How to Keep Snakes Away From a Dock or Shoreline Without Harming Them

There is no guaranteed snake-proof shoreline. Learn how to reduce encounters around a dock by removing loose shelter, repairing gaps, preserving vegetation, and giving snakes a safe way to leave.

You cannot guarantee that snakes will stay away from a waterfront, and clearing the shoreline can damage the habitat that protects the bank. The humane strategy is to keep the dock and other high-use areas free of loose shelter, repair access gaps, preserve water-edge plants, and give any snake a clear route to leave. If it must be moved, use distance and a long tool only when the species and situation are safe to manage; otherwise, call local wildlife professionals.

Why snakes come to docks and shorelines

A dock sits where several snake needs overlap: water, prey, warm surfaces for basking, and places to hide. Clemson Cooperative Extension lists fish, frogs, bird nests, small mammals, and insects among the food resources available to aquatic snakes. A snake near the water is therefore not necessarily responding to a dirty dock or a failed deterrent; the shoreline itself can be suitable habitat.

That ecological reality changes the goal. The practical aim is not to remove every snake from an entire bank. It is to reduce avoidable encounters in the places people, children, and pets use most while leaving the functioning shoreline intact. Attempts to strip vegetation or poison wildlife can create erosion, water-quality, safety, and legal problems that are worse than the original sighting.

Set priorities before you act

Separate an immediate encounter from a long-term prevention problem. A snake already on a dock needs space and an exit route. Repeated sightings call for a review of clutter, structural gaps, and how people use the area. Trying to solve both problems at once often leads to chasing an animal or disturbing habitat unnecessarily.

  1. Make the area safe. Pause swimming, move children and pets away, and ask people to stay off the dock until the snake has a clear route away.
  2. Observe from a distance. Note where the animal is without approaching for a close photograph or attempting identification by touch.
  3. Open the easiest exit. Move people and movable objects away from the route to the water, shoreline cover, or another open area. Do not rearrange objects close to the snake.
  4. Wait first. Many encounters end when the animal is no longer crowded. A person who cannot remain at a safe distance should leave the area and request help.
  5. Use a long tool only when appropriate. If the snake is clearly outdoors, the handler is on stable footing, and distance can be maintained, gentle guidance with a broom or pool-net pole may be reasonable. Stop immediately if the snake reacts defensively or the route is blocked.
  6. Afterward, correct the attractant you can control. Store loose gear and repair an empty, accessible gap. Do not use the sighting as a reason to clear the bank.

What to do when a snake is on the dock

Start with distance, not identification or pursuit. A snake that has room to leave will often do so without intervention.

  1. Stop people and pets from approaching. Move children and dogs away from the dock edge and keep everyone behind a safe visual distance. Do not step over, corner, or reach toward the snake.
  2. Leave an escape route. Keep the path to the water, shoreline cover, or another open area unobstructed. Do not surround the snake with people, chairs, nets, or boats.
  3. Wait when you can. Ohio Department of Natural Resources guidance says that simply walking back and forth near snakes on a crib dock is usually enough to make them flee. The safer interpretation is to make your presence known from a distance and then give the animal room, rather than chasing it.
  4. Use a long tool only if you can stay well away. Michigan Department of Natural Resources advises that an outdoor snake may be gently encouraged to move with a long tool such as a broom. A long-handled pool skimmer or pool-net pole can provide similar reach. Nudge the ground or space behind the snake toward an existing exit; do not strike, pin, hook, or drag the animal.
  5. Stop if the situation is uncertain. If the snake is large and dark, cannot be approached without closing the distance, is trapped in a confined space, or may be venomous, back away and contact a local wildlife agency or qualified wildlife professional.

Never handle an unidentified snake, even if it appears sluggish or nonvenomous. Water snakes can be confused with cottonmouths, and UF/IFAS notes that even nonvenomous water snakes may bite when threatened. A clear photograph is not worth moving close enough to create a bite risk.

Make the dock less useful as temporary shelter

Remove loose gear after use

Chairs, overturned boats, rafts, life jackets, covers, towels, and beach furniture can create cool, shaded spaces beside or on a dock. Pick up and store this equipment when it is not in use, especially when it is left close to the water. The objective is not to sterilize the shoreline; it is to remove artificial hiding places from the human-use surface.

Keep the actual walking surface clear enough that people can see where they are stepping. A tidy deck also makes it easier to notice a snake before anyone comes within touching distance. Do not use the absence of gear as a reason to disturb vegetation under or beside the dock.

Close access gaps under structures

Inspect the underside of the dock, stairs, storage boxes, retaining structures, and nearby sheds for holes or openings that lead into sheltered spaces. Repair gaps once the area is empty. Do not reach into a dark opening to check whether a snake is inside; use a visual inspection from a distance and obtain professional help if access cannot be checked safely.

Repairs reduce places where snakes can linger directly under a high-use structure, but they will not exclude snakes from the wider shoreline. A dock is exposed to natural habitat on every side, so a repair should be viewed as targeted maintenance rather than a promise of permanent prevention.

