warns that nutrient and toxicity levels vary with growing conditions, and its plant database’s safety labels depend on accurate identification. Learn the plant’s full name and verify that it is suitable for your tortoise’s species.

Do not collect from treated areas

  • Lawns, gardens or fields treated with pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer or slug-control products.
  • Road verges and industrial areas where dust and vehicle contamination may be present.
  • Places used by dogs, cats or livestock where feces or urine can contaminate leaves.
  • Areas where you cannot establish what chemicals were used or when.

Growing your own plants can make the source easier to control, but it does not remove the need for correct identification. Seeds, soil amendments and neighboring spray drift can still matter.

Foods and feeding practices that need special caution

Fruit

Fruit guidance is species-specific. Avoid it for Mediterranean and leopard tortoises under the cited RVC care sheets. Some tropical tortoises may include fruit, but only within a diet designed for that species.

Spinach

The Tortoise Table advises against spinach because oxalic acid can bind calcium. Do not assume that a dark green leaf is safe simply because it is nutritious for people.

Unknown plants

“Natural” does not mean safe. If you cannot identify a plant and confirm its suitability, do not feed it. A single mistaken identification can expose a tortoise to toxins or an inappropriate nutrient profile.

Supermarket greens

VCA lists dark leafy greens and says commercial tortoise food may be used alongside them. The RVC discusses supplementation particularly when supermarket foods are used. Treat these products as managed components of a species-appropriate plan, not as a universal replacement for weeds, grasses or hay.

Commercial diets

Commercial food can be useful when selected and used under veterinary guidance, but a label that says “for tortoises” does not establish that it suits every species. Check the ingredients, feeding directions and intended species, and keep the natural staple appropriate to your tortoise.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Calcium, UVB and metabolic bone disease

Food alone cannot correct inadequate lighting. UVB from sunlight or suitable artificial lighting enables a tortoise to absorb and use dietary calcium. VCA associates metabolic bone disease with calcium-phosphorus imbalance, insufficient UV exposure, improper diet or combinations of these problems.

Check the whole system

  • Confirm that the lamp actually produces UVB, is within the manufacturer’s recommended distance and is replaced according to its service life.
  • Provide the species-appropriate basking and ambient temperatures recommended by a reptile veterinarian or established care sheet.
  • Keep the UVB path unobstructed by ordinary glass or plastic, which can block useful UVB.
  • Make calcium available in the form and frequency recommended for the species, age and diet.
  • Record supplement use so that calcium and vitamins are not accidentally doubled through multiple products.

The RVC Mediterranean guidance recommends alternating food dusting with calcium and a combined vitamin-and-mineral supplement, particularly when supermarket foods are used. That is not a universal dose for every tortoise. Formulation, frequency and the need for additional vitamins depend on species, diet, growing conditions, UVB and individual health, so have a reptile veterinarian tailor the plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warning signs that need veterinary attention

Arrange prompt veterinary care for a soft or deforming shell, swollen or weak limbs, tremors, difficulty walking, repeated refusal of food, severe lethargy or a tortoise that cannot use its jaw normally. Do not respond by simply adding more powder; the cause may involve lighting, temperature, disease or an incorrect calcium-phosphorus balance.

Water and hydration

Fresh water should always be available. In its Mediterranean tortoise guidance, the RVC recommends a container that allows the tortoise to submerge and says to change the water daily. Use a stable, shallow-sided dish that the animal can enter and leave safely, and clean it whenever it is fouled.

Water does not replace correct humidity, soaking advice or enclosure design for the species. If a tortoise drinks excessively, becomes unusually wet, stops urinating or shows signs of dehydration, consult a reptile veterinarian rather than trying to correct the problem with food alone.

An illustrative menu-planning method

Use this as a way to organize shopping and observation, not as a gram-by-gram prescription.

For a Mediterranean tortoise

  • Choose a base of several verified weeds, such as dandelion, plantain, chickweed and sow thistle.
  • Add suitable flowers or leaves named by the RVC, such as sedum, hibiscus, nasturtium or honeysuckle, when available and correctly identified.
  • Use a vegetable-and-salad mixture only when suitable weeds are unavailable, and review supplementation with a veterinarian.
  • Exclude fruit and spinach under the cited guidance.

For a Sulcata or leopard tortoise

  • Make clean grasses and hay the dependable foundation.
  • Add verified weeds and other suitable vegetation without allowing them to replace the grazing base.
  • Do not use fruit as a routine food; the RVC specifically advises against it for leopard tortoises.

For a tropical tortoise

  • Begin with the species’ recognized plant staples.
  • Use fruit or animal protein only if the species-specific plan calls for them.
  • Ask a reptile veterinarian to check that the proposed menu matches the animal’s age, locality, UVB and enclosure.

When to call a reptile veterinarian

Professional advice is especially important when the species is uncertain, the tortoise is newly acquired, the animal is young or growing rapidly, appetite has changed, the shell is abnormal, or the current diet has been mostly supermarket food or commercial pellets. Bring a food list, supplement containers, photographs of the enclosure and UVB lamp details. A veterinarian can assess body condition, feces, shell growth and calcium status instead of guessing from a food chart.

The central rule is simple but not simplistic: feed the species you actually have. Mediterranean tortoises need a varied weed-and-broadleaf menu, Sulcata and leopard tortoises need a grass-and-hay base, and tropical species require their own guidance. Safe plant identification, uncontaminated food, appropriate calcium, effective UVB and clean water work together; none can reliably compensate for the others.