Concentrate effort where people actually gather

Ohio DNR notes that protecting a smaller, frequently used area can be more practical than trying to exclude snakes from an entire beach or shoreline. Define the zone that people use most—such as the top of the dock, a ladder, or a swimming entry—and keep that zone free of loose shelter and structural gaps. Leave less-used natural areas available as escape habitat.

At some properties, a brush pile placed well away from a swimming area may concentrate shelter use away from the busiest space. Ohio presents this as a site-specific option, not a universal prescription. A brush pile should never block an animal’s route, create a hazard for people, or substitute for professional advice where protected species are involved.

Protect the shoreline instead of clearing it

Why removing plants can backfire

Clemson Extension advises protecting water-edge plants because they help prevent erosion and limit pollution entering a pond. UF/IFAS likewise advises against mowing all the way to the edge of a lake or pond; doing so damages habitat used by frogs, turtles, and birds. Removing that cover may make a bank look more open while weakening the shoreline and eliminating habitat for species that help the aquatic system function.

Keep the dock surface and access route orderly, but do not strip the bank to create a bare perimeter. The presence of natural plants is not evidence that a snake is dangerous, and destroying them does not create a guaranteed snake-free waterfront.

Use a mowed-landscape buffer only as a local option

Ohio DNR describes a 1–3 foot buffer between the shore and a mowed lawn as one regional way to reduce encounters and mower injuries. Treat that range as an Ohio guide’s suggestion, not a proven universal standard. Soil, slope, flood conditions, plant communities, and local rules differ, so the appropriate buffer for another location may be different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where a lawn meets the water, a visible transition can help people recognize that the bank is natural habitat rather than an extension of the yard. Keep any access path intentional and stable, and ask the state or provincial wildlife agency about local shoreline-management requirements before changing vegetation.

Repellents and fencing: limits of the common fixes

Commercial snake repellents are not a dependable answer. Clemson Extension reports inconsistent results from labeled repellents and explains that temperature, time of day, the time since application, humidity, and precipitation can all affect these compounds. It specifically does not recommend mothballs as a snake deterrent. Do not scatter mothballs or other chemicals around a dock where children, pets, fish, and wildlife can contact them.

Fencing can exclude snakes from a limited land area in some circumstances, but UF/IFAS describes snake fencing as costly, time-consuming, and a last resort for yards. An open dock or shoreline is a particularly difficult place to fence: water, changing levels, vegetation, and multiple escape routes complicate installation and maintenance. A barrier beside a wetland must direct snakes back toward natural habitat rather than trap them in a yard or against the water’s edge. Incorrectly installed fencing can also create a false sense of security and require continual inspection.

Approach Best use Important limitation
Remove loose gear Reducing artificial shelter on docks and around high-use areas Does not remove natural shoreline habitat or guarantee that snakes will not visit
Repair holes under structures Closing specific access points beneath docks, stairs, or nearby structures Requires safe inspection and ongoing maintenance
Wait or gently guide a present snake Handling an immediate encounter when a person can keep a safe distance Provides immediate relief only; it is not long-term exclusion
Repellent products Products marketed for snake avoidance Clemson reports inconsistent results; mothballs are not recommended
Fencing Potentially limiting access to a small, defined yard area UF/IFAS calls it costly and time-consuming and recommends it only as a last resort

How to respond when the species is unknown

Color, pattern, swimming behavior, and a quick glimpse are unreliable ways to identify a snake. UF/IFAS warns that water snakes may resemble cottonmouths and recommends leaving an unidentified large, dark snake alone. Treat an uncertain identification as a safety issue, not a challenge to solve at close range.

  • Keep people and pets away until the snake has left or professional help arrives.
  • Do not grab, pin, trap, or carry the snake to another part of the property.
  • Do not assume that a nonvenomous species is safe to handle; a threatened snake can still bite.
  • Ask the local wildlife agency or a qualified local wildlife professional about species identification, protected-status rules, and humane removal options.

Species protections and relocation rules vary by location. Guidance written for Florida, Michigan, Ohio, or the Lake Erie islands should not be treated as a nationwide legal rule. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 1999 rule for Lake Erie water snakes describes non-harmful actions that encourage those snakes to leave or stay off residences, dock decks, paths, and water equipment, but that document is specific to that protected population and does not establish permission to handle every snake elsewhere.

Apply the plan to common shoreline situations

A snake sunning itself on the top of an open dock

Keep the dock clear of people and dogs, leave the nearest exit open, and wait from a distance. If normal activity at a safe distance does not prompt departure and the snake is clearly outdoors, a long broom or pool-net pole can be used to gently encourage movement without touching it. If you cannot maintain that distance, stop and call for help.

A snake under the dock

Do not kneel at the edge, reach between boards, or probe beneath the structure. Keep the area unused until the animal leaves or a professional assesses it. Once the space is empty, repair holes that provide access to sheltered cavities and remove stored items that create additional cover.

A snake near a swimming ladder or entry point

Pause swimming and move everyone away from the entry point. Preserve a route toward open water or shoreline cover rather than blocking the snake with floatation equipment. A long-handled pole may be appropriate only for someone who can work from a stable position and keep well away; an unidentified or agitated snake calls for professional assistance instead.

Repeated sightings along a lawn edge

Audit the equipment and structures in the high-use area before changing the bank. Store rafts and furniture, check for gaps, and avoid mowing or clearing the water’s edge. An Ohio-style 1–3 foot transition between lawn and shore may be considered where local conditions support it, but consult local authorities before altering established vegetation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Build a low-impact routine

Before using the dock, look over the walking surface and the immediate access area from a distance. Store loose equipment after use rather than leaving it overturned beside the water. When maintenance is needed, address one structural gap or cluttered spot at a time instead of clearing the entire bank. Keep the shoreline plants that stabilize the soil, and maintain only the access route people actually need.

These habits reduce surprise encounters without turning the waterfront into a chemical or physical exclusion zone. They also preserve places where snakes and other wildlife can move away from people on their own.

Match the response to the type of problem

Situation First choice Why
One snake passing across an open dock Clear people away and wait It addresses the immediate encounter without pursuing the animal.
Snake lingering under a dock or stair Keep the area closed, then repair the empty gap Reaching into a cavity creates more risk than the shelter itself.
Frequent sightings beside a swimming area Remove nearby loose gear and focus maintenance on that small zone Ohio guidance favors protecting heavily used areas rather than excluding an entire shoreline.
Unknown or possibly venomous snake Back away and call qualified local help Water snakes and cottonmouths can be confused, and handling can cause a bite.
Desire for a permanent barrier Discuss site-specific fencing with a local professional Fencing is costly and time-consuming, difficult beside water, and a last resort.

Common mistakes that make encounters worse

  • Clearing the whole bank: Removing plants can increase erosion and pollution and damages habitat for frogs, turtles, and birds.
  • Chasing the snake into cover: A retreating animal can become harder to observe and easier to corner accidentally.
  • Using a short tool: A stick or hand-held object encourages a person to close the distance. If a long tool cannot be used while standing safely back, do not attempt the move.
  • Relying on a product label: Clemson reports variable repellent performance under changing temperature, humidity, precipitation, time of day, and application timing.
  • Assuming another state’s rule applies: Protected status, removal authority, and relocation rules are local. A Lake Erie water-snake rule is not a general license to move snakes elsewhere.

When professional help is the humane choice

Contact the local wildlife agency or a qualified wildlife professional when the species is uncertain, the snake may be venomous, the animal is trapped, the location is heavily used, or you cannot maintain a safe distance. Tell the professional where the snake is, whether people or pets are nearby, and whether the animal appears confined. Follow local instructions about protected species and removal; do not relocate a snake yourself based on advice from another state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A humane response is successful when people remain safe, the snake is not injured, and the shoreline continues to function. For most properties, that means a tidy dock, repaired gaps, intact water-edge vegetation, and patience when a snake is simply passing through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a dock completely snake-proof?

No. A shoreline supplies water, prey, basking surfaces, and natural cover, so permanent exclusion is not guaranteed. Reduce avoidable encounters by storing loose gear, repairing specific gaps, and concentrating maintenance on the areas people use most.

Should I remove plants along the water’s edge?

No. Clemson Extension says water-edge plants help limit erosion and pollution, and UF/IFAS warns that mowing to the edge damages habitat. Keep an intentional access route, but preserve the functioning shoreline.

What should I do if a snake is on my dock right now?

Move children and pets away, leave an unobstructed escape route, and wait from a safe distance. If the outdoor snake can be approached without closing that distance, a long broom or pool-net pole may gently encourage it toward an exit. Do not strike, grab, corner, or trap it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are mothballs or commercial snake repellents effective?

They are not dependable. Clemson Extension reports inconsistent repellent results and specifically does not recommend mothballs as a snake deterrent. Chemicals can also expose people, pets, fish, and wildlife.

How can I tell whether a waterside snake is a cottonmouth?

Do not attempt close identification. UF/IFAS notes that water snakes may resemble cottonmouths and that even nonvenomous snakes may bite when threatened. Keep away and contact local wildlife professionals when identification or a safe response is uncertain.

Will a fence solve a shoreline snake problem?

Fencing may limit access to a small land area, but UF/IFAS describes it as costly, time-consuming, and a last resort. Water, changing levels, vegetation, and maintenance make fencing especially difficult around an open dock.

Can I move a snake to another part of my property?

Do not relocate it yourself. Species protections and relocation rules vary by jurisdiction, and moving an unidentified snake requires handling. Ask your state or provincial wildlife agency or a qualified local professional for lawful options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a long-handled pool skimmer a snake repellent?

No. It is only a reach tool that may help a person gently nudge an outdoor snake toward an existing exit while maintaining distance. It does not prevent future visits, and professional help is safer when the species or situation is uncertain.

The Bottom Line

There is no guaranteed snake-free shoreline. Store loose dock gear, repair accessible gaps, keep children and pets back, preserve water-edge vegetation, and let a snake leave whenever possible. Use a long tool only from a safe distance and only when the situation is clearly manageable; otherwise, contact local wildlife professionals.
